I think it would be fine to make it approval-only, but it still has to be newb friendly. I suggest we just make a special newbie forum where people can ask all their dumb questions. An advanced ROM hacking forum would also be a good idea, or one for questions regarding editors, etc. Just split it up more, and make all the more advanced forums approve-only. That would be the best way to do it. This is truly the best site I know of for ROM hacking discussion, and I never would have gotten into it if I couldn't post. And I'm guilty of asking some dumb questions too, but I do learn from them, and quickly, and if there were a special section for newbs, I would have asked them all there. Also, I'm focusing my efforts on one particular at the moment, but when I switch to a different game I may have some new dumb questions, and it would be nice to have a place to ask them without annoying any members that are dealing with more advanced stuff. So basically, more topics! Why not?

Hasn't anyone else noticed that ~95% of the stupid is concentrated in the Mario 64 threads?

Exactly. most of us want to discuss somthing intresting like other peoples hacks, and all of a sudden you get all these stupid questions from newbs who came here only because the found this site randomly through a google search.

Moments after I post i find this.

I'm happy that he at least found the rom and extended it on his own but his ideas have already been deemed currently impossible.

i say yes. There is too much about editors or hacks or nonsense. about 50% of threads(and posts) are good, and most of them are like 1 sentence to raise post count.

Is there something wrong with hacks or editors in a rom hacking forum? I can understand nonsense but...

I voted "meh", and I suppose as such my comment doesn't count, but I'd just like to add that the Super Mario World forum has been on approve-only for a few months now, and while it HAS cut down on the number of stupid "how do I/can someone do?" threads, it has under no circumstances cut down the amount of crappy hacks that are getting posted there.

Whatsoever.

Just... just throwing that out there.

Well, it's not supposed to cut off people posting hacks just the stupid posts.

And it's kinda stupid if we ban someone becuse of a bad hack.

It does sound like a good idea. It doe sound rather exclusive, but since quality is what we are after, then there does need to be some sort sorting out of all the junk.

My only concern is that the means to be approved would be strict enough that only people with projects could be approved. I am unsure how things work in pokemon or SMW, but there does need to be a mix of newcommers asking valid questions, and vetan members doing their thing.

Well, the SMW and Pokemon approval system already in effect suggests projects but they're not absolutely necessary. I think sometimes approval is more of an excuse to check for decent spelling and grammar than anything else.

No, If you at least have a brain and a background with some rom hacking, you should get in.

Well the decent spelling and grammer are what bug me since not everybody who likes to hack roms are grammer students. But I guess as long as the person can be understood without needing a magical stone in a hat of some sort, then things are okay.

What about automatic approval for well known hackers in the community? Don't you think it might be a tad insulting to have somebody like Gamemaker24 or others have to be approved? I would think anybody with an editor or really famous hack to their name wouldn't need to explain themselves in one paragraph, but thats's my own two cents.

By "spelling and grammar" they mean you have to have at least as good a grasp of the english language as the average preschool student.

I believe BMF once said something along the lines of "I'd rather let a few idiots slip by and revoke their approval later than block them all and lose someone who has genuine talent but isn't the world's best typist"

If they don't post in approval, how are we supposed to tell that they even want to post in hacking? Worse, if it's a new user with a name matching a popular member, how do you even know it's really that member and not some stupid spammer? Somehow a paragraph of "hi, you may know me since I made this" doesn't sound terribly degrading, either.

Hell, it's an ego boost when someone says "Well, of course we're going to approve you."

Trust me, BMF will make sure there will be no ego boosts. And if they do make a stupid "I made this hack thread SIKE!" thread they would know.

I was referring to Jigglysaint's post about experienced hackers not needing approval. Even for those who are more than qualified, with popular editors out, how is one to tell that the person is who they say they are unless they post?

They will be revealed for who they are once everybody starts asking questions about the game they made an editor for.

But I suppose that's true that it would be too much of an ego boost. People hack games for fun, not solely for recognition.

I guess even Jesus needed to be baptized.

Rom hackers to Jesus is quite a comparison.

Also, I didn't mean that automatic approval for known successes would be an ego boost, though it would. What I meant was that you seemed to think it was somehow wrong to force experienced hackers to ask for approval, like it was an insult. I was pointing out that in the approval threads for experienced hackers, it's really more of a complimentary thread like that one I posted above.

Err, I should have checked that link. It's fixed now.

I guess you are right with that. I do like the idea of the forum, and I suppose it really isn't that much of a bother for oldbies to ask for approval. On a lighter note, this is what I hope the forum will Not have in it(the following is an e-mail corrospondance from my girlfriend):

HinTom I Cant wait to see you on Thursday Meline And Aidan Hare On Thursay
october 19 You Satle cant came I Sake That are going home Tuesday or wensday
I Sake it Going bee Wedsday I Cant Wati to see you
Take to you soon I Am email you at 400pm
Love Katie See you at 300pm On This Thursday

Since I can read that, I guess reading posts made by the typing deficient really doesn't bother me that much.
