Ark drifted through the endless ocean that had been his home and way of transportation for so long. It seemed like an endless time now, drifting from one world to the next, going between realities, through the lives of many people. Sometimes he started life, sometimes he ended it. This time though he had a very different task ahead of him.

Ark *between coughs and gasps*: "This world! I know this world! Why has it turned into darkness!?"

Ark's voice echoed across the dark world. He was in a bay, looking towards a town that seemed to have been destroyed a long time ago. It was just a pile of ashes with a few old wooden houses half caved in. The bay's water was completely black, the earth looked like it had been salted, this world couldn't support any life.

Ark got out of the water slowly, his clothes dripping wet. As he stepped onto the land the area where he stepped bursted into life, changing the ground back to normal around him to normal. The ground seemed to spring to life in a path, leading towards the burned out houses.

Ark: "This world's heart has been stripped from it?"

Ark follows the path of freshly grown green grass and wanders into the town, and sees a woman kneeling, a small rift in reality being opened up. She turned to look at Ark only briefly, an odd hat hanging far down so it covered her eyes. Ark took another step and prepared his spear, this woman probably had her heart taken from her and was trying to create a portal to another world where they could do this again.

Voice: "Please, do not believe my heart has been taken. Outside of the two great dieties I'm the lone survivor of this world, the hearts of many have been taken to use as slaves."

The voice echoed in Ark's mind and he realized it was coming from the woman.

Woman's Voice: "Only the two men left in your image and bestowed with the power of your heart have been able to transcend the boundries of the mortal plain. The man now known as "Hero" has become the seal that keeps the brilliant hearts of others safe. The man now known as "Origin" watches over the seal, forever letting his powerful heart burn brightly... but I fear that their power won't be enough."

Ark walked towards the woman, still hearing her in his mind.

Woman's Voice: "My heart has been sapped of all it's strength and only the tiniest ray of my soul keeps me from turning into a heartless. Soon it will burn out and the heartless will have the power to manipulate the collective souls of the darkness. I've seen how our world will end, Origin will fall, his heart unable to be taken he will instead be killed. The seal will have no more protection and his body will be destroyed, his heart also beyond the reach of these heartless hordes. However with his seal broken, the heartless will have full control over this world and will take the powers they have gained."

He kept listening, wondering why this woman was talking to him.

Woman's Voice: "Your existance in our world has already brought some of the strength back into my heart. Your heart is truely one that has gone through the hardest trials and come out with true greatness. You have already cured some of the land just by walking on it... I can not stay here and you can not do this alone, so I'm trying to recruit some of the people that managed to flee our world before it was taken. I don't know if you can trust them, and I don't know if I can trust you, but I believe that if this world was created by you, you will be able to save it."

The portal the woman was working on suddenly grows enough so that she could get through with no problem.

Woman's Voice: "When they get here, tell them not to use this portal to try and get home, this will take me to Sol Tiau, where no one should follow me. They will come out of this portal soon I believe... so please just wait for a little while."

Ark waved good-bye as the woman stepped through the portal she created and disappeared. The world felt slightly darker without her... but all he could do was wait and hope that whoever she was calling got the message.

Johnathan: "So then... You will go alone?"

Grey: "I gotta. I know that this timeline's Kalar is still alive... If I can find him, maybe I can help him."

The two men stood before a portal of darkness, the same one they were hurled through the first time they fled their world. The desert that they had ended up in had become Johnathan's home over time, though Grey himself had remained nomadic, eventually taking up residence in the house of Kirbynite and later his own territory in the Marble Gardens. Adventures were hardly Johnathan's suit anymore. He left that to Grey and his friends.

Grey straightened his vest and glasses as Johnathan rifled through his coat's pockets for something. He reached a hand into his breast pocket and pulled out a small pyramid-shaped object. Barely the size of his palm, it radiated with what might be the last remnant of the power of Psi.

Johnathan: "Will you need this?"

Grey shook his head.

Grey: "No, you need it more than me. That thing is what'll save this world someday, and it's what will someday make you an influential force in it. If anything happens while I'm gone, that Psi Core will become essential to your safety -- and the safety of those you care about. This is a solo mission. I have to go by myself."

Johnathan nodded and withdrew the object. He then shook his head disapprovingly.

Johnathan: "But why you? Why must you go alone?"

Grey: "Simple. If I'm consumed by the darkness, I'll be able to offer them nothing, and those who have gotten to know me here will eventually forget about me. Besides..."

He held out his hand, and his baseball bat shimmered into existence with a dull flash.

"...I have this to keep me safe. You do not."

Johnathan nodded his assent.

Johnathan: "Yes, I see. If you survive, do you plan to return?"

Grey: "That depends on who I find on the other side. I can't wait any longer. She's held the portal open for too long already. If I end up coming back, you'll know very soon whether or not I do. Time passes differently in our worlds, remember?"

Johnathan: "I do. We can thank Janus and Star for that, unfortunately."

Grey: "It may not be so bad if I end up coming back mere seconds after I leave from your perspective."

Johnathan was silent, but obviously disbelieving.

"Don't worry about me. I'll see you again."

Grey strode forward and stepped through the portal. He was instantly consumed, and the portal radiated a surge of Soul energy before closing in on itself, locking Johnathan in that desert wasteland forever. He smiled wanly, and nodded.

Johnathan: "I know."

Johnathan turned his back and began the long trek back to his barren residence. It would be centuries until he had anything important to do, after all...

---------------

A portal, this one similar to the one Shen had opened, reappeared in front of Ark, and moments later Grey dropped down out of it before Ark, his appearance drastically changed.

His vest had grown into a thin, mid-length peacoat of black felt. Within it lay several pockets that housed the myriad of gadgets and toys he had employed in his life as a human on this twisted version of Earth. Beneath it he was suited in white, immaculate and orderly, with a pair of black dress shoes to accompany him. He felt slightly more weighted down by this additional clothing, but understood its necessity. His coat's sleeves had been cut off at the shoulders, leaving him looking somewhat uncanny with an oversized wifebeater around his torso, but enjoying the feel of his old clothes. He cast an eye to Ark and grinned.

Grey: "Hey there. S'been a long time."

He looked at Ark's feet, and again at his own. Indeed, with the coming of a pair of people whose hearts were strong and intact, the world seemed to be regrowing already. Grey laughed softly and drew out his bat.

"The Pasttime says to me that we've come back for a reason. Do you happen to know it?"

Ark: "No one else can hear it can they?"

Ark had his head held up, looking high into the sky. Plants, animals, sometimes even the wind, he could hear it all. Their voices whispering to him. Each blade of grass telling it's own story and what should happen.

Ark: "You know the hearts of this world have been taken, but the heart of the world still has a few shining rays... We'll have to confront the heartless of the strongest hearts and defeat them. In fact one has been watching me ever since I appeared here."

Ark took a single step onto the salty cracked earth and nothing bloomed. When he took the step a shadow rose from the ground, a truely horrific beast stood before Ark. What could only be assumed as hair stood wildly up from the rather large lion-like beast. Ark took a step back, not sure what the beast was capable of, and not really wanting to find out in all honesty. The grass spoke out against the beast.

Grass?: "You used to play here and enjoy yourself while laying on us! You used to have fun and used to be such a strong person! When terrible things happened to you you recovered and eventually became a good person through it all! Why is it that you have become such a beast Nijote!?"

Ark had no idea who Nijote was, but he assumed it must be someone strong if the grass remembered them. The beast seemed confused, it took a step forward and then a step back, not sure what to do.

Ark: "Hey, Grey, do you know anything about this person 'Nijote' something we can use against her maybe?"

Grey readied his weapon...

Grey: "I remember nothing more than what a stronger man once told me... The greatest effort possible is what she strove for. Therefore, her Heartless would more than likely expect nothing less."

He furthered his memories to nothing more than myths and legends from days long, long past.

"Her heart was supposed to be her biggest weakness. When there was something she truly cared for, she couldn't bring herself to destroy it. But without that, she's become for some reason so much stronger... A behemoth, to be sure. And yet, this is nothing more than her physical body, a representation of the pinnacle of human strength, agility, and beauty. Any advantage I'd have over her is moot in this form..."

Ark: "Well... this is going to suck, isn't it?"

The confused heartless took another step forward and lunged at Ark, bearing its teeth. Ark barely had time to react as the lion like beast went by him right towards Grey. Ark felt like everything was going in slow motion as he tried to move to save Grey from this beast who was bearing down on him.

Ark's thoughts: "That speed, how am I supposed to defeat this thing? It's faster than I am!"

Ark started to run after the beast, his head pounding, his only thought of intercepting the beast and saving this man he had never met before, but the beast stopped in front of the man, it's eyes locked on Grey merely a foot away. Ark stopped, not sure of what to do, but Grey was being told.

Shen's Voice: "Grey, I'm glad you made it and encounted Nijote's... current self. I have temporarily stopped her movements as her heart wishes. I currently have her soul energy tapped into and she wishes for you to destroy this beast and set her heart free. She will of course cease to exist in our world, but until you gain allies from the darkness, she is currently beyond your capabilities."

The heartless was within inches of Grey but seemed completely paralyzed. The beasts eyes intent on killing Grey.

Grey: "There's a reason why I have this weapon... Nijote, I'm sorry we couldn't do anything more for you."

He sighed. His psychic attacks would do nothing against this darkness. A woman like Nijote didn't deserve such a fate, to be sure. Why her heart fell in the first place Grey would never know, but what he did know was that it deserved to be free. He grasped his blade in both hands, and drew it back as the power of Light filled it.

Just, however, as he was about to execute her, the beast roared in agony; another assailant! It was thrown sideways by the fierce strike of a heavy, blunt object. There was a spark of light at the point of impact, and a large, hammer-like object could be seen ricocheting off of its massive body. It fell sideways, whimpering.

???: "Inversion!!!"

There was an explosion of light as the hammer flew back into the hands of an airborne being dressed in bulky street clothes of a red, black, and white scheme. While still in the skies of the dark world, it swung the hammer downward and ripped open a portal to the Void. Before sucking in anything beyond a few dust particles, it wavered and reversed itself, firing a ray of darkness at the recovering Heartless. The ray hurtled forward, concentrating itself on the behemoth creature's torso and spearing it through, killing it instantly. The being landed, and his face could be seen a bit more clearly. Grey balked at the sight of it. Could it be? No... This one would have to be his...

Grey: "You..."

Grey walked towards the being, who barely took time to catch his breath before turning to face Grey. He held the hammer tightly, prepared to strike. The hammer did not weigh him down in the slightest, in spite of its size and bulk.

???: "Me."

Grey reached out, holding his bat at his side. He felt nothing inside this man's heart. No feelings, no emotions, no love or hate. Just thought and will.

Grey: "You're a Nobody."

The being smirked.

???: "That's awfully impolite of you to say."

Grey: "You beat that beast with that particular weapon. Who are you?"

He stepped towards the Nobody, who turned away and began walking.

???: "Forget it. Don't ask stupid questions, you know who I am."

Grey: "Janus', right? Kalar took his body."

Grey stopped, and the Nobody stopped as well. He paused, and then continued walking.

???: "Good thinking. I'll be seeing you around, though. I just wanted to let you know I exist, and what better way than showing you that I'm powerful enough to beat your ass up and down the street? It seemed fitting, considering the world we live in. You live in. Lived in. Good day."

He began to make more distance between Ark and Grey, who had one more question to ask.

Grey: "Wait! What's your name?"

The being stopped once more, considered, and kept walking.

???: "I seem to have forgotten. Who knows! Maybe it doesn't matter."

He turned around and kept walking, this time backwards in the same direction he had been traveling in. The man then called back to Grey, his voice now almost barely audible in the rising winds of the wasteland.

"How's this? I'm Nameless. Literally! It's a pun, ha ha. Laugh. It'll do you good. Or so I hear. And keep walking! We could use a bit more green."

He turned, and in a few seconds was gone.

Ark's spear shined slightly as the heartless began to dissappaer, a light shined from the darkness and blinked twice before appearing in Ark's spear, casually blinking. Was this Nijiote's heart? This light?

Ark: "It seems you know him. Which means there is a heartless version of your friend?"

Ark paused, knowing his words weren't exactly sensitive. He was practically talking to a stranger, if only someone had been around that knew how to break this awkwardness.

Ark: "We'll save him. We'll bring him back and we'll bring them all back. I was here when this world began and I saw a lot coming from it, I won't let it simply fade into the darkness."

He began walking, his mind made up and then he stopped.

Ark: "Well... I guess we should revisit some of your old friends... but I have no idea where to go, this grass only knew about Nijiote. We need to spread life across the world again anyways, and in my experience the only way to do that is travel."

Grey closed his eyes and grimaced for a moment. He opened them again, a light gleaming from deep within.

Grey: "Garro. The last bastion of light against the darkness. Come."

Ark followed Grey patiently, trusting him.

Time passed and they reached the dead city of New York. Its giant buildings sheltering countless heartless who seemed to shy away from the two as they walked down desolate streets, filled only with dead cars.

Ark: "We've been walking for a while, is this guy going to show himself or are we going to have to rip every single one of these buildings up?"

Ark could feel a certain oddity in the streets, a taste of what was to come.

On the other side of the planet, a battle raged. A battle that had lasted almost a full year, but it was merely the elegy of another battle. A true fight between powers. The shadow skimmed the earth, its undefined shape moving at high speeds, its target looking wildly for it.

It broke the surface of the earth, a long black blade glancing off a brilliant silver beam of energy, crackling in response to the black blade. The shadow dived into the earth, being chased by a small blast of energy that upset the ground. The shadow circled around, ready to make another strike.

"Without a heart, that machine will never be able to defeat such a heartless. Power doesn't mean anything when you have no heart behind it... If that machine had paid attention to the people that tried to teach him, he wouldn't be in this position, and maybe things would be different."

A man walked slowly in the darkness of his heart. The chains of his memories and hate binding him to the darkness. He walked slowly even though he proved himself to be stronger than the darkness it still wouldn't let him go. Luke remembered it, the day his heart was taken was the day he got it back. There was no brave moment for him, he simply broke the rules again and took what he wanted.

An enforcer of the rules tried to stop him, his heartless he assumed. The power the heartless had was equal to Luke's power, vibrations strong enough to change reality. He had simply wanted it more, his heartless was obliterated and he was plunged into this hellish world of darkness. Each step he took his chains seemed to hold him back more.

Luke took another step, thinking about the only person he ever really trusted and what happened to her, Maya. Such a weak woman with such a strong heart, it always made him laugh. She had sacrificed herself to save Luke once, but he came back to save her, just to find out that she had been horribly poisoned. Maya asked Luke not to break reality to save her, but just to protect her, which he did, down till the heartless came after them both.

He saved her, she was in a safe place for now, but he had to stop the heartless, he couldn't just live peacefully without destroying the traitor who lead them into this world and right into the heart of it. Luke refused to just go quietly, running away was never something he liked to do.

Shen: "Luke, why don't you come regain yourself?"

Luke took another step, hearing Shen's voice talking to him like an equal was painful.

Luke: "I refuse to leave."

Shen: "So stubborn still Luke? You know that your power doesn't matter anymore, it's your heart, and your heart is elsewhere. Why do you think Dracoon has been fighting armies all this time but not making any progress? Do you think you can win from just raw power too?"

Luke: "No, I won't break the rules this time, I'll use my music, my true heart, this time."

Luke took another step and felt the breeze wash across his faith. His first step out of darkness in to long. The sun was blocked by a gray covering of the world, it seemed that someone had played a lullaby while Luke was returning.

Grey: "We won't be meeting Garro here. I saw him die by Kalar's blade."

Grey strode plaintively into Garro's former lair... This church was of allegiance to no god; Garro had formed it for all who simply wished to worship to come to.

"In a time of need, Garro was one of the few who had realized that the gods would willingly unite for the sake of the people. Even the violent and aggressive gods, who had no bread broken with other deities, were allowed within this church's hallowed walls. There was one rule: No worshippers were to argue or fight with others based on their beliefs."

Ark: "How could that be possible? Humans are nothing if not always in constant conflict with each other..."

Grey: "Garro preached tolerance above all else, and that rule had never been broken once until a fateful day, far in this world's past."

Grey came to a stop in the exact middle of the church, designed after a modern Christian layout of pews and an altar, and looked to the great stone planet that hung graciously before them.

Ark: "I see... Continue, if you will."

Grey: "Garro himself believed in the planet: It was she who had spawned the gods, not the other way around. She had spawned life, and life had in turn created sentience, which begat faith. Faith was Garro's power: It was from this place, this gathering roundtable discussion of the gods, that he drew his strength. I'll tell you a story..."

---------------

It was late. Garro sighed wearily as he tried again. 'One more time,' he told himself, 'It has to work this time.'

He would be the one to refill this quickly darkening world with light. He knew that in a time of need, the gods would call upon him as a savior, and that he could purge the world of the evil that slowly set itself upon its surface. It was his role as an avatar of faith. It was only a matter of time, when he had to call, and when they would answer. Perhaps the world's darkest hour was to come before...

It was pretty dark already.

Garro knelt at his altar, his knees sinking into the crimson shag carpet that lined the floorways. The wood felt hard beneath the carpet as Garro placed his hands on the altar that stood before him. His church had grown decrepit as the world turned to ruin. No man wanted to worship, and the church had fallen into disrepair, holes in the roof and walls abound. The huge stone earth that he had erected as its main monument glowed white the moment he lay his hands down, and he exhaled, clearing his mind to summon the power of the gods themselves...

Kalar: "Awfully late for a man of the cloth to be awake, wouldn't you say?"

Garro froze, his heart filling with a fear that he knew all too well nowadays. Was now the time?

Garro: "Kalar. I'm surprised you had the gall to come here, after all you've done."

He rose to his feet and felt inside of his long coat, now a ceremonal white color instead of the typical brown. Both of his pistols were inside, and from their weight he determined that they were both indeed fully loaded. He swallowed in terror.

Kalar: "I've done very little by myself, old friend. Everything in this world is being consumed by darkness. People are bringing themselves over the edge. Fear, hatred, anger, depression... It's all spiraling into nothingness. I've got little of a hand in it."

It was true: Garro was afraid. This was the first time he had ever truly felt fear, a fear for his own life like no other. Before this madness had engulfed their world, before the coming of the darkness and the consuming Heartless, Garro had always had his allies by his side to keep him safe. He was by no means a weak man; he played as much the role of a savior as the saved. Now, he felt his greatest ally and his closest friend standing not one hundred feet behind him, blade drawn and killer instinct alive and well.

Garro pulled a pistol from his coat, whirled around, and pointed it at the being that had appeared in the doorway to his sacred home. He gasped in surprise. The man who stood before him was his friend no longer, warped and changed by the relinquishment of his own will to the shadows. His pistol shook in his trembling hand as Garro looked over his former fellow.

The black suit he had grown so familiar with had been completely mended from its tattered form. The blonde hair Garro had seen through so many adventures and battles had grown black with hatred and dark might. His eyes passed over Kalar's body, observing the changes in his stance and posture.

Kalar had become more demonic and draconic in nature as the result of his ability to integrate differing energies into himself. His skin was a dull rust color, no longer the pale white that it had once been. He had a tail, a long, thin spinal extension that could thrash about and impale errant foes. His eyes glowed a bright yellow, rounded and eerie like the Heartless he could control. There was no turning back for him at this point. It was obvious that he had become completely consumed by darkness.he was a more upright man now, supported by the pair of black wings that had sprouted from his back. They were little more than leathery flaps that extended from drooping, bony extensions of his shoulder blades, but Garro knew firsthand that they were capable of propelling Kalar at speeds greater even than Garro's own aerial mobility. The once-familiar scythe that constantly lay on Kalar's back rested in his hands now, the curved blade straightened and thickened, a result of its melding with the Nightmare. Yet more did the weapon change since last seen: The blade now glowed with a blue hue, a familiar soul radiating from it, as though it had been absorbed and integrated into Kalar's being, much like everything else the dark warrior observed.

The energy of that spirit and soul... The near-transparent blade had become opague with it. Garro instantly knew who it was that inhabited that blade.

Garro: "Little of a hand... How dare you. That blade has His soul in it, does it not?"

Kalar grinned a fanged, monstrous grin. He shook his head, and held the weapon out before Garro. The very motion it made caused the air around it to ripple...

Kalar: "No... You and I both know that that is impossible. I will say this, though. He was consumed. Those who are consumed serve only to feed my power. Think what you will of that. If only his sacrifice had not been in vain... I did not see her die, but death or not she is exiled from this realm forever. A shame, too. That Guardian Soul of hers would have been delicious."

Garro: "Bastard!"

Tears in his eyes, Garro dashed forward at Kalar, firing blast after holy blast from his pistols, all of which were easily deflected by a quick whirl of the scythe's blue blade. As Garro neared, Kalar swung mightily, bringing the weapon down on Garro. The priest raised a pistol upward in defense, its blessed metal catching the crook of the scythe only inches from where it'd have made a fatal gash. He could feel Kalar's raw strength overpowering him as he held fast, ducking out of the way of Kalar's withdrawal.

Garro spied a shine beneath the right arm sleeve of Kalar's suit: the metal arm and leg that Kalar sported had clearly gone unchanged. However, he also knew that...

Kalar: "Ha!"

Kalar swung forward, firing his metal hand like a piston at Garro, who lay prone on the ground after rolling away from his initial attack. Garro pushed himself up and out of the way mere milleseconds before Kalar struck the ground where he lay. Leaping backwards, Garro pulled out his second pistol. A spray of six shooter bullets flew out of his coat pocket as he swung his empty revolver open and caught the bullets inside its chamber, a testament to his gunslinging expertise. He landed on a row of pews neatly, and perched there in wait for Kalar's response.

Kalar did nothing more than grin the same grin he had been grinning and flew forward at inhuman speed, drawing his scythe back for another strike. A swing and a miss later, Garro was airborne, a pair of gossamer angelic wings supporting him. There was no time for words anymore. He went full akimbo, firing both pistols rapidly and unleashing a dozen blasts before reloading and waiting for a better position to attack from. In the air, he had more options than he did on the ground, but he had to contend with Kalar's speed as well as his own tactical prowess.

Kalar let out a yell and a wave of darkness flew outward from his body, dispelling the blasts as easily as he had blocked them. He flew at Garro again, swinging his scythe over and over again, each time a narrow miss but growing hairs closer to that sweet death that he had longed to deliver.

Garro could not help but wonder how things had gotten to be like this... As he parried and deflected shot after shot from Garro's guns, did not Kalar wonder the same thing?

No... The darkness directed his thoughts now. He was a being of pure evil, and Garro knew full well that Kalar was doing nothing more than playing with him. Kalar could have killed him ten times over, and yet he stayed, continuing to play. Perhaps it was because he had all the time in the world on his hands. Or was it perhaps that he was hoping somehow that he would not have to kill his best friend? Garro held onto that thought in his mind. It was what drove him, to know that maybe somewhere down inside of the darkness and consumption, struggling for dominance with the shadows was still a Kalar that was capable of being a friend and ally. A Kalar that was still capable of loving.

As Garro raised his pistol to fire again, this time at point-blank range with Kalar, his gun was swept aside in a flash by the haft of Kalar's scythe. Garro's eyes widened. Kalar swung forward, not giving Garro an inch to recover.

Slice! The scythe's blade buried itself in his chest. Garro choked, feeling his own blood rise in his throat, and looked down to see himself hanging in the air from Kalar's blade. His legs dangled as his vision blurred and his wings disappeared in a cloud of ethereal feathers. The scythe had impaled him completely, starting from the ribs on his right side and coming out completely through the left. He could feel it pierce through his heart and lungs, hot and searing. Through it all, though, Garro felt no pain, only the heat of the blade. Had his spine been sliced, as well? He looked forward to Kalar...

Garro: "You... killed me...?"

His words were little more than a gurgle of blood. The friend he knew was gone. His white coat stained with red as blood blended with cotton and polyester, starting as a small spot that grew around the penetrating blade. Finally, Kalar whipped the scythe towards himself and ripped through Garro's flesh, nearly separating him in two as the priest fell towards the floor of the church. He hit the ground with a dull thud, and a pool of blood grew from behind his back.

Garro's thoughts blended together, and he couldn't help but wonder if his gods had failed him...

Kalar: "Not quite yet..."

Garro couldn't move, but he could feel life draining from him. The demon man that stood before him was naught but a shadow of what it once was in his eyes...

"I prefer a twinge of irony to my deaths. Janus, once devoted to living free, now condemned to lay within my blade. And you, old friend..."

He reached for one of Garro's pistols, which had fallen from his hand at the strike of Kalar's scythe. It too lay bathed in blood, as the pool that leaked from Garro's body extended further and further.

"...Shall die by the very thing you swore your life to."

Garro: "You're... not Kalar..."

Kalar reached into Garro's torn coat and rummaged among the bloody pockets for a single bullet. He loaded it into the empty chamber of Garro's gun, and cocked it.

Kalar: "That's all in how you perceive it. I look like him, act like him, sound like him, dress like him. Am I not him?"

Garro: "Kalar wouldn't..."

Kalar pointed the pistol directly at Garro's head, pressing its barrel against his sweating brow. He drew his face close to Garro's...

Kalar: "Oh yes. I would."

Kalar fired. A few moments later, he calmly stood up, placed the pistol in the breast pocket of his suit, and walked out of the church. A rainstorm had started up, washing away the blood from his suit and flooding through the roof of the cathedral. It, too, washed away the blood of Garro, the fallen priest. The body, however, remained to be seen.

---------------

Grey: "...I still don't know exactly what happened to him. Only that this place is now no longer the sanctuary it once was. Still the wonder of it all! That this statue would still be standing after all this time. There's another interesting fact that I feel is worth mention..."

Ark: "Hm?"

Grey paced back and forth throughout the cathedral's aisles.

Grey: "Garro was never consumed by the Heartless. It seems as though his body, and therefore his heart, disappeared entirely from this place. Perhaps that was the humanity in Kalar. He wished only that his best friend not suffer the same fate as him. I wonder then, if there is hope for him... If he is still alive."

Ark: "Interesting... A man who prayed to the Gods and was confronted by the devil himself."

Ark thought about the story, another man who had been touched by his actions of creation. His thoughts were interupted as a soothing warmth filled the church, his mind and body were at rest for a brief moment as the warmth continued to strengthen his weary mind.

Phoenix: "Grey? How have you been!"

The voice didn't seem to exist in reality, but spoke through the warmth, Ark turned to look at a rather bright ball of fire that was slowly changing it's form into that of a woman. Wings shot from the woman's back even as she seemed to still glow from the fire.

Grey: "As well as can be expected in this situation."

Phoenix: "I thought I noticed some life returning to the world, but I didn't imagine that you'd be back."

Ark could feel that this strange woman was up to something, not in any form evil, but she was hiding something. He couldn't quite pin it down, but he knew that it was something serious.

Phoenix: "Ark, I'm glad to see you're back to save our world again."

Ark: "Have we met?"

Phoenix: "Yes, in one way or another. It's a long story, but I'm the first ray of life that you created."

Ark almost fell over. The memory of a small dying flower just strong enough to speak to him flashed in his mind. His presence had given it strength, more so than he would ever know, and it had become nothing less than a diety.

Ark: "So can you explain what happened a little more in detail? With Grey's story I think I have an idea of who may be responsible, but--"

Phoenix: "No, Kalar is not responsible for the heartless. In the end he is just a tool."

Grey: "Than who was it that lead the heartless into our world!?"

Phoenix sighed, this story wasn't going to be a pleasent one for her to relive. Fire danced on one of the pews, changing colors to a deep black.

Dark Phoenix: "Interesting, a being of pure darkness. A being that lacks a heart, a soul, and any warmth... a being like me."

Dark Phoenix looked out at the world from his quaters deep under Origin's Tower. He could see everything from there and he hated everything. His eyes scoured the land, looking for more of these beings of darkness. Only one had been able to enter the world, someone was doing a very good job.

Dark Phoenix: "I wonder who is the closest to the darkness? Kalar is it?"

Dark Phoenix began to laugh wildly as he touched Kalar's mind, tainting his mind to allow the darkness in when the time came. Dark Phoenix ripped a hole in the wall between worlds, allowed the heartless to pour in. He continued to laugh in his own insanity, allowing the heartless to feed off his darkness.

Phoenix: "By the time I found out it was to late. Origin and I were prisoners in the tower, madly fighting to stop the heartless from escaping, but they managed to somehow. After Kalar was taken, he forced himself against Nijote and drove her crazy, feeding her doubts and insecurities... After she was taken other's didn't stand much of a chance."

Ark: "Why would Dark Phoenix do that though!?"

Ark practically screamed out, obviously very mad.

Grey: "It has made him more powerful hasn't it?"

Phoenix nodded solemnly. She was just a wisp and he was the strongest being on the planet.

Phoenix: "Star was quite the wild card, we still have no idea how his heart was taken, or why Dracoon still fights so strongly against his heartless."

There was an awkward pause.

Phoenix: "I... am unable to help you anymore than to explain what has happened. There are still details I'm not sure about, but I believe over time you'll come to learn these things. I've seen the direction our world is taking and..."

Phoenix got on her knees, head down looking to the ground.

Phoenix: "I can only wish that you'll help save the world. Ark, Grey, please..."

Ark: "Oh stand up! I decided I'd save the world after the first step I took onto the land, but you still haven't told us why you're here."

Phoenix: "... I can bring back Garro... He was the last person to die on this world and so I can use my power to bring him back... but I need to know if that's what you want me to do..."

Ark was silent as he looked at Grey.

COMP: "Dracoon. New life forms detected. One known as 'Grey'."

Dracoon parried another lunging strike from the shadow and started to move away from it, trying to gather himself for a second.

Dracoon: "What? Someone is still alive?"

COMP: "Entry reads: Grey, close friend of Janus, power rating low, intelligence rating unknown, skill rating unknown. It seems you don't know much about this man."

Dracoon: "Janus...? Read the entry for Janus."

Dracoon kept moving as the shadow skimmed along the ground, acting like a shark hunting it's prey. It was met with a wild chase though as Dracoon suddenly stopped and lunged backwards.

COMP: "Entry reads: Janus, a mysterious man of great power. Has had many run ins with Schwa, Star, and yourself. Power rating high, intelligence rating high, skill raiting high. Attacks learned from Janus are 'Hammer Whirl Wind' and 'Brilliant Modification'."

Dracoon: "Read the entry for Schwa."

Dracoon saw the shadow surface into reality and rush upwards at him, maybe Dracoon had been the first to make a mistake by being distracted.

COMP: "Entry reads: Schwa, a highly skilled psi warrior known to be a great man. His powers are still a mystery and his exact strength can never be determined, but his threat level is relatively low. Schwa disappeared, along with many other psi warriors, before the heartless came into our world. His disappearence in a mystery. Attacks learned from Schwa are 'Alpha Psi Beam'."

Dracoon: "That's it!"

Dracoon seemed to freeze in midair as he glew a brilliant white.

Dracoon: "Brilliant Modification!!!"

Dracoon was now a flare of pure white light.

Dracoon: "Hammer Whirlwind and Alpha Psi Beam (Echo Effect)!"

Star's heartless kept charging as Dracoon went into a wild spin, his beam sword turning into a hammer with a head of pure psi energy.

Dracoon: "Alpha Cyclone!!!(Echo Effect)"

The shadow ran right into the attack and was ripped into the cyclone instantly. As the cyclone died down only Dracoon was left with a voice echoing around.

Shadow Blade: "How did you get that power? How could you defeat me without a heart?"

Dracoon: "I've always had this power, ever since I met my friends. I've had this power ever since my friends gave me my heart."

Dracoon began walking, knowing that he had taken a big step today.

Grey: "...."

Bring Garro back? Certainly, he'd be a boon, but it was likely that he'd be hurt or die again, if the case became one of him advancing to the front lines in their struggle. Grey had a serious problem with helping those particular people unless it was an absolutely dire situation, as well. The world had already ended, so the situation was hardly dire, simply a daunting task.

Grey: "If we bring him back, what will become of his body? Will he know of the events that have transpired?"

Phoenix nodded. The spirits watched the worlds, even as the worlds themselves were destroyed. The heart of Garro was within Hero's seal, and since he was closest to the world when it died, Garro was the most likely candidate for a clean resurrection. His rebirth would be easy, his body pristine. His power, however...

Phoenix: "Yes, he will know of everything that has happened. However, he will not be the same person you once knew in many different ways. The old gods are long gone, and the few that remain are lesser in power than ever, without the faith of the strong-hearted to keep them preserved. He will be able to invoke their names in only the weakest sense... It is like a muscle that has atrophied. In time, his faith alone will sustain them, but for the moment he is held fast."

Grey: "So what you're saying is we have to keep him safe until he's strong enough to help us again."

Ark stepped forward for an interposition.

Ark: "If I may, it is not uncommon for the recently resurrected to succumb to a weakened state for a period. He will likely be in such a state for only a short time."

Grey considered... It was a good idea. They would need as much help as they could get, for sure.

Grey: "Fine. Let's do it. But I want you to make sure he wants to come back, first."

Shen: "I've taken care of that step for you."

Shen's voice whafted through Phoenix's warmth to reach Grey's ears. Ark and Phoenix also heard it too. Phoenix nodded slowly, trying to reach out to Shen just a moment before. Her mind now on the task at hand, bringing back Garro.

Ark: "Grey, you should enjoy watching this, it's quite a rare sight."

Garro: "You've witnessed this before?"

Ark: "Every time I wake up."

Phoenix closed her eyes as the warmth in the room increased, bringing in a breath taking smell of potpourri. Her wings began to flare up, burning brightly. Phoenix gasped suddenly and everything seemed to flicker. Ark moved outside smoothly as if he was expecting this. The warmth and smell in the room began to grow stronger as Phoenix began to turn back into a creature of pure fire. Fire began to circle in the air in front of Grey, making obscure patterns.

Phoenix: "Garro. . ."

As soon as Phoenix said Garro's name everything plunged into an azure darkness. Much like being deep under the water, but now there were three people in the room instead of two. As the light slowly reappeared, Garro's shadowed form took shape and when the light was back to normal, Garro stood in front of Grey, slightly surprised by the whole ordeal.

Ark calmly walked out of the church to stare at Phoenix's other side. Darkness gathered around him and the heartless fed off of him. An army of heartless followed his every move, waiting any command he would give.

Dark Phoenix: "Do you believe you can protect that whore? Do you honestly believe you have enough power to stop me from destroying that bitch?"

The two stared death at each other as they both reached for their spear.

???: "What do you think you're doing!? You can't fight that monster!"

Dark Phoenix: "Oh? The spoony bard has made his return?"

Luke responded by a quick series of random notes on his guitar. Ark didn't hear what was played, he just noticed Dark Phoenix and rest of the heartless cringe. Ark looked Luke over, this man was certainly in bad condition, bloodied, battered, and very tired looking.

Dark Phoenix: "You're just my play thing you poor excuse for a musician. Your lover ran from you because my actions and I had you trapped in the darkness, what do you think you can do this time?"

Ark grabbed Luke by the shoulder and shoved him back into the church before he could act.

Ark: "We'll rendezvous at a later time D.P."

Dark Phoenix: "Never call me 'D.P.'!"

Ark laughed, such a fickle diety to get caught up over names.

Dark Phoenix: "We'll finish this now!"

Dark Phoenix lunged at Ark who took a step forward and grabbed Dark Phoenix's spear, everything seemed to stop.

Dark Phoenix: "How!? This is impossible you cretin!"

Ark: "Want to back off for a bit?"

Dark Phoenix was in a full blown rage by this point, he tried to force his spear out of Ark's hand, but it wasn't working. With nothing short of a huff, Dark Phoenix vanished with his army of heartless.

Garro: "What...?"

Grey: "Welcome back."

Garro stared at himself in amazement, feeling along the sides of his body where Kalar had pierced him with the scythe. He was completely healed; No cuts, lacerations, impalements, scars, bruises, not so much as a skinned knee. It was as if he had been reincarnated into a brand new body. He remembered everything, too...

Garro: "I... I died."

Grey: "Yes, you did. You're alive again. Phoenix was nice enough to revive you, since you were one of the last powerful humans to die in the overrun. Please try to come to terms with it relatively quickly, we don't have much time and you're all the help we can get at the moment."

Garro: "O....kay."

He looked to the left and the right, and took a deep breath. He had just noticed that this was the first time he found himself breathing in what must have been years. The air dizzied his head as he came to grips with life manifest, and he blinked several times before realizing that yes, he was indeed able to see, hear, and smell the world around him. He took a few wary steps forward, and waved his arms as he did. He was able to move. It was like riding a bike: You never really forgot how to. But there was something missing... a presence he had felt since childhood, now completely gone from within him. Curious, he drew a sigil in the air, one of Sehanine, the goddess of the Moon. To any observer, it would look like he was pointing to various patterns of nonexistent stars across the blank skies. Ark leaned over to Grey and spoke quietly...

Ark: "What, precisely, is he doing?"

Grey: "He's drawing a sigil in the air, a symbol of one of the gods he communes with. I think he's just realized that the presence of the gods has vastly waned."

Garro's gloves left behind a trail of sparks, but nothing more. He grimaced.

Garro: "The gods... They're all gone, aren't they?"

Ark: "Not all of them. Many of them, but not all. I believe it may be up to you to find out which ones still support this shattered world."

Garro: "That's... None of them would. If everything that has transpired is true, and all of the world's population has been razed, then no man or woman would be alive for the gods to draw faith from. I'd have to call them back myself."

Ark: "Then call them you will. Unfortunately, you will have to do it on our time..."

Garro: "I see."

He placed his hands inside his coat's pockets, stroked the short fuzz of facial hair that adorned his chin and cheeks, and considered.

"Grey."

Grey: "Hm?"

Garro: "Before the end, there was military action against the Heartless. Naturally, they were destroyed, but the site of one of the battles in particular was not far from this city. Can you take me to it? I need to look for something."

Grey: "I suppose..."

Phoenix: "I wish I could join-"

Luke: "Wait, you're leaving!? Coward!"

Phoenix: "... but I'm about to lose all my powers as Dark Phoenix ends the consumption of the world and I'll be nothing but a burden to you."

There was an awkward pause as Phoenix looked at Luke.

Phoenix: "This... rebel isn't my choice of company either..."

Phoenix turned around and walked into the alter, disappearing, her warmth lingering in the air.

Ark: "I guess we should go then, no use staying around here. I'm interested in what you're planning anyways Garro."

Luke: "Man, isn't it obvious? Battle ground, god of war, come on!"

Ark ignored Luke, his obvious arrogance was starting to get on his nerves, and they'd only met a few minutes ago.

Garro: "Hardly, though I appreciate the idea. Grey, if you will?"

Grey nodded and placed his hands together, opening up a portal through space. It stretched to about forty miles outside of the city, where a ravaged wasteland of suburban ruins showed the skeletons of tanks and men alike, bleached white in the dry climes. Garro stepped through, and was soon followed by Grey and the rest of the group. He surveyed the area and immediately saw precisely what he was looking for.

Garro pulled out his single pistol and grimaced, picking a rusted sidearm off of the body of a dead militant. He brushed at it with his gloves, and checked it to see if time was its only damage. So far, so good. He continued sifting through the wreckage of the battle, stopping here and there to root around inside of the disintegrated remains of tanks, hummers, and the occasional crashed fighter jet. Soon, he had amassed a strage cacaphony of equipment; A long barrel, ripped from the front of an antitank rifle. He had grabbed several hand grenades, an old machete, the firing mechanism from a SAM set, and various repair and maintenance tools from across the field. None of them seemed in any way related to each other... Grey raised an eyebrow.

Grey: "Garro, if you're not here to invoke the god of war, precisely what are you searching for?"

Garro smiles and showed off his lone pistol, the other having been taken by Kalar. Without it, he'd be unable to draw anything more than a single-hand sigil in the air, making his already limited ability to invoke holy power even further reduced. The look on his face did more than imply that it wouldn't be enough.

Garro: "Upgrades."

Luke: "Guns? Man you're~"

Ark: "You're kind of loud."

Luke sighed, being cut off by Ark wasn't exactly fun.

Luke: "Hey, I'll take you out man, if you don't treat me with some~"

Ark: "Didn't you get turned into a heartless at one point?"

Luke: "How the hell did you know!?"

Ark didn't say anything, but just watched Garro patiently.

Ark: "If you're stuck to normal weapons, perhaps we should try to find other allies? This world is being revived by our presence, but until we start destroying the heartless, it will just be reversed."

Ark paused, thinking.

Ark: "Is there any other powerful~"

Shen: "There is still one person."

Ark: "Listening from above again?"

Ark didn't seem surprised.

Shen: "No, I'm back, I've recovered."

The blind woman walked peacefully in the battle field, her aura visible in the gloom of the world.

Shen: "I was able to detect a soul that has managed to survive in this world. He... or she has been living with a group of semi-heartless."

Grey: "Semi-heartless?"

Shen: "People who embrace the darkness, but aren't controlled by it. This person has seemed to escape the heartless' sight somehow. I don't really know much about the person, even after seeing their soul I don't even know this person's gender. All I know is the name, Doe."

Grey: "I remember, now... Kalar once remarked to me about them. He said he felt a kinship with them upon researching the psychological effects of the darkness on peoples' minds."

Grey closed his eyes. Mental disorders weren't his strong suit anymore.

"It was a condition that several people were afflicted with, whereupon their minds were able to perceive emotions, but not necessarily be affected by them. As the mind is a gateway to the heart, there was naturally no way for anger, depression, hatred, any of those feelings to sink in and allow the darkness to take root."

Luke crossed his arms in defiance at this, and rolled his eyes.

Luke: "That's bull! It's easy for people to say they don't have emotions."

Grey: "Easy to say, not to do. Everyone is affected in some small way by something. These semi-heartless are people who are already born without hearts, in a sense. The physical heart is there, but the spirit... For a time, I thought Nijote was one of them, which was why I was so surprised to see her Heartless attack us."

He looked back to where he and Ark had come from. In any case, Nijote was free now...

"The semis are among the strongest allies and most fearsome enemies we have. They walk with the darkness as a friend, and though it does not influence them, this can in large part be because their beliefs are already in line with the dark doctrines. To consume, to destroy, to be ever-hungering for the light of others. I admit, I'm a little wary of confronting "it"..."

He turned towards Shen, and nodded his approval nevertheless.

"...But we're far from finished around here, and I admit that Shen has an excellent idea. Garro?"

Garro: "Just a few more adjustments to the loading mechanism..."

He had been working tirelessly for some time now on his spare parts. His "adjustments" looked like nothing more than carving eerie sigils into the stock of a sizeable Frankenstein of weaponry: He got to his feet, and admired his work.

What remained of the parts that Garro had gleaned was a large, shoulder-mounted cannon adorned with stabilizing straps that meshed together to allow for even displacement of weight around the body: Various parts of the straps had been counterweighted to allow for comfort and functionality. Various charms and symbols had been attached to and carved into them, and it looked somewhat amusing to the uneducated observer, as though Garro was a traveling salesman for religions half of the world had never heard of (or none of it now, as it were). Or maybe a stock car, advertising for deities.

"There, finished!"

The rest of the group blinked in slight disbelief. Garro felt it, and grimaced.

"What?"

Ark: "Are you serious?"

Garro: "It's a Holy Cannon. Even if most of the gods that are invoked on here are defunct or retired, this thing will serve as a beacon for their regrouping. It hasn't been that long since the world was taken."

Luke: "....You're an idiot."

Garro: "....Good thing you guys aren't human."

He frowned and shouldered the cannon easily, which appeared to give him no encumberance at all. The front barrel of it was wide and bulky, but it quickly slid back into itself as Garro flipped a clasp on it, and the entire gun fell over on Garro's back. Now much more heavily armed than before, he shook his head and waited for everyone to say they were ready to keep going.

"Come on, let's just go."

Shen: "I've been wondering Garro..."

Shen raised a portal in front of everyone.

Shen: "Why have you never tried to use Origin's power?

Ark stepped through the portal, deciding it was best if he went first. Luke, not wanting to look bad, ran in right after him.

Ark stepped out over looking a town, it was probably the only place in the world that still had power. Street lights lit up the town and one building in particular was fully lit...

Doe enjoyed his/her drink peacefully at the bar, not at all disturbed by the people around him/her. Doe took a sip of the vodka, and heard the door slam open. Was it time again already?

Man: "Hey you! You're still here, I told you to get out!"

Doe: "This is the fourth time isn't it?"

The man took a step back as Doe took a gun from under his/her coat and shot the man. He was hit through the shoulder and all he did was turn around and leave.

Doe: "Why does he bother..."

Garro: "The answer to that's pretty simple."

He stepped through the portal to the dilapadated village warily, and checked himself as he emerged from the other side, with Grey and Shen bringing up the rear.

"Origin is part of a trinity of gods. As he is only one part of what could be considered a singular being, in order to tap his power, I'd have to tap all of his power. That includes both of the Phoenixes, which is a little more than I can handle. Aside from that, I try to stay away from guys like DP. Considering what happened..."

He cast his gaze aside. Kalar...

Luke: "Hey guys, chill out, I know these people. Just relax for a bit, I'll get Doe."

Luke laughed to himself as he ran ahead.

Luke: "Oh yeah, and if you see explosions or stuff getting crazy, don't worry about it, just relax!"

Shen: "I can never see what path he's walking down."

Ark: "Is that your way of calling him 'special'?"

Shen laughed, just a tiny bit.

Ark: "After this, is there anyone else?"

Shen: "No... Doe is the last human on the planet."

Luke walked into the bar where Doe was, he could smell Doe from the edge of the run down hell-hole of the town. He took a few steps towards Doe and noticed that he/she was drinking and was looking right at him.

Luke: "It's been awhile."

Doe ignored Luke, even as he took a seat next to him/her, all Doe did was drink.

Luke: "Not going to say anything to me? Come on, and I helped you recover that one time!"

Doe turned to look at Luke, but didn't say anything.

Luke: "You didn't forget did you? Come on! You went after Dracoon and almost got killed, so I stepped in and saved your sorry ass."

Doe just stared.

Luke: "I mean, yeah you made him try and you almost hurt him, but you're way to young to fight against Dracoon."

Doe: "It was your music that made me miss."

Luke: "So the mute finally speaks? You shouldn't have such a delicate thing that a little music breaks it anyways."

Doe: "It was a sniper rifle... because I missed it gave away my position."

Luke sighed

Luke: "Whatever man, the point is, I need a favor."

Doe turned back to his/her drink and finished it.

Doe: "You want to fight the heartless, but why do you need my help?"

Luke: "Actually, I have no idea, some chick with creepy blue eyes told us about you and next thing I know, we're here to get you."

Doe didn't answer, but whipped out his/her gun and aimed it right at Luke's head. He sighed, knowing what comes next and moved as Doe shot. Doe put a bullet with a silver casing into the gun and shot at Luke, who was now on the floor. Luke played a quick note and the bullet detonated, sending up a large explosion of fire.

Outside the city, Ark turned to see the explosion.

Luke: "That good enough for you?"

Doe: "For now..."

Luke got up off the ground and started walking back towards the group, Doe started to follow, but stopped and got himself/herself another drink and then followed.

Shen: "He did it... but I can't tell why Doe decided to come."
