This shows most of the font change already.

Tricky 1-up in the first level. I have since made it easier to obtain.

Just some changed blocks.

I'm also in need of some ideas for this hack. I'd appreciate any comments.

It's good to see ambitious hacks based on overlooked games like that one... _¬

I couldn't care less about graphics, so long as it has great level design

Right now it just looks like minor edits to the existing levels, these hacks almost never get played, try to spice things up (a lot).

Get an existing theme going. How about doing a theme no one has done yet (that I know of ), like a future theme?

I've only begun this hack, and it is my first actual attempt at one.

Celice: I'm rather limited with graphics and palettes in this hack... So unless DahrkDaiz wants to help me out with this problem (Which I really doubt...) I am only able to do themes which SMB had. (I'm not much for whole-hack themes... I'm more of the world-by-world hacker.)

Dr.Mario (author?) had a shot of SMB with a desert theme. Turban and pyrimids could be seen. Something like that.

Looks okay. This is my first ever seeing you make a hack out of Smb1.

Could you show a link to this...? I'm interested... Perhaps I could even do a snow background, a la BMF's Christmas SMB2 hack, or a rain level.

...I suck at themes, I know

Hm... that IS pretty good.

However, I'll need to know how to change teh GFX index of the level in the rom, as well as add new ones

Not really, just hack the graphics that are already there.

I don't get the point of this hack. You're posting the thread to show of... it's spiffy new graphics? Recolors? ASM hacking? New level layout.
I see the new font and title screen, as well as the couple minor level tweaks, but there's no way someone would make a topic about that...

The point of this hack is to be a new set of levels.

I'm just needing early opinions about the font and whatnot. I'd rather use a font that people would like to see, not a boring one.

Spoiler:
SMB2J

And the reason I need to know that, Dragonsbrethren, is because I'll want to be using various ground blocks for the ground depending on the level's theme.

If you're just begginning the hack, then it's fine. We'll have just to wait to see more changes. The font is simple but well designed . Maybe you can make the hack have more high places by using those unbreakable blocks. That would add more challenge to get to some places.

Like this:

I don't know if this can be done, but anyways, good luck with your hack

use wall jump Trick! :
Walljump is when you jump towards a wall and somehow Mario's foot catches the wall and allows to jump again, boosting from the wall. In the example image on the right, three walljumps are performed.

Theory: Walljump happens because the game does a floor check (a simple "is position divided by 16 even? Is there a solid block below him?" test) even during a wall-ejection. Wall-ejection is SMB's mechanism to adjust Mario's horizontal position properly when his left side and right side have a different inside-wall status. The game ejects Mario towards the opposite of his steering.

To perform a walljump, you need two things:

* Some horizontal speed (towards the wall)
* Mario's feet must hit the wall exactly at a block boundary (every 16 pixels)

It's possible to perform walljump from any non-lethal solid material (bricks, pipes, etc).

Well... I don't want to make people have to rely on obscure tricks to finish the hack...

(Edit: Plus, that looks fake as hell)

I've finished the first level today, in school. I'm not so used to YY-ME and SMBUtil... However, I'd like to think I'm picking up on them fairly quickly.

Well I figured I'd put my two cents in about that "desert theme." It was more than just editing the GFX, I had to change the way the backroud tiles were arranged, but that's not too hard. There is an editor out there for it. If you intend on doing some nice GFX changes I'll host it up on my site so you can get it when I get the time (It's finals week... blah)
