Have just been on the phone to lawyers, having discovered more shit my ex did.

More debt. Have three days to find out a way out of it, cause that's when they'll call back.

Fucking... fuck fuck. It's less than previous amounts, but they want it faster / are offering me harder options.

I'm so fed up with this. Way to burst the little bubble I had now I was just starting to feel like things might maybe get better.

EDIT: I feel a little better now I've cried for two hours straight, and obsessive-compulsively cleaned my house.

Tomorrow I have to find out how I can get $2,500 in 3 days. I don't have anything I can sell that's worth that much... I don't even think I have several things I can sell that will add up to that much.

Bah that sucks.

All I wonder is why this late and why do they want it so quickly? Bet there was some massive amount of red tape involved. This kinda comes out of nowhere. They should at least give you more time than three days to pay that amount back, since you apparently didn't know about it until now.

Do you have family you can count on? I know it really sucks to ask them for money, but if you're in a bind, I'm sure somebody can help you. You'd pay them back somehow.

3 days... wow, that's really damn short, especially for making THAT much money. you've got a ton of stuff laying around your house i'm sure. why not try ebaying some of it? it might not get you much cash, but i'm sure something might be like a goldmine. it could be worth a shot, right?

well, i know someone from austria, which isn't very close to australia at all but it sure looks similar!
...but if you couldn't, that'd be really damn stupid. some people might not ship out of their country of residence due to shipping costs, but if it was just ebay not liking australia... O_o

random hilarious fact: the guy i'm buying gradius 5 off of says "I WILL NOT SHIP TO ITALY!!!" i don't know why, i guess he hates italy for some reason. with that said, FUCK YOU ITALY!!!

Oh dear...theres no way at all you can try to turn this around on your ex? I mean, you couldn't take him to court, or something similar, since from what I'm making of this its his fault anyway? I wish I had advice for you here, but being someone who makes so very little money herself, I don't think I'd be much for advice...I hope things turn around though you're such a nice person Tarale, its not fair that you have to deal with such crap in your life.

I would love to take him to court for all of this, but I cannot. I've discussed the matter with three lawyers now (in relation to the prior two debts), and each of them have told me that more or less, I'm screwed.

Basically, even though this is a far lesser amount than the other two debts that my ex has racked up under my name, it's still enough to Bankrupt me, which is not something that I want to happen. The reason why it's likely to Bankrupt me is that they are not willing to accept any terms whereby I pay them the money over a period of time (as another creditor is willing to do). They want a lump sum, and they would like it fast.

The amount they want is actually more than $2,500; but that's what they are willing to accept if I can find a way to pay it and notify them within the next three days.

I have about $10. I don't have anything that's really worth a lot of money that I can sell either; hell, even my car is only worth maybe $600.

Overall, I'm just freaked out that this shit is happening all over again. I was just starting to feel like my life might approach "normal" and this happened. And it makes me wonder how many more things like this are going to happen, how many other little nasties my ex did behind my back that will rear their ugly heads and become problematic for me.

Essentially, I'm in the same situation I was with an earlier debt; only it's a smaller amount in less time. If they were willing in any way to hold off and give me a bit of time to save up some cash, this would be FAR less problematic.

Feeling a bit better today at least anyway. Freaked, tired, and depressed, but better than yesterday -- I'm not in one of those things where I have to clean or I'll cry...

It's very messed up that you have to pay for someone else's debt, especially when it was just a BF (you were'nt married were you?). Even if you cant directly get the money from him, could'nt you charge him with theft of the items he bought using your money and maybe get them back and sell them to help cover the debt? (assuming he bought material things with the money). I'm not sure i understand how this could happen, why cant you just charge him with stealing from you or identity theft or something similar? I'm not familiar with how the Australian legal system works. There is just something funadamentally wrong with holding someone responsible for the debts of their BF, you did'nt co-sign on his loans did you? Are the collectors also after him?

Tarale,

Was your ex that same boy that I remember you wrote about a year or so ago who you had lived with and was experimenting a relationship with? If so, I'm surprised, because he at the time didn't seem so bad.

It bites having someone rack up debt under your name and then having creditors demand that you pay them back. Did the lawyers explain why you were screwed?

beneficii -- no, that was somebody else. I still have feelings for my former housemate. He is still a great guy.

NSNick -- No, I can't get a loan. There's problems on my credit file thanks to my ex which makes that problematic.

Jomb -- They call it 'Sexually Transmitted Debt' and the lawyers have said that there isn't a whole lot I can do about things But there is ONE creditor who is trying to Bankrupt him over a previous amount of some $27,000.

I don't mean to be rude... but didn't you notice that this guy was living like a KING when you were with him? Unless he was really good about hiding it. It sounds like he racked up $50,000+ debt, by adding this to what you've said already.

No, because he wasn't living like a king. It's not like he's gone and spent this on food, clothes, cars and toys.

He's gone into "business arrangements" behind my back. Business arrangements he went to some lengths to hide from me. It seems some of this was for computer equipment that was sold to somebody; but he never used the money he got to pay back the wholesaler... ~_~

And so on...

Well, I think there needs to be more options for people in positions like mine anyway. The law seems to assume all fault and guilt is with me and leave me with no options.

The thing is, while what happened doesn't count as "Identity Theft" as such, from my point of view it may as well be the same thing. But it's not legally seen as the same thing, it's seen as "Sexually Transmitted Debt" which places me into a much harder situation.

I've contacted the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman about my current problem, and I'm hoping for a resolution on the matter.... I doubt I'll get it, but at least because this is telecommunications based there is somewhere I can go in this instance to seek assistance.

I dont know, it seems like faulty laws if all you have to do to inherit someone's debt is sleep with them. It'd be understandable if you were married, or if you personally signed for a loan then gave the money to him and he skipped on you. Seems like if you were under-handed, all you'd have to do is seduce some poor bloke and then he'd inherit the debt from you What you got from him may be nastier than most actual STDs!
How does he have the right to use your name without your knowledge to rack up debt just because you are dating? I call that identity theft, or fraud, and its a crime either way! How are they making the victim of a crime pay for the crime? If he beat you up and put you in the hospital would that be your fault to? It just does'nt make sense....

I don't get it either, but it seems to be the way it is.

He did a bunch of things behind my back under my business name. Things he went to considerable lengths to hide from me. But because it was my business name -- and may as well just flat out be my regular name -- I'm the one responsible for it.

I have spoken to three lawyers about this, and in each instance I've been told I'm more or less screwed. *sigh*

So, I have to find ways to actually cope with the shit that gets thrown at me courtesy of his dodgy actions. There's no point crying over something I cannot change, so the emphasis then becomes on how to deal with it.

Because his actions mean I cannot get a loan, I think after I sort out this current thing, I need to make sure I have about $3,000 in the bank at all times in case something like this comes up again

Can you just use someone's business name without having some kind of clearance to do so? Did he sign the checks using your name or his? Around here, I have a business checking account, and when I got the account I had to list who all have permission to use it, it would be illegal for someone who does'nt have permission to access the account, even if I am sleeping with her

But yes, the facts are the facts, if thats how it works where you are, you have to live with it. You are talking Australian dollars right? So those sums are actually about half what I'm thinking when I imagine US dollars, right? Either way thats still a hefty amount of money. You need to marry someone with good credit so you'll be able to get a home loan or whatever else you might want a loan for!

No wonder you have been depressed....
