Shen: "Doe was an assassin much like Nijote, but I don't believe there is a sliver of good anywhere in Doe like there was with Nijote. Even when Nijote was just pure darkness, there was a little ray of light left in her soul, Doe has no light, no darkness, I'm not sure if Doe even has a soul..."

Shen looked out over the encampment as the explosion lit up the sky.

Shen: "That wasn't Luke, so it was probably Doe. If Doe is like any other assassin, he... she... is stubborn."

Luke laughed, half of the town was completely gone and the semi-heartless didn't seem to be hurt a bit. A few off them looked towards Luke and Doe, some of their limbs just shadows. One looked at Luke a little more closely.

Semi-Heartless: "Hey, aren't you that underground rock star? Where's your dancer chick at?"

Luke: "What the hell kind of question is that? Where do you think she is? She ran away from this hell hole of a world."

Doe: "If you'll excuse me I'll just go on ahead."

Doe started walking towards the outskirts of the town, towards the group.

Semi-Heartless: "Hey, what about one last show for all of us semi-heartless? We're about to turn into real heartless as soon as the siege on Origin's Tower begins."

Luke exploded into a fit of laughter.

Luke: "Hahaha, I have the perfect song for you! I call it... Requiem of the Phoenix."

Doe approached the group as if nothing was awkward about it. Shen looked at Doe nervously and then looked at Ark, the same nervous look on her face.

Ark: "Where's Luke?"

Doe: "Being a spoony bard."

Ark didn't know whether to laugh or not.

Shen: "Let's go... we should get to Origin's Tower, Luke has the ability to catch up."

Shen opened up a portal and waited for everyone.

Grey: "Origin's Tower, eh...? Surprised that place is still standing, after all of this hellishness. Still, for a glorified recycling center for souls, it's pretty tough."

He closed his eyes and was the first through the portal, taking a passing glance at Shen along the way. She was hiding something within her, he could tell...

Even if she couldn't.

Garro was slightly less resolute about the journey. His past dealings with Origin's tower had been slightly less than fun, and it seemed like every time Origin was involved in one of these little affairs, there was a high risk of excessive harm.

He didn't have much time to weigh his options, though, as Ark grabbed him by the collar and pulled him through.

Ark: "Don't worry. Around here, you'll be far too busy to die."

Doe: "..."

Doe looked around as he/she exited the portal. Countless heartless were swarming the tower. As far as Doe could see, black covered the land. Doe pulled out his/her gun and attached certain parts turning it into a sniper rifle.

Shen: "That's quite a few heartless..."

Shen was more disturbed with the massive heartless that kept ramming into the tower. Her blue eyes scoured the black landscape and rose up the tower to find Origin waiting at the top of his tower. He is alive.

Ark: "Wow..."

Grey: "So... we have to fight them all?"

Grey obviously wasn't excited.

Garro: "This is suicide. I don't want to die, I just came back to life."

Garro half turned back to the portal as it closed, locking him in the battlefield.

Shen: "We just have to make it to the tower."

Garro: "And how do you propose we survive that trek?"

As Garro finished his question, black fire began to raise above the crowd of heartless and soon a burning black figure floated in the air. It shouted something, but it was just gibberish to the group.

Ark: "Dark Phoenix is leading an assault? I can take care of him if the--"

Ark didn't finish as a brilliant light flashed, temporarily blinding everyone...

Luke had setup a impromptu stage over the rubble of the bar. He watched as people gathered. They would have no idea what hit them.

Luke: "All right! You semi-heartless scum, prepare yourself for the best music you've ever heard!"

Luke started to play incredibly quickly, but no sound escaped his guitar.

Luke: "I call this Requiem of the Phoenix!"

Luke continued to play and everyone's ears started to ring. Something was coming from the guitar, but no one could tell what exactly it was.

Luke: "...or as some of you might fear... It's the end to rebirth, the end to reincarnation. The end of your absolute fate. I'm freeing you and you're going to hate me for it!"

Eleven chains appeared around every single semi-heartless. They looked around in fear as one of the chains shattered on every single one of them. As the chain shattered, they burst into light and vanished.

Luke: "To break the chains of fate is to unleash all the emotions... Hatred for the world, hatred for the one who took their loved ones away. Dark Phoenix... HAHAHAHA!"

...Torrents of flame rose all around Origin's Tower, incenerating heartless like paper. A bright figure appeared to contrast the dark figure that was Dark Phoenix.

Dark Phoenix: "You!? How do you have power again!?"

Phoenix just stared at Dark Phoenix.

Dark Phoenix: "Then don't answer! It doesn't matter, I can feel the hatred in that power! Soon you'll be corrupt and be just like me!"

Phoenix: "This power isn't for me... You've already taken away all my power... As you destroyed the world with your heartless you tried to take my soul too... I cannot stand up to you... You're like a big brother and I'm just your little sister..."

Dark Phoenix: "And that's all you will ever be!"

Phoenix sighed as Dark Phoenix started to move closer.

Phoenix: "However... I'm sure you're aware Dracoon can handle this amount of power with no problem."

Dark Phoenix: "You can't! He doesn't have a soul!"

Phoenix ignored Dark Phoenix as she dropped to the earth. Heartless spread away to allow her pleanty of room to land and Dracoon stood right in front of where she landed. Some heartless could smell Phoenix's heart and tried to approach her, but were instantly incinerated.

Phoenix: "I never thought that it'd come to this..."

Dracoon: "You have a 64% chance of death by doing this. When you're turned into a human you won't have any protection from the heartless. I can't protect you."

Phoenix: "I know..."

Dracoon turned around to look at Dark Phoenix. Phoenix approached Dracoon and put her hands on his back, her hands seemed to enter Dracoon and her brightness faded rapidly. Soon it was all gone and she was just a human. Dracoon took a step away from Phoenix and flaming wings bursted from his back. He took off from the ground towards Dark Phoenix who looked simply astonished.

Dark Phoenix rose higher into the sky, making sure that the heartless wouldn't be caught in the cross fire of his and Dracoon's battle.

Ark: "Damn... I wish I knew what was going on."

Shen: "Phoenix gave her powers to Dracoon. We need to destroy these heartless to help him out."

Ark looked at Shen like she was insane. That was a horrible idea.

Ark: "We have to get to the tower! The heart of the world is inside the tower, we can destroy the heartless from there!"

Shen: "Can you do that?"

Ark: "Yes!"

Ark started to move directly towards the tower.

Doe: "Stop."

Ark stopped and turned back to Doe who was aiming his sniper rifle into the distance. Doe suddenly fired the gun and a small light exploded in the distance where Dracoon and Phoenix had been.

Tears rolled down Phoenix's cheeks, she was afraid of death like this. Would she turn into a heartless? Some of the heartless began to approach her, most of them still afraid that she could burn them. One brave heartless came close to her, almost within reach, it's twisted form seeming to try and sniff out Phoenix's heart. A bright blast of light vaporized the heartless. Other's began to approach Phoenix, but the hail of light kept coming.

Doe was now moving and shooting, reloading his gun at an incredibly speed. Shen wasn't sure exactly what to do as Ark went in another direction, destroying the heartless in his way. Almost too late, Shen noticed that Doe was ignoring the heartless right in front of him/her.

Shen: "Doe, I can save her from her!"

Doe didn't seem to listen and forced Shen to use her soul energy to destroy the heartless right in front of Doe. At the same time she reached out with her soul energy to touch Phoenix's.

Phoenix: "This warmth... Shen?"

Shen: "Stay still, I can protect you... we're coming for you."

A barrier appeared on Phoenix and the heartless went mad trying to destroy it.

Ark: "Good, this way we can do both things at once..."

Ark leaped into the air and landed on a heartless, destroying it with his spear. The other heartless seemed stunned by this move of recklessness. Ark didn't give them a second to move as crystals appeared all around him, shooting off randomly into the heartless.

There was another figure located within the crowd of Heartless, zipping to the left and right as torrents of a darker flame burned in his wake. It appeared as though he had already been there from before the entrance of the heroes, and had been fighting for quite some time. Mounds of Heartless flew into the air and disappeared into nothing with every successive dash he made.

The flame that erupted behind him was purple in color, similar to but not quite the shade of Dark Phoenix's hateful flame. He was but another weight on the steadily tipping scale of Order and Chaos. Garro's sharp eyes caught a glimpse of the warrior as he made a flying leap through a steadily rising wall of the writhing darkness towards Phoenix...

Garro: "Look, over there!"

...but more importantly, towards Shen, who approached Phoenix from the opposite direction and had reached her far before him. She took shelter beneath her barrier and kept close to Phoenix, who stayed frozen in terror at the scene that erupted around her. Doe fired again and again, blowing rank after rank of shadows from the barrier, which stood resolute under their assault.

The being was an advocate of Chaos, but unlike Dark Phoenix, he knew just how important the presence of Order was for them. With the need for a constant balance, an overabundance of Order meant only one thing: That it was time for Chaos to kick in.

The being skipped madly across waves of the monstrous creatures, which grew ever larger and more deadly as he approached the epicenter of the battle. Above Shen and Phoenix did Dracoon and Dark Phoenix float, locked in a life or death struggle for ultimate supremacy of the day. Rays of ever-intensifying light and darkness flew back and forth as buster and beam saber met with cold, enchanted steel.

Still did the being move, almost mindlessly towards his goal. Not as burly as he had once been, he was clad in loose brown leather, thin and frail with starvation and madness. His face was concealed almost completely, save for a black visor that covered his eyes. His eyes blinded by the glasses and his soul seeing all that lay around him, the man's goal was clear. He raged towards it, knowing that today was the final end to his torment. He would be one again.

Garro: "Someone's heading right towards them!"

Nameless: "It's okay, he's an ally. You need to get to the tower. We'll do the rest from here, get moving!"

The sudden appearance of the Nobody gave Grey and Garro little time to react as they were pushed aside by a strong wind that came from a single swing of Nameless' mighty hammer. Grey skidded backward and caught Garro by the hand, turning him towards Ark and the Tower. He extended his palm, and a burst of raw psychic energy blew a dozen black shadows backwards, dissipating them and clearing a path for Garro to get running.

Grey: "You heard him, go!"

Nameless: "You go too! This isn't your fight anymore. The only reason I'm even here is for one thing..."

Nameless turned towards the mystery man, whose brown-gloved fists glowed purple, crushing Heartless after Heartless in his desperate attempt to meet at the center of the struggle. He was hardly the burly man his moves made him out to be, but he fought like a monster unleashed, purple flames bursting from the ground around him and slicing through the ranks of the enemy like the blades of a saw.

Grey: "Out with it, then! Why are you keeping us from fighting Dark Phoenix?"

Nameless cast a sidelong glance at Grey, his clothes and hair whipped around by the winds that kept Grey from helping. Grey was enraged by his arrogance, but felt an increasing feeling of helplessness as the Nobody shouldered his hammer and turned away.

Nameless: "I'm going to help Faceless get his heart back."

He dashed off into the fray, each swing of his hammer knocking back another row of shadows, and each explosive strike covering him in inky darkness that slid ineffectually off of him. In this state, he was an invincible warrior, undaunted by the challenge that lay before him.

As the winds stopped their rampage and Grey was able to move again, he shook his head and turned to Garro's path as the warrior's cannon kept firing wide rays of white light that blew apart dozens of creatures at once. Ark had gone far ahead of them, but with Garro's widespread supporting fire, Grey was quickly able to catch up. His baseball bat glowed with a green light as he sliced with wide arcs of light through his foes, the weapon quickly revealing its true nature as more and more Heartless thirsted for his blood, and the destruction of their bane.

Grey (thinking): 'That cocky bastard had better know what he's dealing with...'

In the skies Dark Phoenix and Dracoon circled each other, trying to find an open point. Everytime one moved the other did too. Each strike cancled out. They were dead locked.

Dark Phoenix: "We can do this forever you know..."

Dark Phoenix laughed to himself.

Dark Phoenix: "Can you fight forever? You already almost did, doesn't this seem so familiar?"

Dracoon didn't respond, he only attacked.

Doe kept shooting, destroying the heartless easily. His/her gun seemed to be using the same bullet continously. Technology was such a blessing.

Doe: "Heartless..."

Doe kept shooting, and shooting...

Doe: "To think you over looked me..."

The heartless still overlooked Doe as if he/she didn't even exist, even though he/she was a very apparent threat.

Doe: "Does that mean I'm also a heartless?"

Shen saw Faceless and she tried to reach out to him, but something held her back. There was something about him that seemed so... comforting, but she couldn't quite touch it. Phoenix noticed this and tried to regain her composure, at least for Shen's sake.

Phoenix: "Shen... You can't worry about him now, he's helping us, stay strong..."

Shen listened to Phoenix, but the feeling was still at the edge of her mind. It wouldn't leave her. She reinforced the barrier against the heartless, but changed it so Faceless could freely enter if he wanted to. She began to feel something inside herself, something stirring...

Phoenix: "Shen... heehee... that's cute."

Phoenix somehow giggled, leaving Shen clueless.

Ark ripped through the heartless and entered the tower. A man was waiting on the base floor, multiple swords on his back.

Hero: "I know what you plan on doing."

Ark took a step forward, was this man the seal?

Hero: "I can't let you interact with the heart of the world."

Ark: "It's the only way to destroy the heartless!"

Hero: "And what will happen if you destroy the heartless!?"

Hero yelled as he took out two swords, holding on in each hand.

Hero: "We can't save any of them if you destroy them! They deserve better than that! Many heros died and many were consumed! We can still bring some of those people back!"

Ark: "You can't defeat the heartless on your own!"

Ark pointed his spear at Hero.

Ark: "Your ideas are noble and I know you care about the people, but you have to let go! If you want to save the planet you have to sacrifice those that are already heartless. Their spirits will still exists, it'll just take longer for them to return to their true power!"

Hero: "They won't be who they were! Their uniqueness will be destroyed!"

Ark jumped at Hero and Hero jumped at Ark. They collided in midair, Ark's spear ripped through Hero's shoulder and Hero's swords completely missing Ark.

Hero: "Dammit..."

Ark turned towards Hero who put both swords back and reached for another one. Darkness surronded the sword.

???: "Hero... You're still weakened from the seal, allow me to stop this man."

The voice echoed all around Ark before Origin appeared in front of him.

Ark: "You're a fool..."

Origin: "I won't let you destroy all the life that's close to completing the cycle."

Ark: "What would Phoenix say?"

Origin sighed as a massive amount of power began to build up in his body.

Origin: "I can't let you--"

Luke: "Jesus you two, get over yourselves."

Music floated into the room and Luke followed.

Luke: "Ark, go man. I'll take care of these two, all right?"

Ark: "I never thought we'd have to fight these two..."

Luke laughed, he was the only one in the room that wasn't practically a clone. Ark, Hero, Origin, they were all the same person in the end. Origin is nothing but a highly evolved Ark, Hero is just a very powerful Ark. Ark creating the world had lead to it's destruction.

Ark ran out of the room as a gate opened, to the heart of the world...

As Faceless fought his way to the center of the mass, a whisp of a memory came back to him, strengthening his resolve. He was getting closer, and now he could feel it in his thoughts, too....

---------------

Evan: "GRAAAAH!!!"

Evan's feet stomped into the ground as he charged like a bull at Kalar, who simply held out his steel fist, clasped Evan's forehead, and swung the beast of a man in a full circle before hurling him backwards and into an already half-destroyed building. A cloud of dust filled the air above the city's ruins, as Evan struggled to stall Kalar and make good Garro's promise... and Shen's escape.

Near the quickly failing warrior's collapse, no less than a score of Heartless swarmed around the dead body of a young man who made no sound as he died, his arms covered in wires and his expression one of mute terror. Evan panted as he struggled to his feet, for once beginning to feel the weight of his bulky mass. A trio of shadows jumped on him, and he pushed them away from him with an explosive wave of Chaos energy. The shard of the Master Emerald that glowed within his leather vest heated up for a moment, filling him with its power. He couldn't be finished yet, could he?

No...

Kalar: "Face it, you fool. You're nothing now. Not to me. Your precious Chaos power can't even touch me, and I'd like to think I've proven that several times over by now."

Evan: "Wh... why.... doesn't it work...?"

Evan's shoulders hung low as he doubled over in pain from the Chaos that surged through his body, disrupting the sights and sensations that his soul reached out desperately to grasp. His vision became a blurred conglomeration of shadows and purple fire, as both fought for supremacy around the two men.

Kalar walked solemnly forward, a pair of black wings extending behind him. He raised his scythe, which glowed blue with another man's power. The blue blade turned black, and its glow extended to engulf Kalar in shadows. He grinned his maddening grin, as his blue eyes turned yellow and hollow, the glow of the Heartless within them.

Kalar: "Recognize this? It's the power within his body..."

Evan circled around Kalar slowly, backing away from him as the demonic man transformed yet again. His wings grew larger, as though a bat had grown to epic proportions and sacrificed his arms for Kalar's benefit, and the tail that had grown from the base of his spine lengthened, thinned, and darkened to the color of the shadows around him. Even the fire at its tip had blackened, along with Kalar's blonde hair. The only part of him that remained pale was his skin, a monstrous contrast to the rapid changes that were occuring around it.

"...and it, too, is filled with the power of Chaos, much more than you."

Evan shook with fear, stumbling backwards as a great sense of foreboding and pure terror washed over him. It would end here, he knew. That man's body had withstood much more chaotic power than Evan's mind could ever comprehend. It only made sense that Evan's attacks were little more than a tickle to him.

"You see? This is it, this is your grand finale, the end you've sought all these years. You will fall to my blade like so many others have, and soon your friends will all serve to feed the swarm of hearts... It'll be glorious, and I'll be laughing all the while. Good job, Evan. You're such a hero... I'm sure Shen will be glad you fought so hard for her. I'll make a point of telling her how many pieces I cut you into!"

Kalar swung his scythe downward as he rushed at Evan, ready to bring his threat to fruition.

Evan's eyes widened as he thought of her. Shen... At least she'd fill his final moments. He couldn't help but recall their final exchange.

---------------

What had he said...? 'Get away from here. You don't deserve this fate...' Such big words from a big man. It was funny, how little they had meant to him in the end. What got him, though, was what she had said afterwards.

'Evan... I love you. Please...'

It had taken him by surprise, for sure. However, he could not decide which had surprised him more: that she had loved him, or that because of her love, she was actually begging him to not leave her, to not sacrifice himself for the greater good.

For a long time the two had traveled, seeking to find the ultimate truth of the soul together, and to change the world for the better with that truth. They had faced many trials, and together they were the ones responsible for the balance that was kept between Order and Chaos in the world's time of need.

Throughout it all, he had wanted to be the one to say it for so long... There it was, the opportunity lying in front of him. Shen had never asked him for anything a day in his time with her. And now, in a time of true need, in the world's darkest hours, he was unable to say it back, because admitting how strongly he felt for her would mean turning his back on the world and, in an even bigger way, turning his back on her.

The heart, he reflected as he walked away from her, furious tears on her gentle, delicate face, is a very fickle and disappointing thing at times. Shen turned her back to him, paused, and straightened. She pulled her straw hat from behind her back, low over her eyes, and walked.

Shen walked slowly, patiently, and steadily, as she always had.

A rainstorm began to rumble through the skies as Evan rushed to his death, knowing full well that the longer he fought Kalar for, the longer Shen had to get as far from him as possible, and the longer Garro had to prepare.

The heart was very disappointing sometimes, indeed.

---------------

Even Shen had failed to realize why Evan was there, or so he thought. Kalar's scythe drew ever closer, and time seemed to slow down as Evan came to a single, final realization of his purpose. In spite of her feelings, in spite of their conflict, in spite of their separation, her hatred of him because of his disregard for their safety... In spite of the frustration he felt at leaving her for this stupid mockery of a plan that they had all formed at the last minute, in spite of the sacrifices so many had made to bring them to this stage of the plan...

In spite of it all, Evan was there for her. He was fighting because he wanted her to live, and because he wanted to help her survive. And if he wanted to do that, to prove to Shen that he hadn't failed her...

Well, he'd just have to keep fighting.

The scythe's blade was suddenly stopped by a pair of enormous hands that had reached out and grasped it at the last moment. They held fast to the weapon as Kalar struggled to press it forward and into Evan's chest. As the two struggled, Evan's purple glow faded and changed to a soft, golden color. It was time he stopped seeing the world as one full of Order and Chaos, and began to reach out with his soul for real.

Evan threw the blade upward and lashed out with a clenched fist, striking Kalar in the face and blowing him backwards and down the road. Kalar's body flew backwards, and as he righted himself with his wings and rocketed forward to redouble his attack, Evan met the man's speed with his own, and the two clashed again and again.

Evan's fists launched themselves left and right, beating on Kalar with the fury that only a torn lover could have. His blows hit hard and fast, Soul energy exploding from every strike, and for a while it seemed like his passion was all that would drive him to victory.

But no, something felt wrong with it all... Kalar was just baiting him. Eventually, Evan understood. As he hit Kalar a final time, the warrior was thrown backwards into a telephone pole, and as it bent out of shape and he nonchalantly got to his feet, it became suddenly clear... Evan grew tired again, his stamina spent at last.

Evan: "You... you're not feeling this at all, are you?"

Kalar: "I'm not..."

He raised his scythe, and a loud wail erupted from it, reaching across time and space to deliver a splitting pain in Evan's head.

"...But Janus is. You just love to hurt your friends, don't you...?"

Evan: "No..."

The Heartless had done nothing but form a shell around Evan's attacks, and Kalar walked forward as the man's body grew weak. Shadows rose from the ground all around him and clawed and tore at his flesh as Kalar raised his scythe...

In seconds, the screams that had filled the air moments earlier had subsided, and Evan's massive body was gone... In its place lay a withered shell, barely large enough to let the clothes that had covered a once-proud bringer of balance to the world hang off of it.

As Kalar walked away, the rainstorm that had once rumbled instead grew loud, and droplets of clear water began to fall. They pounded the body of the being like a hail of small pebbles, and a red, glowing sphere rose from it and sailed off into the sky. As it rose out of view, Kalar turned to look at it for a moment, squinted his eyes in anger, and grunted as he pushed open the door to a massive cathedral.

A hundred miles away, amidst a forest every bit as stormy as the city, a petite young woman in a straw hat paused in the midst of her walking, sunk to her knees, and sobbed to herself, softly, painfully, and uncontrollably.

---------------

Faceless felt his goal approaching. He was blind, but the light from Shen's barrier came into his view, and he lashed out with a withered fist, launching a wave of Chaos energy into another dozen shadows. There, Phoenix and Shen stood within a sphere of pure Soul power. Heartless after Heartless launched themselves at the barrier and were burned to ashes upon contact, though it was becoming readily apparent that the barrier would not stand for much longer.

Still did Dracoon and Dark Phoenix struggle in the sky, their blows raining hell down upon the stricken land. It was tough to say who would give in first...

Faceless completely disregarded their struggle, and spied his ally approaching from the far side of the battle. The hammer was hurled through the air, and Faceless leapt up to grab it, knowing that there were a very select few people who lived that could hold it...

He grasped it tightly, and with a wave of his thin arms, he hurled the hammer at the ground as Nameless sped to retrieve it. The hammer slammed into the earth, and a massive quake erupted from below, throwing hundreds of Heartless off their feet and blowing even more into oblivion. The area was clear, and Nameless grabbed the hammer and began to spin as Faceless landed. A massive whirlwind surrounded Shen, Phoenix, Faceless, and Nameless, and kept the Heartless at bay much better than Shen's barrier.

Nameless: "Go! Now!"

Faceless nodded and made his final break.

Shen watched in awe as the two men kept an entire army at bay, and gasped as the unknown man hurled himself through the barrier and at her feet.

It was then that she knew, knew for sure just who he was. Tears filled her eyes for the first time in years...

His face, obscured by the leather cloak up until now, stared up at her as Faceless pulled back his hood, threw off his visor, rose to Shen's level, and brought his lips to hers. He picked her up off the ground and the two embraced in a passionate kiss as a golden light surrounded them both. There they held for several moments as the entire sphere of Soul energy began to expand outward, pausing for only a moment as Shen's body glowed a crimson color, and then exploding outwards, clearing the entire area around the tower of Heartless as a golden sphere incinerated wave after wave after wave of the creatures.

As Shen's body glowed red, a small sphere floated out of her back and into the air above her and Faceless, circling around them and resting inside of Faceless' body. He let go of her and set her gently on the ground before falling to his own knees and doubling over in devastation. The hood fell over his head as that same red light that had surrounded Shen faded from her and cast itself around him.

There was a blinding flash of light, and Nameless stopped his whirlwind to look at the scene. Their plan had worked perfectly.

When the light faded, there stood in all of his muscle-bound glory Evan's glowing body, radiating with waves of a mixture of golden and purple light, a true chaotic soul. His face once again covered by the leather hood and black visor, and his hulking mass a far better fit for his clothes than Faceless' ever was, he stared into the sky at Dracoon and Dark Phoenix's battle and then set his eyes upon Shen.

Evan: "I love you too. I'm so sorry..."

He stepped towards her and bent down to embrace her in his massive, loving arms. He smiled beneath his mask, a smile that only Shen had ever seen, that was only for her, and would always be.

"...I'm sorry I never said it before."

Doe's thoughts: "Is this what I was hired for, to kill those two men?"

Doe sighed. The heartless were all dead and his/her targets were both right in front of him/her. They were both powerful, but how powerful were they? Doe knew that all it took was one bullet to kill someone...

Phoenix's thoughts: "Good for you Shen... you've been sad for so long, I'm glad to see you happy again."

Phoenix turned away and headed towards Origin's Tower. She figured that she might still have some use left in her powerless form.

Shen openly cried against Evan, her eyes stopped glowing as emotions took control of her mind. Her soul seemed to collapse into herself as she couldn't stop. A mix between happiness and sadness filled her mind. Even a gunshot didn't seem to motivate her.

Doe: "Nameless... Faceless..."

The first shot was just a warning shot it seems.

Doe: "Nobodies that rejected Lexuk's offer, you aren't fit to exist in this world."

Doe took a step towards them, his/her aim locked on Evan.

Doe: "...however..."

Doe looked at Evan and Shen... apparently he/she wasn't that cruel.

Doe: "Lexuk hasn't made his appearence, so I doubt I'm getting paid."

The mercenary walked towards Origin's Tower.

Doe: "...and some closure would be nice."

Closure...

Is this all that is left?
A heart beat.
Such a sad sight.
A heart beat.
This world can't be saved.
A heart beat.
Still... It's my fault.
A heart beat.
So many powerful souls.
Nothing.
What will they say though?

Dracoon shot his buster canon at Dark Phoenix and watched as Dark Phoenix was blasted towards the tower. Dark Phoenix seemed to carry with the momentum and broke through the wall into the tower, Dracoon followed.

Luke: "You guys ready to give up?"

Luke was standing in the same place, both Origin and Hero looked like they had been thrashed quite a bit. Luke laughed as Origin still stood and Hero lazily rose to his feet.

Luke: "Geeze, too bad I can't just destroy you guys..."

Origin: "Fool... you're making a mistake!"

Hero: "Dammit Luke... You were the choosen one! You're supposed to protect this world, not lead it to its destruction!"

Luke: "Shut the hell up old man. You have no idea what I went through."

Luke's anger started to show as he played harsher notes. Another guitar started to play though and Luke couldn't believe his ears...

Guitarist: "Come on Luke, that's no way to treat them."

Luke looked over and it was like looking in a mirrior with inversed colors.

Luke: "Who the hell are you?"

The guitarist didn't reply as he quickly played a series of notes and the space around Origin and Hero began to radically distort.

Guitarist: "To bad these two can't be turned into heartless, but with the imbalance of the world, I'm sure it won't matter if we tilt it just a little more. What do you think Luke?"

Luke: "...Who the hell are you?"

A massive amount of energy began to surge around Origin, the guitarist smiled and Luke looked slightly worried. Luke played a single note and saw that the guitarist had twelve chains connected to him. Very unusual.

Luke: "You..."

The guitarist played notes harder and a surge of energy exploded, bring Origin's Tower down in the blink of an eye. Origin and Hero were no where to be seen. Dracoon and Dark Phoenix were both visible flying into a hole in space.

Phoenix: "Wha... What is this!?"

Doe: "Lexuk?"

The guitarist laughed as Luke stood astonished by the amount of energy he had unleashed.

Lexuk: "I see you failed me Doe, I ordered you to kill them. Did your human emotions get in the way? Well, I can take care of those..."

Luke: "What the hell? No you can't!"

Lexuk played a few notes on his guitar and a blast of air shot towards Doe who looked petrified. Luke got in the way and took the attack but didn't seem harmed.

Lexuk: "Come on Luke, we could make a good duo!"

Luke laughed, this was going to be fun.

Luke: "You know I can't allow that!"

Lexuk: "To bad... I didn't want to kill you, but well..."

Ark stood at the heart of the world. He felt depressed as the heart was practically pure black. He heard an eruption, two beings had just entered this sacred place.

Dark Phoenix: "What are you doing here!?"

Ark: "I plan to reset the world and everything in it."

Dracoon: "Is that the only way?"

Ark: "True life will never exist as long as a remnant of Dark Phoenix exists..."

Dark Phoenix: "I'm so close, you can't clense it now!"

Dark Phoenix flared his wings and the dark flames began to flood the space. It ripped down the void that the heart was in and Ark, Dark Phoenix, and Dracoon appeared with everyone.

Ark: "What are you thinking!?"

A blast of energy from Lexuk sent Ark crashing into the ground. Another sent Dark Phoenix into the air, but none were directed at Dracoon.

Lexuk: "Like fools to gold.

Dracoon was the closest to the heart, but all he did was look at Lexuk.

Ark's Thoughts: "Luke's nobody? What the hell... how are we supposed to deal with him? He can't interact with the heart though..."

Nameless: "Doe...?"

He shouldered his hammer. His work for the day was done. Far be it for him to deal with another mess of troubles...

"...Doe, I know you. It'd be worthless to fight you today, even if you wanted me dead. I can't die as it is, and you know it. Go to your allies... You've got bigger fish to fry now."

Nameless swung his hammer, and a cloud of dust kicked up in the winds around him, only to clear moments later.

He was gone. But the important thing to him now was that Evan was back, and Faceless was finally whole again. One mission was complete, and another lay before him.

---------------

Grey was furious. He and Garro ran towards the destroyed tower like madmen. If the heart of the world was destroyed, then everything Ark had called him here for was a lie! There was going to have to be a quick change in plans...

Grey: "Ark! ARK!!! I won't let you get away with this!!!"

However, Lexuk emerged just as Grey shouted his intentions, and the young man's eyes widened as he realized just how important such an opportunity had become.

"Wait, no! You! It was all you, wasn't it?"

He stopped short as Garro raced ahead, turning backwards to look quizzically at Grey. Lexuk simply grinned madly, and struck a single note on his guitar.

Lexuk: "Something like that!"

Grey: "Garro! Watch out!"

Garro looked forward, not realizing that that wasn't Luke standing in front of him at all... The sound wave from the note stopped him short, blowing him backwards and far past Grey. Grey scowled and jumped forward, drawing his baseball bat outward and causing it to glow a dull green color...

"Lexuk! I'll destroy you with the very bane of your kind's existence!"

He raised his weapon in midair to swing it down at Lexuk, who struck another note on his guitar and blew Grey back effortlessly. Thrown hard into the dirt, Grey scrambled to his feet, and surrounded himself with a green aura. The baseball bat shimmered for a moment, flashing silver for just an instant before returning to its original state.

"I.... just don't have all of its power yet..."

He rushed Lexuk again, this time bringing his empty hand forward and firing a jet of PK Fire out of his fingertips. Lexuk strummed a few low-pitched notes on his guitar and the jet of flame was diverted upwards and out of his way. He barely felt the heat. A cold wind swirled around them as Grey tried Freeze, nearing his final approach. Lexuk shook the cold off easily, and as Grey swung forward with his bat, the Nobody raised his guitar and parried the weapon like it was little more than the wooden club it seemed to be.

Grey swung left and right, and each time Lexuk simply gripped the neck of his guitar and blocked strike after strike. Finally, the dark guitarist got fed up with Grey's assault and took a step back, making Grey's next swing a complete whiff. He reared back, pulled back his guitar, and swung it forward, slamming Grey hard in the torso and knocking the psychic defender backwards several scores of feet. It was over. Lexuk was just too strong...

Lexuk: "You never will, you wuss. Stay down."

Evan: "Grand Viper!!!"

Evan's powerful burning uppercut failed to impress Lexuk, and in spite of the massive warrior's newfound power, his efforts were met with swift retaliation by Lexuk's guitar, which caught him in the midsection and threw him back at Shen before he could even swing his fist. Shen was frozen with fear as Evan got back up and tried again, only to be thrown back a second time. She'd just lose him again, wouldn't she...?

Lexuk: "And you, you dumb oaf. After all that trouble your Nobody went through to get your heart back, you really want to just throw it all away and try to destroy me? Like I said to the kid, stay---"

Garro: "DOWN!"

Evan threw himself flat and dragged Shen downward with him as an enormous blast from Garro's holy cannon blew a forty-foot crater in the earth around Lexuk. Chunks of earth slammed into Evan's back as he acted as a human shield to Shen, and Garro fired again and again, a pair of angel wings on his back giving him an aerial view of the action. The gods were rising again to witness the final conflict, and even as their waning fury rained down on Lexuk, he simply laughed and strummed a relaxing tune on his guitar, the notes surrounding him with peace and sanctuary. Finally, Garro stopped his assault.

Lexuk: ".....Well? Nothing? Nothing at all? Fine, fine..."

Lexuk straightened. It was showtime. He raised his arm and slung his guitar around his neck...

The arm fell, and Lexuk went into a loud solo of B-Flat minor chord progression, belting out line after line of furious music that altered and distorted the very threads of reality around the failing heroes. Garro's wings disappeared and he dropped to the ground. Evan lifted Shen up and dashed away with her as she shook in fear against his body. Even Grey had to clap his hands over his ears as he struggled to get a clear view of Lexuk through the sheer power of the sound. Finally, it was all over. He collapsed, blackness overtaking his consciousness. Evan fell, holding Shen close to him, and his mind was a complete blank. Garro hit the ground hard, and didn't get up.

Lexuk smiled, stopped playing, and walked back towards the ruined tower. He had work to do.

Luke: "Get the hell up guys..."

Luke played an inverse of Lexuk's music. Revitalizing everyone slowly. They were just inverses of each other, Lexuk laughed and turned around to look at Luke.

Lexuk: "They would've done better staying down, I doubt they even understand why I'm so much stronger than them. They don't even realize why they're here! Only me and you know the truth Luke!"

Lexuk shook with laughter and continued.

Lexuk: "They believe it was Dark Phoenix who brought the heartless into the world! They're so naive to believe to believe that a mere souless, heartless, mindless shadow of a diety could bring an entire world to ruin!"

Lexuk held a hand up and snapped his fingers. With that single snap everything became clear to everyone. Threads attached to his fingers were attached to everyone. The single thread that connected him and Luke burned constantly.

Lexuk: "Power didn't stop you from defeating me, fate did! You're all just the victims of fate, just like everyone else here besides Luke and Ark!"

The dark guitarist laughed madly, he just couldn't get enough of it.

Lexuk: "I've controlled you all from the begining! I'm the counter part to Luke, he might be able to destroy fate, but I can create it!"

Suddenly Lexuk's expression changed to a slightly displeased look.

Doe: "Why didn't you end our fates before we could've become a thorn in your side?"

Doe was the first of the beings controlled by fate to stand. He/she seemed almost curious.

Lexuk: "The difference between me and Luke is that I can create fate and he can destroy it. When our powers meet, we both gain a limited controls, you're all granted some freedom in your fates, but all together the end will be the same."

Lexuk turned around and started to step towards Dracoon.

Luke: "I'm guessing the other difference between us is that I'm not long winded, huh?"

Luke wasn't taking the situation seriously at all.

Luke: "You're a nobody, you don't have a heart, so what do you plan to do? Take this world's heart as your own?"

Lexuk was furious.

Lexuk: "You're just the same as me! You forsaked your heart and let your greed get the best of you!"

Luke: "Touchy..."

Ark managed to stand, Lexuk might not have controlled his fate, but the beast was still incredibly powerful. A showdown between Lexuk and Luke might end in a draw, but the chances of something being left afterwards was very small. Ark already knew that, so he figured Luke and Lexuk did too... The only way to save the planet was to get to the heart... but Ark could hardly take a step.

Dark Phoenix: "I... I was controlled...?"

Lexuk: "You're being controlled even as we speak."

Dark Phoenix: "... No... You can't do that... I won't let you control me! I'll spit in fates face!"

Dark Phoenix's power surged, all the darkness in the world gathered at the tips of his wings.

Luke: "Don't do it! That isn't going to work!"

Lexuk: "A creature bound by fate will only keep making mistakes if that's what I've written for him!"

Dark Phoenix's energy flooded into the heart of the world, Luke stared in disbelief and Lexuk laughed madly. Ark struggled to move towards the heart as darkness swelled inside of it. He fell to the ground knowing it was hopeless.

Luke: "I gave you a choice and this is what you do with it!?"

Lexuk: "All according to fate!"

Dracoon faced the heart. Countless thoughts flooded into his mind as he looked at the thread of fate that connected him to the heart. Did Lexuk write this one or is it natural fate? Was a machine bound by the same laws of fate as humans were?

Dracoon: "Who needs fate... I know what the right answer is."

Lexuk and Luke's attentions focused on Dracoon as the wings on his back shined brightly. Dracoon reached out and touched the heart of the world.

Lexuk: "This... wasn't supposed to happen..."

Luke: "It did happen!"

Lexuk: "The fate of this world hangs around Dracoon's shoulders... but... it was supposed to hang around Shen's... what could have possibly happened?"

Luke: "Choice..."

An explosive amount of power was released as the heart's energy flooded into Dracoon. The wings on his back lost the flame of their color as their radiance increased magnificently. The world, space itself, began to distort wildly as Dracoon's powers increased.

The powers of the world centered on Dracoon, entering him steadily, the glorious wings on his back shining with pure brilliance. The land directly under Dracoon shattered, and soon all the land did, leaving everyone in a void of nothing but bright stars that flowed into Dracoon. The heart was only half way absorbed into Dracoon.

Phoenix: "It's... not possible..."

Doe: "It's beautiful..."

Shen: "This power... it's going to destroy us if it keeps growing..."

Evan tried to move closer, but Shen latched onto him and held him back all she could. Luke looked at Evan like he was insane.

Evan: "Shen... I'm sorry I can't protect you."

Garro: "Is this the power of our world?"

Grey: "How can he contain it...?

Lexuk: "Dammit, he'll destroy everything!"

Lexuk tried to play on his guitar, but as soon as his hand moved, Luke rammed into him and they seemed to fall into a space/time distortion.

Ark: "Dammit... I can't do anything... we're all going to die."

The power began to erupt around Dracoon, slowly forming a sphere around him. The sphere seemed to remain stable.

Phoenix: "He's going to lose control... it'll destroy us all... Shen, Grey, can you two open a portal?"

Grey: "I wish I could, but the space around us is too distorted to figure out even where I could create one!"

Shen: "I can't focus my soul with that energy all around us!"

The sphere started to quiver slightly, showing that it was starting to become unstable.

Phoenix: "If only Ark was over here... he might be able to think of something..."

Then the sphere went completely unstable, Dracoon's figure seemed perfectly normal, but the sphere expanded and in the last second of everyones life, they saw all their dreams fade... and rise again when they found themselves to not be incenerated.

Phoenix: "STAR!?"

Star stood against the energy, his sword pressed against it and torrents of energy pouring from him to hold back the brilliant light.

Star: "We don't have much time..."

Star strained against the energy as he looked at Dracoon, who returned the looked.

Star: "...but I have something I want to ask..."

The energy surged again and Star strained himself more.

Star: "Grey, Garro... If you see Janus, tell him I'm won't be able to catch up with him..."

Star sighed as a tear rolled down his cheek.

Star: "...and more importantly... if you see my daughter and Nino... tell them I'm sorry for once again making the same mistake of fighting Dracoon instead of returning home..."

Phoenix: "Star..."

Gray energy surronded Star, it's paleness was magnified by the brilliant light all around them.

Star: "You will end up in different worlds, I have no idea where though..."

The energy swallowed the group entirely and they were gone, whisked away.

Star: "Mel... Nino... I let a rivaly consume me and the thoughts of you two brought me back... There will be no return for me... but I hope you can move on."

Star put down his sword and the magnificent energy consumed him instantly...

Shen's body felt heavy, she was exaughsted, she wanted to just lay there forever... She reached out slowly with her soul and she felt Evan's close by. Everything seemed like a dream she was waking up from... She knew Evan would stir eventually, but she just wanted to wait peacefully until then... She had no idea where she was, but she figured it couldn't be that bad with Evan so close to her.

Phoenix could hear the ocean... She laid on her back and looked into the sky, a peaceful expression on her face. Someone else was bound to be near her, but she couldn't bring herself to look. She silently hoped it was Ark, but she knew that Ark hadn't been with them when Star saved them.

She didn't believe for a second that Ark might be dead.

Doe had ended up alone. Just the way he/she liked it. She/he had make a quick trip to the local bar and started drinking. The tab was the last thing on Doe's mind.

Ark floated in the radience of Dracoon's power. He didn't know whether he was alive or if he was dead. He was relaxed though, it felt like a long journey had just come to an end. Another one, he felt like he could sleep forever, but he knew that he'd have to get up again and fix everything. It was Ark's fate... a fate that wasn't touchable by Lexuk or Luke, it was a fate Ark choose. He lived with his choice, hoping that one day, he'd find true peace...

Ark felt water rush over him and he felt that he was sinking and he dreamed...

Luke: "Fate is trying once again... Man... Why do I suck so much? I was going to end that quickly, but Lexuk? Geeze, how lame was that? This doesn't look like an ending... it looks like the begining of an even longer adventure. I hope I get a good part, something more important... I wouldn't mind being the hero you know? Well, I guess originally I was the hero, but I accidently destroyed the chain of fate linking me to that... Man was that stupid."

Luke sighed.

Luke: "I wonder where that bastard escaped too... He failed against Dracoon, but Kalar is still running around... Geeze..."

Luke was walking in a forest, the animals apparently had taken a liking to him. His mind wandered, to simplier times... To when he was happy.

Luke: "Well, I broke fate because I don't like to be forced into anything, but maybe it's time I try and be the hero by choice!"

Luke laughed as the animals followed him. Where ever the hell he was, he was going to make the best of it.

Nameless: "NO! No, no, no no no no NO NO NO!!!! AAAAARGH DAMMIT!"

He slammed his fist into the ground again and again and again as soon as he came to and realized just where he was. This....

"THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!!!"

This world... It definitely wasn't where he wanted to end up. He had to find him... Or else nothing would happen.

"Kalar, where did Kalar end up? Where the hell am I?"

He threw his head backwards and stared up into a peaceful blue sky. There was nothing around him to set him off, yet he felt a perfect balance between darkness and light. He was in the totally wrong place. He knew it in his bones.

"And furthermore, why did I not end up where I was supposed to...? Huh? And where..."

He reached behind him for Satchel... Only to realize that it, too, had disappeared. He felt around for Janus' soul. Nothing. Nowhere. Not even nearby.

"...Oh, god damn it all, this is not turning out to be a good day for Nameless."

---------------

Evan opened his eyes and adjusted his visor. Lying in front of him was a yellow straw hat...

He reached out and felt for Shen's hand. He found it within a few seconds and a couple of misguided swipes of his arm, and sighed with relief. It was warm, and so was she.

But what surprised Evan most was not that Shen was alive, or that the two of them were someplace that neither of them had seen before (as far as he knew), but that there was something very familiar in his other hand as he reached out to pick himself up off the ground.

It was a long handle for something, something very big that extended upwards and made a t-shape with the handle. He felt it. It felt boxy and hard, but when he prodded it, it softened and became nothing more than a simple duffel bag.

It
was a duffel bag. The absence of the handle in its softened state proved this. He opened the main pocket of the bag, and peered inside.

An immeasureable amount of artifacts, discs, foods, and what appeared to be small creatures with adorable glowing eyes stared back at him, and he cried out in surprise.

Evan: "Agh, Shen! Shen!!!"

He picked up the bag and was surprised to see that it felt as light as a feather. He turned towards Shen to show her what they had found, and suddenly realized that he was actually able to hold it. A mixture of fear and excitement washed over him, and he began to wonder just what this new development meant. Was he the new chosen one...? His soul was still in his body... And Janus' soul was still radiating from the bag.

So what could it have meant?

Shen: "Evan...? Your soul... And Janus'?"

Evan: "I don't know what it means, Shen... But whatever the case may be, we have the soul now. We have Satchel!"

And it was true: Within that bag, that hammer, that source of power was the phylactery of the Soul of the Undead Hero...

They knew where the mind was, and they knew where the soul was.

Now all they had to do was find the body and heart. Kalar...

---------------

Grey awoke amidst a sandstorm of epic proportions. It acted as a shield from the outside world, and he could feel no wind or sand in his face when he rose up. He was encased. Garro was nowhere to be found.

Grey: "Garro...? I..."

He felt familiar presences in this realm: A few seconds of realization later, and Grey discovered that he was, in fact, back in Kirbynite's world. A letter lay at his feet.

---------------

Dear Grey,
I do not know what you have accomplished, but I can only hope that it is for the better of our world. I left you this sandstorm to keep you safe while you rested.

Yours truly,
Johnathan.

P.S. You were gone for, I believe, around ten minutes. Fine work.

---------------

Grey closed the letter, smiled, and laughed to himself. It looked like his part in this tale was over.

When he looked back on it, he couldn't help but realize just how little he had done, and yet how much his presence had triggered. He thought for a moment of Garro, but concluded that the priest was most certainly able to take care of himself. If Grey had not died of this incident, it was even less likely that Garro had.

The sandstorm around him subsided, and Grey rose into the air to return to the Marble Gardens, having far less than a clue of just how much more of a role he still had left to fill...
