I'm working on a few projects, and to complete some of them, I'm hoping to learn more about how the menus work. Not sure if anyone's looked into it, I couldn't find anything on the forums. Does anyone know how to add menu items? The most important is when you choose your save file. I've added two more game save file's support, but you can't really use it without the menu. I can still test it using a save slot select tile but menus is something that could come in handy for any decent hack. If we could figure it out, at least the basics, this could eventually lead to option screens or even a pause menu. Anybody have any ideas for me? If someone will point me in the right direction, it would greatly help.

I'm pretty sure they're hardcoded, each menu being made just as a menu was needed. You could check the one-player and two-player only patches here to see what Alaric and Smallhacker did. Also, you could search for the text that is loaded as the menu and use a debugger to tell you where in the ROM the menu tile loading function is.

I've found the menu tile loading when I did another hack; I can get the options to show up; I just can't figure out how to move the arrow or set a flag when an option is selected. But I'll keep digging and keep you posted. Oh, and yes, it's hardcoded. But so was the savegame subroutine. That doesn't seem to stop me

The one and two player patches wouldn't help, anyways. I'm pretty sure all they do is just branch/jump past the character select menu.

Of course, if you found said branch, you'd find said menu, which could at least point you in the right direction.
