| I'm thinking about this now. I've got a problem, see, with greeting people I don't know at all, and even some people I do know, in the hallways and in the streets. Since this is the Navy, and a Navy base, everyone (at least guys... strange, I feel there's no obligation to say hello to a woman) greets everyone, sort of, in the same rank. It's just like my old college, in this way.
But I hate saying hello! I'd rather just ignore people. I'd rather make that small, sort of sober eye contact people make at a normal distance before passing each other and that's it. Maybe a smile. Smiles are fine. But they want a hello! A greeting! A rhetorical 'hey, what's up?' I don't want to say that. It feels like the energy I'm using to say that takes too much time away from my own thoughts, and I feel corny, like I am just following a vauge but expected social quirk that people find you rude for not performing. Meanwhile, now, I think I have sort of a solution, to maybe open myself up to greeting people. I've got to be more original, is it. But I can't think of much. You guys seem like an eccentric crew. Maybe you can help? What do you say, or suggest to say, to a person passing who you do not know, and are only filling 'awkard space' with? |

| Just say "Good day" and keep on moving, damnit. Not that big of a deal is it? You don't have to say "Hello" or use a real greeting, just say "Good day" and keep walking if you don't know them and don't feel like talking to them, that should work well enough and shouldn't distract you from your thoughts much.. If you actually know the person who greets though, chances are they actually want to talk, in which case you should probably, you know, say Hello back in that case.. or something.
Eh, it shouldn't be such a big deal anyway.. |

| When walking in places of people I may or may not know (such as the workplace or the community college), I only interact with others if I make eye contact with them. At which point, I usually just nod my head.
If they say something like "Hello" or "Hey there," I just respond with a blunt "Hello." If they ask a question, I answer with one syllable. "How's it going?" "Good." Though the ever-present "What's up?" doesn't have a good answer, so I tend to respond with "Hey." No need to interact with others any more than necessary, I'd say. (-: |

Meh -- I walk a lot; and I inevitably walk past strangers heading the other direction when I do. Most of the time, nobody says anything to anyone, but sometimes I get the impression it would be kinda rude -- so I usually just mumble "'Evening" at them as I go past. And smile... and nod... 
But most the time I just wish I was kinda invisible or something. |

Well, if I know the person then it's a lot easier than something totally random. :\ Kinda like people greeting you in stores... just suck it up and move on.  |

all I give most people is a head-nod, or a quick wave, unless I want a conversation, once they realise thats your way of greeting, they won't care that you don't give a proper "hello" back to them. In these parts a head-nod is generally accepted as "sup" anyways, though. I don't see it as much of a big deal, though.

| Whenever I'm walk past strangers and they say like "hi" or something, I either:
a) Smile b) Nod c) Half- smile d) Say hi weakly, then make a weird face after they leave, usually getting more unwanted attention and talk from MORE strangers And at school, I feel like just walking through the whole day without saying anything back to anybody, but don't want people against me after the... Myspace incident I caused at my old school  |

| I've been making a little more effort to greet people when I've been walking.
I've noticed that older people will smile and greet me in return. Younger people will look at me like I'm a nutcase. |

| Small, not busy place, I'll take the time to say hello if the person looks like they're in a good mood.
At my job, I make a lot of eye contact with people I don't even know, and give them a greeting, it's polite and hey, I've gotten a call in compliment because of it. Somewhere busy, hard to find in a small town community like mine, I might make eye contact and then look past them. If someone looks busy, I'm not going to bother them, if they're all happy and hurray, they'll most likely enjoy a "Hey man". |
