...but I want to get the public opinion on it first. I was thinking on 4 things...

1: Make it semi-straight with many odd items that may be out-of-place, but not ordinary.
2: Base it as going in a fort and conquering it
3: A game for rookies to get better in
4: Just plain odd...overworld says it's water, but you enter and find sky and lava...
5: You hate my guts.

I'm open to other ideas as well...but no ASM-type suggestions, as I am only 15.

I am 13, I know a semi-decent amount of ASM.

Anyways, none of those ideas seem any good to me. You should just make themed levels, like a few grass levels, to be collaborated into a grass world, like a standard hack.

1 seems like a Phinsfan hack but better
2 seems a lot like The Castle
3 seems like... too easy
4 is pointless and annoying.
5 I can't really vote for.

Wait, what exactly are we going for? A storyline or something?

you should mix all the ideas, so make an introductory level, asomething related to castles (I've never seen a castle world done before ^^, you could do it a big castle, and each level would be parts of the castle) and well, maybe a random-wtf-crazy secret world?

Actually, I haven't made a hack yet, and was planning on one of these for a firstie, unless I was given a better idea.

Ok, so I only been here 3 months. Does that tell you about my IQ of ASM?

NOTE: This post was made before Shiryu posted.

What is a first hack, anyway? Usually shabby. And the fort will take some time to figure out, I'm no good at any kind of art.
And since there's no tiles for a large-scale castle of any kind, that will take some time, so I might be knocked out of that one.

As a side note, I won't start working until I get at least 12 total voters and a difference of 2 between 1st and 2nd.. I'll experiment with objects, but not work on the hack, not yet, until I see some results.

Only if you want it to suck.

Not only does your Tutorial idea sound boring as hell, but it's your first hack as you said, so you're most likely not really experienced enough to explain others how to hack.

Way to think outside the box, X. Yeah, make sure it's good, and really, the rest doesn't matter.

Barring that, definitely go with the first option. I think I know what you're getting at (themed stages). But for the love of god, MAKE SURE YOU HANDLE IT WELL. Having a grass stage with an iceberg in the middle of it isn't good. I suggest looking to the DKC games for inspiration on level gimmicks. They can be as trivial as going to the left, as complex as a full-blown ASM hack, or as simple as using a versatile enemy often. And try not to repeat level gimmicks.

The good part about that choice is that it keeps the hack interesting. To me, that's almost as important as the level design - hacks that throw one level after another at you with similar elements between every level are boring. Even the original SMW kept itself interesting.

I wish I was being sarcastic with that post, but too many hacks fail to be, you know. Good.

It's kind of depressing.

OK! Let's see how we're doing...

2 people (probably in the last 4) wanted to see gimmicks. If I were plenty good, I'd have some odd things...water you float on, maybe?

4 people, currently the most, want to invade a fort. It could be a nice open area hooked to hallways, dungeons, even the dining room!

No one wants tutorials. Tutorials are racist. I will not be racist.

3 people like wierd things. Ever played ChaosCompleteXX? Wierd enough.

And XKeeper hates my guts. I think that from another thread. He did post after I saw the vote, after all.

If people want the type of castle / fort I just mentioned, I'll have to learn "Basic ExGfx Insertion", which will cost 9 Skill Points. Umm...I need to stop the Game & Chat format...

Whether he does or not, he clearly didn't show it in this very poll.

And tutorials, racist ? I won't even try to understand.

*ahem* Sorry about that. It's from past reference. And I was pressured on the post since I was about to get kicked off the comp. So I didn't have much time to make a proper post. But the punchline is "Fort good, tutorial bad".
Apologies if I caused you to break something.
