I was at taco bell today and my meal cost $3.91. I give the lady $10 and she's about to give me $6.09 when I hand her a penny. She looks confused and hands me $7. I sat and ate my meal trying to decide whether to give her the dollar back. In the end I did, but I almost wonder whether I should bother caring about gaining $.90 wrongfully. What do you do in this situation, flip a coin? It's unlikely she'd get in trouble for having a drawer off by that little, unless she does it all the time. Would you give it back if it was like... $5 extra? $100? $.01?

If it was petty cash, I wouldn't try. It's often not worth the time. If it was a significant sum though, I would try to find it's owner. Maybe... I'd start trying at 100$. Maybe 50$.

I doubt she'll get in trouble for a drawer being short a dollar or so. Heck, I won't yell at my guys for being short unless its $3 over.
But I understand how you feel. I get the same look with customers at times when the total is...lets say $11.16 and they give me a $20 and then I'll ask them if they have $1.06, or just six cents even. |

I used to work as a customer service maanger in retail. We gave a $5 buffer. No real ethical question hear because the amount involved is rather trivial. Eveybody gains and loses a dollar now and then.

I will burn in hell.
I wouldn't dare trick a cashier into giving me too much change, but I wouldn't tell if they did it by themself. |

It would probably depend on how I was feeling at the time. A dollar I would give back.
$100? I dunno. I'd feel guilty. But I'm also so broke I can't afford books for 2 of my classes this quarter. So if I thought I could get away with it I might keep it even if I felt awful about it. I really need the book for my Stats class so I can do the homework. |

I would have told here "That means 6 bills and 1 dime." Most of the time it's probably a teenager, like me.
The closest thing I had to this was at Sonic, I think, and the total was $8.99, and the car hop gives me the $8 and I told her to keep the small change. |

Solely depends on mood and amount.
I wouldn't trick a cashier but if I get an extra amount, fine by me. They pay for their own mistakes. |
