I've been away for a very very long time. I'm wondering if there is a place anywhere that archives ROM hacks. Back in 1999 there used to be, but i've been away since then, and i cant find anyplace like that now. When you create a new hack, how do you unleash it upon the unsuspecting world now-a-days?

I do beileve that many places spilt and form new areas, such as SSRG, place for classic sonic hacks, and well here at acmlm you have the mario bros hacking areas.
But I suppose zophars domain holds a lot for roms.

I dunno it just depends where you can get the patches, quite honestly, but if you want to try and make an area for all types of hacks, then good luck, I was thinking of starting one, but I am still hesitant about it... It takes a lot of time, something I don't have all the time.

anyways I really can't help you in the other departments. you just basically put up your rom on message boards (pic's features and such) and link to a download area. only some people who have a lot of time make giant sites devoted to downloading hacks, as I said I will try to gather a collection of patches of all sorts. can't say it will be now or soon, but I am going to see about it, just look around on the net and on zophars domain, o.o mabey by 2007 I could have a really active site, but not so active that bandwith skyrockets. distinctly why people use patches instead of roms.

I dont really have the time to make such a site either (too busy working on hacks and an origional game). It just seems like a no-brainer that there should be a big giant site where people can go that archives ROM hacks. It would be so much simpler than having to hope you see it on a message board somewhere, or having to seek out hundreds of different locations to see whats out there, which i just dont have the time to do. If such a place doesn't exist, it's just begging to be made!

I've seen an abundant amount of sites in my times with "ROM-hacking archives", in an effort to provide hackers with an easier way to find hacks. Unfortunately, I notice a lot of the time pages will get wiped, usually due to loss of interest or whatever, or there won't be any updates in ages, i.e. Zophar's Domain. Seeing as the scale of an archive you wish to see, I'd say your hopes are a bit too high. There are just so many ROM-hacks, good and bad, popular and unpopular, that have accumulated over several years, that it would extremely difficult to track down the old ones and keep an eye out for the new ones. I mean, believe me, it would be excellent to have a massive ROM-hack library, but unless anyone wants to take on a job as big as hunting down many ROM-hacks and keeping up to date with ones in progress, it may be a dream out of reach. Sorry .

My best advice would be to poke your head around here, that's the way I keep up to date with hacks that are up and about.

I think it's safe to say that ROM hacking needs to be subtle...since it's illegal, in most ways.

It would be convenient to have a rom hack site, but it's just too risky...that's what I think.

well in america, the only good thing that has seemed to happen about laws, you can have whatever you want on a website. legally.

Besides the only turely illegal thing about anything on the computer is making illegal flash cart copies or fake copies and selling them to people. aka Pirates, who usually remove logos and such.

I'm 99% sure the ips patch is legal, even if just putting up a ROM might not be.
I can see it would be a big job. Maybe if it only had complete hacks which have a significant number of changes or dumber ones which somehow managed to get popular it would'nt be as much work. I still think someone who has the freetime and interest ought to tackle this someday. Till then I'll probably be mostly in the dark about whats out there.
