I read at this site http://www.neshq.com/lists/complete-nes.txt that there may be a prototype of Super Mario Bros. 3 out there. Has anyone ever seen/heard of it?

It's just a crappy hack of SMB2J, nothing more.

You mean this one? I know this is a hack for sure. But, as NESHQ has listed SMB3 as a prototype on the complete nes list, I thought that it might be one copy out there. I've heard about it at some other forums as well.

There is no SMB3 prototype, at least not in any known collectors' hands. As far as I know, the only NES Mario proto that has been confirmed to exist (and has been dumped, albeit privately) is SMB2.

I have every known NES rom in existence, (11,000+ roms). There is no such ROM that you describe.

Actually it should say, "everything in the GoodNES set" unless you really do have all the ROMs not listed by GoodNES as well

There probably is a SMB3 prototype, really. It's likely either bitrotting away somewhere, or locked deep in the bowels of Nintendo.

Probably both.

If the guy was refusing to dump it, the whole frikin super mario comunity would raise hell on their fan sites until he did. bassically, if a collecter was refusing to dump it, it would mean we would know about his having it and it would be all over different boards and websites.

Collector's have been known to be VERY stubborn about dumping games. It took a long time for the NWC cart to be dumped, for example.

Yes, but the point is we would know about the existence of the cart. If it was made public that a man was contacted who owns the cart, and was refusing to dump it. That would give us solid evidence that the prototype exists. I also folowed the earthbound nes struggle. That took a while.
