Three out of three random people agree, circular d-pads suck.
I find them to be too twitchy to be useful, compared to the more traditional four-point design.

What do you think? Do you also dislike the circular d-pad design, or do you prefer another design?

I have to agree; the 4-point d-pads are better than circular ones. I don't think circular ones are outright bad though; it's easier to do a diagonal move on a circular pad, IMO.

Control sticks of N64 and GC fame are pretty sweet too.

I was raised by an NES, an SNES, and an N64. Needless to say, I'm biased in favor of a normal 4-way d-pad. I have too much difficulty precisely controlling with a circular one, as diagonals tend to be too easy...

I, too, have been raised in the way of the NES. I guess that does make me kinda biased...

Thinking about it some more.. the only time I've had problems with circular pads is when it's from a third party. I loved this one XBox third party controller because the analog sticks felt just perfect... but when I'd play a fighting game, or have to resort to using the D-pad, I'd constantly hit the wrong direction because of its twitchyness or whatnot...

I normally perfer a sturdy d-pad that won't make my thumb feel tired after a while. Unfortunately, I can't remember which was the perfect one right now...

Circular D-Pads and I dont agree...

At all...

Theyre especially bad at playing puzzle games with.

The cursor never goes where I want it too and I lose that 16x chain D:

Plus circulars are just not... ergonomic. They dont feel right to me

Cross is good for some games, circle is good for others. So I'd vote "don't care", but there's no such option.

My god, suddenly I remember the blisters and frustration that circular d-pads cost me, because I used to buy 3rd party gamepads and attempt to compete in ANY 2D fighting game. The pain, the losses (that would have never happened), the humility...

I know better nowadays to only buy 1st party controllers. I fail hard at the most simple of games with circular d-pad controllers.

Circular D-Pads are good for 3D games, 4-way ones for 2D ones. If you know how to handle the circular ones, you can play most games with them, so I don't think they suck.

My problem with circular pad is that I need to position the control on my hand very exactly, otherwise when I hit right, it's read as up+right and that makes me lose.

I don't have those problems with the +, so I voted for "circulars suck"

Circular D-pads seems to be only a way to avoid the lawyers of Nintendo. :/

Yeah the + is patented, or at least used to.

i like the traditional 4 way d-pads, but even those sometimes have diagonal tendencies i don't want. i can easily tell this by playing gradius 3 on my ps2. moving diagonally at bad times is killer in that game(you can especially tell in the final stages, claustrophobes beware!). i wish they would be more separated, like a keyboard. it's much easier when you don't accidentally have your fingers more up than down.

Or they could buy the rights and use them, couldn't they?

But anyway, I like + pads better just as I like 2D games better than 3D... Those times will never come again, I guess...

I too, was biased, so I have to vote for circular pads suck, I grew up with the SNES, N64, and Gamecube, I'm just not used to the circulars.

Meh, since the SNES at least, d-pads have been eight point, not four-point, even if they're not circular. I can't think of any application of the non-circular d-pad that doesn't better the circular d-pad in any way, so it's circular d-pad for the win.

Circular D-Pads make things easier, if you have the coordination. Lack of precision results in a diagonal when going for a cross direction. I like the circular ones because they're easy on the hands when rotation in necessary (more for fighting games - otherwise I'd use the analog stick).

wait...so is a circular d-pad nothing more than an analog stick? because the only circular d-pad I know of the NES max controller...

analog sticks are nice when you play directional games for hours (like sports games). However, i like d-pads for RPGs and stuff...
