Keep in mind, my handle on msn was "FLAC: You can have a total of five songs, but MAN don't they sound good?"

[17:37:33] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: i dont get your name
[17:37:44] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: the you can have a totaly of five songs, but MAN they sound good
[17:38:19] nebetsu@gmail.com: FLAC is a format of audio thing
[17:38:27] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: mhmm
[17:38:32] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: but i dont get it
[17:38:41] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: your only aloud 5 in the whole world?
[17:38:45] nebetsu@gmail.com: ...
[17:38:46] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: and dont all sounds sound the same?
[17:38:48] nebetsu@gmail.com: It's a joke
[17:38:55] nebetsu@gmail.com: FLAC is a lossless audio compression
[17:39:08] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: whats lossless audio compression?
[17:39:23] nebetsu@gmail.com: MP3's get smaller by taking away sound that we are theoretically unable to hear. Even though some people can hear it.
[17:39:31] nebetsu@gmail.com: That's how they can be so small
[17:39:45] nebetsu@gmail.com: FLAC is compressed in a different way and KEEPS the sound. All of it
[17:39:50] nebetsu@gmail.com: Even the stuff we can't hear
[17:39:57] nebetsu@gmail.com: The result is a MUCH clearer sound.
[17:40:07] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh icc..thats weird..but why can you only have 5?
[17:40:20] nebetsu@gmail.com: The problem is that they're about 5 to 10 times the size of a normal mp3
[17:40:42] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: :|
[17:40:46] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: thats alot right lol?
[17:40:52] nebetsu@gmail.com: yeah if you don't have much space
[17:40:53] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: actually yeah that is alot
[17:40:59] nebetsu@gmail.com: if you have space for it, it's great
[17:41:35] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh lol..does it only work for like certain computers
[17:43:06] nebetsu@gmail.com: Winamp can read FLAC files
[17:43:40] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: Ohh..what's Winamp..and so you just donwload the sounds and instead of saying mp3..it says FLACE
[17:43:43] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: FLAC**
[17:43:49] nebetsu@gmail.com: yeah
[17:43:59] nebetsu@gmail.com: it's like (song title).flac
[17:44:06] nebetsu@gmail.com: What do you use for playing MP3s?
[17:44:18] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: umm a cd player
[17:44:24] nebetsu@gmail.com: like.. on your computer
[17:44:31] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh umm itunes?
[17:45:03] nebetsu@gmail.com: ow!
[17:45:06] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: what?
[17:45:13] nebetsu@gmail.com: itunes is a bloated piece of crap
[17:45:20] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: NO ITS NOT I LIKE MY LITTLE ITUNES
[17:45:23] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: your so mean[17:46:04] nebetsu@gmail.com: I'm serious: itunes is bloatware in it's finest. A media player should NOT strain a computer that much. The only one worse than that is Sony's SonicStage
[17:46:31] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: media players bad?
[17:46:44] nebetsu@gmail.com: itunes is a media player
[17:46:49] nebetsu@gmail.com: like Windows Media Player
[17:46:56] nebetsu@gmail.com: and Winamp
[17:47:06] nebetsu@gmail.com: are you on windows or a mac?
[17:47:09] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh you confuse me
[17:47:11] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: Windows?
[17:47:17] nebetsu@gmail.com: you know:
[17:47:25] nebetsu@gmail.com: Windows 98, 95, XP, whatever
[17:48:06] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: xp
[17:48:09] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh wait what
[17:48:10] nebetsu@gmail.com: ok
[17:48:14] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: i have windows xp
[17:48:15] nebetsu@gmail.com: ok
[17:49:14] nebetsu@gmail.com: http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp524_full_emusic-7plus.exe <-- Winamp. It's better than itunes
[17:49:58] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: okie lol
[17:50:15] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: so i have to put all my muzik to that?
[17:50:37] nebetsu@gmail.com: yeah
[17:50:43] nebetsu@gmail.com: it's quite a bit lighter than itunes
[17:50:57] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh okie so what do i do it says select a type of install
[17:51:39] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ?
[17:51:51] nebetsu@gmail.com: You don't know how to install a program?
[17:52:05] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: YEAH BUT theres a whole buncha things usually i just press next next next
[17:52:15] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: i dono if im suppose to put
[17:52:34] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: full..standard..lite..minimal..or custum
[17:52:40] nebetsu@gmail.com: just go full

[17:54:09] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: whats a reboot?
[17:54:35] nebetsu@gmail.com: That's when your computer restarts.
[17:54:42] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: ohh okie LOL
[17:55:13] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: its really weird looking
[17:55:18] latina_girl_0191@hotmail.com: how do i add my muzik to it?

Come on! Even casual users know what a reboot is!

When I read the title of this thread, I was hoping this was going to be about injuries obtained from computer cases.

I'm disappointed.

It's funny 'cuz it's true. I ripped a CD of mine to FLAC and it came out as 300MB.

You probably should have mentioned to this person that they should be wary of what they select. If you read the EULA it mentions popups and other junk if you install the EMusic crap, and I don't know what "Active Security Monitor" is but it certainly sounds fishy. (I never thought I'd say this, but anyone know a better player than Winamp? I'm worried it's slowly turning into a spyware-infested pile of dung. )

I know someone like this.... you send him a Vorbis file, and he gets confused as hell. Every single time. Same with AVI and stuff. Oh and he has no concept of reading wtf he's installing (there's one problem most average-joes have with Windows: They don't pay attention to what they're installing with a program)

I prefer the CLI, because it makes more sense to me. So mpg321, flac123, ogg123, waveplay, mplayer, whatever else is appropriate (if in doubt, mplayer plays almost everything video and audio).

Well, she doesn't know alot of basic things about computers, but she's asking questions and making an attempt to understand the answers. I think that puts her miles ahead of most of the computer illiterate people I deal with.

I'm going to have to concur with that one. After my day I wanted to slap somebody. Namely the person who got angry at me because they didn't save their file and it got... killed by the power outage in their area...

At least she's trying.

My favourite version of Winamp will always be 2.95. There's no spyware in that one and it's fast and can run on pretty much anything.

Yeah, I might just go back to that. I'd rather have something that can work on Linux too though (without faking a Windows environment). Command lines are good, but not for media players... just makes more sense to me to have a GUI for those.

XMMS looks like the old winamp style and can even use Winamp Classic skins.

Otherwise, in Linux, I use AmaroK.
