I'm having this weird-ass problem. Just now, I can no longer preview sounds played, it just gives me an error that reads, "Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\(insert sound name).wav. Your sound card may be in use." I cannot access the Sound Toolbar icon on the lower right corner of the screen cause it won't show up.

The computer will generate said sounds as normal, and I have checked EVERYTHING. I tried going to the Control Panel, accessing teh SOunds, Speech, and Audio Devices. It says there's no Audio Device but I can hear sounds, but not when I'm online speaking to my friends. Everything is in working order, but I can't hear shit when online or when I talk to friends in IMs I cannot hear the IM pings. Anything that I can do to solve this problems cause I'm on my wits end on this problem...

Has anything on your computer changed recently, such as newly installed hardware/software? Have you recently deleted anything? Have you run any virus scans? What do you mean by previewing sounds? What version of Windows are you using? What is your sound card/chipset?

What you could try is reinstalling your sound drivers, if you haven't already; but I'd think the most likely problem is something you recently installed or a virus.

This happened with my really crappy sound drivers for my motherboard's built-in sound system; the driver would crash, but it'd still be playing system sounds. Just rebooting would fix it though. I eventually got a nice PCI card whose drivers actually work.

Of course check for driver and BIOS updates too.

I've done that too Double H. Still had no clue what the hell was wrong wiht it...
but I have the problem solves thanks to Zero after I gave him a long-distance call.

There was a type of EXT file that suddenly turne dmissing after I deleted off the Grand Theft Auto III PC game... when I uninstalled the PC game, that somehow went wiht it. And after making a complete backup of my files, Zero connected to my PC, took control from his end all teh way in Idaho where he and my other friends live, and fixed the problem.

He did a System Restore back to Sept. 25, on the 26th I uninstalled it, so he SR'd back to the 25th. Of course Zero-kun foudn a semi-important update for one of my BIOS and updated it.

Even thought everything works now and I have updated the "old files" with my back-up, my McAfee Virus Scan is missing some .jar files. Of course that problem I'm taking care of myself.

I suggest dumping McAfee and getting an AV that doesn't suck.

I've also heard instances of where the sound system would screw up because the onboard audio wasn't turned off. I had to explain this to one of my clients.
