Just watching the Late Night News here, and they've just run a brief segment on Jabberwacky, claiming that the AI will replace things like call centre jobs.

I think not!

But all the same, I think it's a little interesting. Voice sounds a bit funny to me, but then I didn't expect it to sound "right" either. But I imagine they have a long way to go before something like that really could replace an experienced call centre / customer support operator.

Voice recognition tends to be awkward and is generally inefficient nowadays.

1.) Bad for the economy
2.) Machines cannot recognise everything quite yet
3.) It's expensive

I think the technology on the latter needs alot of improvements before ever hitting the telecommunication businesses. I think the idea is kindof, well... crap.

But sentient machines amazes me. I actually want to make one myself... hmm.

One thing I would like to do is making some AI of my own, and have it keep talking with this one...

This bot gives me nonsense on most of the questions I give it though...

Me: Well, I gotta go!
It: Oh please, don't stop!
Me: Haha, you make it sound like we're copulating.
It: Make what sound like a computer?

Better than your average chatbot, but still...

The main problem I see is that people will think it's just a recorded message and will just hang up... kind of rending the whole thing moot

I wonder what they'd do if you blew a dog whistle at it. Yell in pain?

I HATE talking to machines on the phone. It's so akward. I'd rather use those touch tone menus than try to explain something to a computer that can't understand what I'm saying or what I mean.

Companies are investing millions of dollars into voice recognition systems to enhance the customer experience for tech support. However, for immigrants like my mom, it is a pain because of her accent.

I highly doubt AI will replace human tech support 100%. However, they may save companies in the future lots of money, which is why the technology is being developed. In some ways, voice recognition technologies will help the physically disabled to possibly command a computer to do work. The best people to test the voice recognition technology is to use it in customer support area.

Yeah, I dislike it too. Telstra (telephone company) makes you do it here.

"In a few short words, could you describe the reason why you are calling?"
Me: "tel-e-phone dis-con-nect-ion"
"Did you say "broadband"?"

Actually they usually do a fairly good job of understanding what I'm saying, just not what I mean. They give you a very limited set of choices that don't cover many scenarios. (This isn't native to voice systems either; see Windows Useless Troubleshooter.) But the real problem is it's just... weird trying to talk to a machine. You have to break everything down into very simple short phrases, and they don't pick up on nor have any emotion, which makes things uncomfortable.

I also love how much of an idiot I feel when I have to talk to it.

I mean, I'm sitting at my desk saying "telephone disconnections" over and over, getting louder or slower or such in an attempt to get the system to understand me. And my collegues look at me funny.

Even AI like we can only dream of right now wouldn't replace human support. There would always be fundamental differences in the way humans and machines understand things. The very idea is absurd...

I agree with you, Taryn. I also work at a call center. We do have an automated system, but it sucks so bad that 70% of the time the caller ends up talking to a person anyway.

Am I the only one that read the title and thought of American Idol?

But yeah... automated help desks drive me crazy. It's much much nicer having an actual person there that can understand better and generally do a better job helping you.

American Idol is a singing competition show -- called AI by quite a few people because of the name. American Idol.

I was hoping for a more interesting explanation That's fairly dull.

Well, generally when I say "AI", I'm referring to artificial intelligence

Aww... *hugs* I just thought there'd be some wacky anecdote about some American Idol starlet screaming about being replaced by something....

nope, nope... I'm sure it has happened at some point (the show is wild wild WILD), but I was just talking about the letters in the title. Before I clicked on it, I was trying to figure out what in the world you meant... not being replaced by American Idol.
