You know that adventure quest ad that pops up at the bottom of the screen sometimes when you post something? H8! I have 32.6kbps modem and it slows down to evolution process speed from snail speed. H8! What ads do you hate, and why?

On Myspace, there exist ads for a website nicknamed "True", a dating-type site. The women in the ads are usually looking really promiscuous. The problem with this is only that its annoying to have people around me on the computer and to come across dating site ads all the time, especially if its parents that are walking by. Another set of annoying ads would be pornography ads on some favorite torrent search sites... bargh.

This one's easy: SmileyCentral ads! Every time I hear "OMIGOSH! NO WAI!" I feel like stabbing the idiot who came up with talking smilies.
There are also those flashing "WINNER WINNER WINNER" banners and the "Shoot the [insert thing here] and win a free [insert unreleased consle here] which are pretty annoying too.

Turning off javascript is a wonderful thing

Also, regarding those dating service ads, I beleve my BLA BLA: 600 INCREDIBLY USELESS FACTS book said that roughly 30% of all women in those ads are married.

Here's my top 5 most annoying...
Starting with the 5th...
5. Those STUPID pop-ups that say "ZOMG YOUVE WON A FREE LAP TOP!!!"
4. Those windows that look like you are on a Windows comp, even if your not, and how the whole window is one big link.
3. Those things with the hourglasses, old looking p.c. window, and the way it moves around like that drives me NUTS!
2. All of those, "ZOMG!!! WIN THIS STUPID GAME AND WIN A FREE PSP!!!" games that you can't get rid of.
1. One REALLY ANNOYING ad that takes up the entire page! using some slow loading flash thing. It ALSO makes a @^*% LOAD of noise!

There's another annoying one, but I almost never see it, so it's not here. That would be those porn ads.

AdblocK yay
ftw

but if I were to ever see one, I'd probably say Flash ads are the worst. Since Flash is the most evil of all web plugins.

I dunno, Flash manages to do what WMA and Quicktime fails at. And don't get me started about realplayer.

I remember the time when I saw one of thoose "If this banner is flashing, you won ads" and it wasn't flashing... I guess it didn't load propely.

Heh, funny. Apparently according to the Gamefaqs server "adventure quest" tends to be overloaded with users fairly often, which makes you wonder why they still advertise it.

Ads? What are those? I blocked everything remotely resembling one ages ago.

Really, though, those IntelliTXT ads which replace some words you say with links are ANNOYING. So much so, I moved my site off of a server I'd been on for four years when they said I needed to use those.

I loathe almost all advertising. Let me try to think of some of the biggest reasons why...

  • Adware and other legal viruses.
  • do do do, do do do do do, do do HEY CLICK HERE FOR FREE RONEX do do do... Web sites do NOT make noise. Anything that makes noise on my computer against my will dies, especially if I have music on.
  • Flash ads that take forever to load. These also often make noise.
  • Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge GIF banners. In some cases more than a megabyte.
  • Popup after popup after popup within popup.
  • Sites that have layouts like this:
    Ads here
    --------Annoying-ads-here-----------More-ads-hereAbout 80 pixel wide
    Annoying animated ad here
    content area here
More-ads-hereAbsolutely nothing or more ads here
    Ads here

These also tend to put about 50 words on the page, split across 10 pages. For an example, see every news site ever made.
  • Ads that move.
  • "Fake" popups that are in fact floating layers rather than separate windows. Even worse than regular popups as you can't close them in many cases.
  • Transition pages containing nothing but huge ads or popups.
  • Forums that show ads even to registered users, and/or forums that throw in fake posts which are actually ads.

I knew there was a problem when I came across a page (IIRC, the original Gameshark website) that literally used EVERY SINGLE ONE of these (except the last since it wasn't a forum.) Yes, that's right... It came after an ad transition page. It tried to install adware. It opened popup and popunder windows. At least 70% of the page's content was huuuuuuge slow-loading annoying moving GIF banners. It popped up a Flash animation in a floating layer that took ages to load, played sound, couldn't be closed AND FOLLOWED THE FUCKING MOUSE CURSOR. ALL ON ONE PAGE. Upon seeing that I promptly hard-rebooted my computer (as the ads had slowed it to a crawl and I didn't want to wait 10 minutes while watching them to do it the right way), downloaded Mozilla and Proxomitron, and nuked the hell out of every ad I saw from then on. Any time I see an ad I either AdBlock it or write a Proxomitron filter to kill it. (Even for those transition pages; I replace some piece of text on the page with a meta refresh tag. ) It's been pretty nice online ever since.

Oh and get this - that final loud moving slow uncloseable Flash ad that pushed me over the edge was advertising the US army. I was maybe 15 at the time AND I LIVE IN CANADA.

All advertising is blocked at my work, so I don't have much problem with ads at all.

What I do find funny though is the clients that call me and complain that the ads are blocked -- because they seem to think that the entire site is blocked... Even though they can read the information they wanted....

Clearly those Smiley Central ads are the worst.
*Moves mouse-"SAY SOMETHING, WHAT!!?!?!!?!"
"BITE ME"

What about those ones that pop up under your window and take up MORE then the whole screen? Then you gotta Alt-F4 or C+A+D it...

Or even those ones that also pop under and go "Congratulations, todays a special day, because you are a winner!..." in a squeeky nerd voice...
This one really sucks when you are blaring music...You have no idea where it comes from at first and it scares you.

Cant forget ads with partial nudity in them...I mean, I enjoy them, but I feel weird when people near me notice them

Yeah, I HATE THOSE TO HELL! The maker needs to jump into the lava!!!

I really hate when the pop ups come up after you leave that site (the one that started the pop ups). I'm sure Wikipedia doesn't need pop ups.
