How do you create a demo of a rom hack and what does the file that you send have to include?

That would definitely depend on what you plan to put into the demo. What you should probably do is make sure to use a fresh rom, and copy only the data you want the player to see from your modified rom to the demo rom. Then test the demo rom to make sure everything still works properly, there are no glaring bugs, etc., and make an ips patch for the demo rom.

As for what it includes, it could include a read me of how much of the actual game your demo represents. But as what goes into the demo, that is up to you.

I usually make a demo when I'm up to a certain point myself, so as I know what I need to have done once I've decided.

Demos... aren't fun. If you release a demo of say half the game, chances are the player will not bother with the final version. When you get to a point where you could release a demo you should make a beta and send it to a few private testers instead. They can find bugs and make suggestions, at this same time publicly release screenshots of interesting things, but not too many, it'll be just as bad as releasing the demo. Build hype, but not too much hype (People shouldn't be disappointed), and finish the hack.

So many hacks come out as a demo and are never finished. It's sad.

First get a program called SNES Tool which you can find somewhere on Zophar.net
I can't think right off the top of my head what section it's listed under for downloading.
But when you have that program. (it's dos based), open it.
All you have to do is use the up/down/left/right arrow keys on your keyboard to select the options so ...

Select "create IPS" ...and press enter
it'll then ask you to select an unchanged ROM file..
so make sure to select a unchanged/clean/backup ROM and press enter.
then it asks you to select a "changed" rom ...so find your ROM that you've made changes to ..and press enter and it'll make a little IPS file based off the changes you've made to the ROM.

Screw SNEStool, Lunar IPS is much better, from experience. ;

Grab it from the same place, and follow the same steps.

You know, I have a question actually about this.
Sometimes when I use SNES Tool to apply IPS patches to ROM's ...it'll give some error saying "file IPS not cut/split" or some weird crap like that..

What does that mean. :-\ ...and also i'm wondering...
Is it true that it can't handle applying or creating IPS patches over 100 KB in size? ...because my hack i'm working on ..my IPS file is getting up to about almost 50 kb now ...and i'm not even half way done with it yet ..still got months of work left to do ..and i don't want to experience any serious problems if it won't allow me to create any more backups over 100 kb.

From what I know, SNESTool has some strange errors. I think I've heard the patching errors before.

But, looking at FuSoYa's page, Lunar IPS supports IPS patches up to 16mb (The limit of the format), and is virtually bugfree, so honestly, there's no reason to keep using SNESTool (Heck, LIPS was designed as a replacement to overcome it's shortcomings)

This is why you release a demo of, say, one level from each 'section' of the game; just to give a feel for the overall differences in the hack and to provide a sample of what the finished product will be. Any demo containing over 20% of the final game is stupid and should be reconsidered; give them a sample that wants them to play more.

In tl;dr format: deep demos short, fun, and including a wide variety of things from the hack.

Ok thanks! I will hopefully be able to release demos of my hacks (and the full version of Impossible Mario 1)
