... Mmmk... What does everyone think of this one? I got it today, and have played through it once. It seems pretty good; have only played the multiplayer on download play a few days ago and had my ass handed to me, so I don't know what to say there. Heh. Probably definitely better than Assault, I must say.

Is it true it's not possible to use the D-pad at all? That might stop me from getting it, because I'm ridiculously unwieldy with the stylus and even more so with the thumb pad.

Agreed. This was somewhat the case for me also with Metroid Prime Hunters. You could use the D-Pad and everything instead of the stylus, but then it felt pretty clunky.

So yeah, I'm still skeptical. How are the controls? From the previews and everything I watched it seemed like you almost always use the stylus.

I've played it. It's an odd-ball to the Star Fox series. You use the stylus for everything, but shooting. That is EVERY other button (Not including the obvious things that it isn't.) The story is the REAL odd part. It has tactics! You are in an over world and you move each turn, and if a enemy crosses your path, you get to have a battle with it in full-range mode style. There are also time limits everywhere. It's odd, but it's fun if you get used to the controls.

The requirement of using the stylus for everything in this game has successfully managed to get me to not buy it.

I might pick it up later on. I'm not a huge fan of the controls in Hunters.

Yeah, you guys are missing out. The controls are very intuitive once you get used to them, which takes but a few minutes.

And the game is fundictive. I have beaten the game five times since I got it yesterday afternoon.

Ah, so the gameplay is similar to SF64? That's major points ++ in my book. I liked that game so much, I might end up buying this, despite my extreme fail with a stylus.

Shrug. How much bonus unlockable stuff is on there?

I have yet to see any unlockables except gallery stuff. Once you get an ending or complete a mission having a specific pilot, you can view them in the gallery, you know. And once you do a certain level it's added to the stage select.

And there's like, a billion different routes. And you'd think it'd get tedious playing through the same opening level and first few levels to get to the different routes, but the more you play, the more the opening levels are replaced with functionally similar levels which are harder and have different layouts, so no problem there, either. And the pilots and crafts all have different abilities which affect gameplay, with the exception of in general the cornerian fighters all play the same since they all use the same craft. Like, Falco has a four-long boost meter, has only one bomb, can lock on to multiple craft at once, has very poor health, has a single laser, and his barrel rolls recover three time for a successful attack deflection. Slippy, though, has a two-long boost meter, can hold up to three bombs at once, has a plasma lasers, can't lock on, and his barrel rolls recover the standard two. Out of everyone I've played as, I'd have to say I like Panther the most. Ha ha, wacky. Conversely, Leon totally sucks.

I stayed up all night playing it, and I was nodding off during class today. I maintain that it was worth it.

Um, I wouldn't really say it's "like Star Fox 64" because it has no on rails areas. I know Star Fox without them doesn't seem right but it is a very, very good game and I would go so far as to say that my experience so far leads me to believe SFC is superior, though on-rails stuff would have been very much welcome...

Yeah, I've always felt weird having to hold up a DS, use the shoot button, and stylus at the same time. Chances are, I'll very suck at this game.

But it sounds too awesome to ignore...

From what I've played of Star Fox 2, it seems somewhat similar.

One gripe I have though is that the controls are 99% stylus. It would have been better to shift some of them to d-pad or buttons (depending on your handedness, I'm left handed but the default inverse look controls work well for me anywas). e.g. boost and brake should be separated b/c they are easy to accidentally do with a stylus. having to do a roll while also trying to steer is also obnoxious I think. It comes down to it that I have the same irritations with this as with MP: hunters controls.

That said, I still find it pretty playable and will continue to play it as long as the challenge curve stays steady. I always lose via the strategy map and not from loss of all arwings. I think the time limits are somewhat constraining until you figure out that the rings give you time bonuses and other stuff. Nova bombs are nice since you can drop them anywhere, though you have to stop steering in order to do this which can be disastrous.

How are you even supposed to steer like that? The whole point of having a d-pad and buttons is so that you can do multiple things at once (namely, move and push buttons), but now it just sounds like you can't even boost or brake without becoming a total sitting duck.

There are some things that the touch screen is good for, and this is most definitely not one of them.
