That is true, however... It just gives me a feeling that they might've deserved it. It isn't rocket science. I mean, if someone who doesn't know computers goes to WINDOWS or system32, they'd find it hidden, since they both contain vital files. If a computer illiterate knows that they shouldn't mess around with files they're not sure of, and only one source has informed them about this, things would be a bit undecided.

Just for a bit of an addition to idiotic hoaxes... I once had a tray icon, alternating between the green handicapped icon for Accessibility, and some other icon I don't remember. Anyways, it would periodically (about every 20 minutes or so) tell me that my computer is infected, and should immediately buy some crappy, unknown antivirus software. Norton couldn't get rid of it, Ad-Aware couldn't get rid of it, and Spybot couldn't get rid of it. I got on Google, and found a thing called HijackThis. After 4 days of assistance, I finally got rid of the damned thing.

It's always funny (and a bit ironic) that something malicious tells you that you have a virus, and need to buy/download something, which gives you even more viruses.

You're basically saying that ignorance should be punished? I thought that's what learning is for...

And about the other thing, yes. I once went to a site that allowed you to make a free scan of your system, everything looked so real and profesional, with technical explanations and spify graphics, so I said, why not?

And then it was like: "4 Virus found, asdf.exe.vrz - Trojan.downloader" or something like that, and I was like " I have 4 visuses and I have to install your software to get rid of them? Yeah right..."

I went on research and found out that site was blacklisted somewhere, and I made a full scan on my system, and found nothing malicious (besides "grabbing cookies").

So yeah, be careful with the hoaxes...

"Hey everyone, listen up, your attention if you please. Thought I would give you a warning cause I found out this morning of a dangorous, insideous computer virus. If you should get any mail with the subject "Stinky Cheese"....
....it will translate your documents into Swahili, make your TV record Gili, nutuer your pets, and give your laundry static cling! Look out!"

Thought of Weird Al first thing when I read this.
It's so stupid Who would make an email about a fake virus? It's so pointless...

There are other filenames like that in Windows NT-based systems, such as $UpCase. (They all start with a dollar sign, and I think it only works in the root of the drive.) It'll tell you the file already exists but you can never see it listed or open it; in reality it does exist but because it's so important it's hidden by the filesystem driver.

I've also seen those fake scanners that claim you have viruses and then (despite claiming to be free) ask for some huge amount of money to remove them.

What's even worse is anti-virus programs that cause more problems than the viruses themselves. Ahem, Norton.
