Not only do I have to set quality to low, I often have to shrink the viewing window to get it to play at full speed. Any Suggestions?

I say, get a new processor and more RAM. And I think a 2.0 Ghz one and 256MB RAM should be enough for playing Shockwave and watching Flash movies

Well I'm asking if there is any kind of open source or video card that can make it easier on the processor to handle because the faster processor I can put in my machine is 600Mhz for some reason.

There's nothing to do except hardware upgrades, this is one reason why I object to Flash

I think it's ridiculous that a series of animated vector images with a low-quality MP3 playing in the background should run so incredibly slow on a 412MHz K6-III. I can still run some older 3D games on this thing at a decent framerate.

Don't even get me started on Flash video (i.e. YouTube)...absolutely unwatchable.

Oddly, I use YouTube just fine. Probably because I have both Flash 8 and alot of codecs. But videoes on Youtube only use a flash based player but not flash based graphics. Clicking the 1:1 ratio button makes the videoes play just fine on my system, providing the current ad in the banner is a not flash itself.

I've also found an old Shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D, which always plays at 60fps no matter how high the settings. So WTF?

...

Plus why doesn't Flash have MIDI support?

Because Flash sucks. I gave up a long time ago trying to find an explanation of why people like it.

Dunno. That's dumb though, because I can run Warcraft III on a pentium II 350Mhz without problems... Yes I do have that same problem with flash. scrwed up, in my opinion.

We should develop our multi-media platform. An open-source platform that doesn't so much processing power and can use midis! Using polygons instead of vector graphics like in SOTN.

People like Flash because it's the best web multimedia system out there. It's got problems, but it works on numerous browsers and OS's, has an impressively small movie size, and isn't very hard to use. Alternatives such as Shockwave and Java applets are bigger and clunkier, and less compatible and web scripting languages like javascript are a joke.

Flash? Flash is slow. Flash won't let you use MIDIs. Those are all anyone has against it, and MIDIs suck anyway.

I'd be pretty great if there were maybe a polygonal and/or sprite based Flash replacement, but good luck finding people actually willing help you with that.

Web and multimedia don't go together. If "numerous" means IE and Netscape-compatible, and only Linux, Mac, and Windows, sure (which, the Linux and Mac versions are old and have compatibiilty problems, even compared to the same Windows version). "Impressively small movie size", lmao. Also SVG is easier to make than Flash.

Shockwave is just as bad as Flash. imo, Java is easier and has far greater cross-platform support. How is javascript a joke? Almost all the time, it does what people use Flash for.... in about 5MB smaller and ten minutes faster.

MIDI is excellent, you must have a crap sound card.

Go with SVG (vector) or AVI (bitmap) or something (?).
