So.

I'm wicked excited about this game. It releases tomorrow. I can't find the original Disgaea anywhere at all, but I sure as hell have this one reserved. And when I get it, this time I won't be giving it back.

Maybe when I do play it, I'll end up playing it enough so that I finally break the damage barriers and do those ridiculous 16-digit damage attacks I've heard so much about. I do love NIS games, but my biggest problem with them is that they require so much time and energy to gain anything out of that I often get sidetracked, distracted, or anything else'd just by life in general. As a result, I never get anything out of what I know is a series of games that has so so much potential. I'm hoping tomorrow that this time will be different. Also that I don't fail college because of it.

I heard Wednesday, or at least that's what Hiryuu keeps saying.

I just hope NIS made enough copies because this one *will* sell. Not quite at Greatest Hits level, mind you, but a lot of RPG fans are going to be drooling over this. Even me. XD

Nope, I've been told tuesday: I went to EB a few days ago to see when it was releasing, and they gave me a presell for it for what I guess is today. Plus, didn't Hiryuu's CT say 8/29/06 for the longest time?

Either way, today or not today, the store's gonna be calling me if it comes in. Just gotta wait til it opens.

I have the same problem. We'd heard great things about Phantom Brave, and I love tactical RPG's (I played the hell out of the original Final Fantasy Tactics back in the day), so we bought the game. The initial battles were fun...but then it seemed like I was fighting a hell of a lot and getting very little to show for it. I had to use virtually all the money I earned each time to heal my characters, and I felt like I wasn't making any progress at all. This frustrated me, and I put the game down and never picked it back up. I've heard that it gets better, but other activities and games have gotten in the way, so I haven't particularly felt like giving it another shot.

Well, NIS games have always been like that, the main difference was the Disgaea wasn't as bad about it. You had good ways to make money and power up your stuff and you felt like you were accomplishing something. The big problem they have is they taunt people with stuff that's only in there for the crazy die-hards. For example, the two best items in La Pucelle were in story battles, one requiring you to be at least level 40-50 when you'd usually be level 10-14, and another where you need to kill a level 100 and you would normally only be 30ish.

Disgaea at least would let you wait till the end of the game to do all the crazy powerleveling required stuff, and it stands alone in that aspect. Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom also had similar issues like La Pucelle. Hell, even Rhapsody had a bit of that. =P

I loved FFT because it had enough challenge to be fun, enough customization with characters to make different builds than your friends, and secrets that didn't require a week of time to sink into doing them. And just for reference, there has been a more anal tactical-RPG than any NIS game: Hoshigami. If you screw up on one recruit, you'll likely be unable to beat the game.

Well, my issue with PB was that units didn't stay on the battlefield. I don't think it's all that good that a unit that you've spent the entire game raising and nurturing still only has a few turns with which to complete a battle, it makes for some very confusing long runs, and you need to worry about having enough units of a comparable degree of strength to survive. Considering a difference in level between characters affects every aspect of survival against them, I'd rather go the Disgaea route and have three or four characters that are so strong that it's not even funny to consider.

EDIT: I've also heard that through transmigration, characters can hit somewhere around... I dunno, level 280000 on the 9999 scale. It just shows a hidden level alongside base level.

Ugh. I remember beating that first story battle and then finding out that I missed out on the super awesome secret item that I'd never be able to get ever again. That pissed me off. One-chance items chafe my ass, especially if they're that undiscoverable. I think it's fair to give people an awesome reward for killing the uberenemy that would ordinarily be left alone, but would it have been that difficult to allow players to get the godly items through optional challenges later in the game?

(For the record, I did feel like I was going somewhere in La Pucelle, and I can't even remember why I put it down. I think I was at a point where I kept getting creamed, and I wasn't in the mood to powerlevel, and then I got distracted.)

Hasting's is calling for the 30th, hence my title. I figured it would be released on a Tuesday like normal but for some reason it isn't as such. I would try checking something like that tomorrow. Hopefully...HOPEFULLY...by then it will be up.

I'm already psyched about it. God knows I've been waiting for this title for more than a year and a half now. Disgaea was great in and of itself. 2 can't disappoint.

As for fun in La Pucelle, try getting Prier up to a Demon Lord. Beating a level 500 demon in a DEI 300 Dark World portal and surviving the entire trip proved to be mofo-hell. I still haven't attained a Demon Overlord rank for her but I know that I need to beat 20 DEI 300 portals with the STARTING levels of 500 for all of them (usually ending around level 1200-1300). I already have several level 2000 Baals at my disposal as it is.

Disgaea...holy crap. Last I checked, my best guy had attack levels in the millions. :\

Makai Kingdom, beat the whole darned deal in 105 hours, secrets and all. Yoshitsuna is the asskicker mech.

...the only game I haven't truly conquered yet is Phantom Brave. Powerleveling in that game is a complete and utter bitch. Beating the very last boss was fscked up in itself. It was harder than any of the other games I had played previously.

So adding everything together, you better believe I'm going to get it...that and beat Rhapsody.

Well, I got the call from EB this morning. I'm going to go pick it up at 4:30. Apparently it had to ship from the west coast, so they get games faster than we do.

Bastards. It was either this or Dirge of Cerberus. It'd better be worth the wait.

EDIT: GAME GET

I'm awaiting Hiryuu to visit this topic and give his detailed impressions.

Of course, that'll probably only happen weeks from now given how addicted he is to NIS games, but still.

Hasting's didn't have it in. Not happy. Probably won't have it in for another week and I don't have anywhere else to get it nearby. Damn Arkansas.

Oh well, it's not like I would've been able to play it for another month hardcore anyways.

Oh Grey...for best results, abuse the item world. It's even more potent this time around, I hear. If you can get your ATKs into the hundred thousands in that game, then you'll be doing fine.

I was reading the GameFAQs (...) board for Disgaea 2 and apparently a lot of stores (mainly GameStop) didn't get it in yesterday due to UPS issues. So some people were happy and others were incredibly pissed thinking it was their god-given right to have the game on release.

I think NIS might have to do a second printing of DVD's at this rate.

Well, thus far I'm enjoying it... The game's made me laugh on multiple occasions, and I really like the reappearance of the Prinny Squad, being my favorite running characters in all the more recent NIS games. Music's not so bad, and I appreciate the hub overworld layout, even if it's really nothing more than a fluffy GUI for the menus and shops. The combat? Same as always. But that's not a bad thing at all.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have more ass to kick.

I can't run it on PCSX2 yet. Needs SSE2 since the original SSE support is borked in 0.91. Supposed to be fixed in 0.92 but I haven't found a beta yet.

I'm loving it so far. Not as good as the original but still worthy of being called disgaea 2.

I'm thinking about cosplaying Adell for anime boston.

GI practically drooled on it. Got my mag from them just yesterday and they seemed to like it. 8.75 double-rated.

I think it's gonna run in time like Makai Kingdom did. Not so much of a storyline but far more put into getting all the secrets in the game. Disgaea itself had heaps of storyline that sets it apart from a lot of RPGs I've played...then again, I wouldn't have played it had I not found La Pucelle.

And yes, I still don't have it.

To quote a certain site:
"I've read reviews that suggest Disgaea 2 basically the original Disgaea all over again - they say that like it's a bad thing. If you still have an appetite for Nippon Ichi's take on strategy after Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, and Makai Kingdom, then no force on Earth could suspend your ravenous hunger anyhow."

So basically, if you liked the previous games, and still aren't tired of all that levelgrinding and whatnot, this is your game. I get tired of all that levelgrinding before I have even TRIED the game, so I'll pass. Besides, Disgaea is loli and La Pucelle is more.. uh.. curvy. I prefer the latter (just to add another reason I don't like Disgaea 2 when I haven't even played it).

Levelgrinding was only inheirant big-time in one of the NIS games: Phantom Brave. There is no real EASY way of power-leveling in that game. In fact, the guides I've seen that cover it well say 'Welcome to Hell' in the start of it.

Picked this up today and I'm loving it. Although I never played the original, I heard too many good things about it and being a long time RPG fan I just had to try this one out. I like how it seems so easy to get into, its fast paced at times, and overall the gameplay is just really fun. I think it'll be something to keep me busy until FFXII comes out.
