That's right, I made two hacks before ever entering the hacking community. But, I only just now made IPS patches of them. One is a Super Mario World hack, the other is a FInal Fantasy 1 hack. I'm still working on them, even though they're supposed to be for beginners and could be considered complete. I will re-post in this topic to post the other hack, but I don't want to double post, so I'd like you people to check out the one I have right now.

Oops. Sorry. I don't have screenshots I can upload yet, but I can provide descriptions. How thorough do you want me to be? Like, say exactly what I did to it, or just how it would look and feel?

Super Mario World: Recolour

Take all the levels in Super Mario World, screw around with the palletes, and you almost have what I made. Almost all levels have been changed, I know there's at least one that hasn't. A lot of areas haven't been recoloured, but I'm getting to them. Oh, and I put all the switches in Yoshi's House, all the switch palaces have level ends instead of pipes. And there's about four extra levels, and one impossible fight. See if you can beat the Big Boo miniboss in his new arena. >=)

Final Fantasy: Storyline 1

You start on a metal walkway. Or, you would, if this were the official version. The beta version starts you on Beta Island, where there's basically everything. All the towns, the Ice Cave, pretty much every tile in the overworld. You could get the Airship, then the Lavaship (All water is now lava), then Class Up, go fight Dracula (Who WAS the Vampire, but I changed all "the Vampire"s in the game to "Dracula"s, except maybe the monster name) then the Lich, without even going to Sarda, then go and save Princess Sarah.

Your SMW hack sounds a bit like my first, which I didn't release because it sucked. Changing palettes at random may be fun, and impress your non-hacker friends, but people here expect a lot more effort to be put into a hack (making new levels from scratch is a must).

I completely destroyed the wires in two of the levels (Third Special level and Cheese Bridge) and made whole new wire paths... does that count?

No, people want levels completely from scratch, or else it's just playing through the same game with different colors. In all honesty, what would make somebody want to play through your hack over another hack that has all 100% new levels, new blocks, new enemies, and graphics?

Not much. People want more from a hack these days other than pretty colors.

I don't think I'm creative enough to think up any new levels, although I did make one from scratch... it's down one of the pipes at Yoshi's House, and is sometimes substituted for a Bonus Game. I have yet to create a way thru as Super or Fire Mario though...

Well, non-creative levels are always better than unchanged levels, so even if you don't think you'll manage it, try it. Maybe do a small hack (i. e. few number of levels) at the beginning, then start bigger projects as you get some experience in level design.

Heh, that's funny. The only level in mine that wasn't modified from the originals was a bonus level in Yoshi's House.

Concerning the FF1 hack...even though it's a beta, there doesn't seem to be anything promising about it. All that's done is the randomizing and recoloring of objects. The main point of making a hack of a game like FF1 would be to create a new story. You can't do this if you have everything out of order to start with. Mabey your next "beta" could be a bit more linear.

I just remembered something you guys could help me with: I have no idea how to edit the title screens, or the text from the message boxes in SMW. I've seen it done in other hacks, and was wondering how they did it.

You can edit the text from message boxes in the overworld editor, fool around with it and you'll find it. The only two messages you can use are the two for the level you entered in (If you enter level 105 and go in a pipe to level 1FF, the message box there will take its message from level 105 still). The message for the story intro thing is message zero on level 00, and Yoshi's message he gives you when he first sees you is message 1 of level 00.

Also, to edit the title screen map, it's level C7. To edit the movements, there are tutorials out on how to do that, check SMWCentral, I'm pretty sure that if a tutorial can be found anywhere, it would be there. If not there, check the stickies in the SMW hacking forum, use Google, and search the board.

No Goldensunboy, the correct answer for questions like those are RTFM.

I "fooled around" with the overworld editor as much as I could, and didn't find it. If you posted a screenshot of where it is, or told me the exact location that'd help.

TWO hints. All new, never before seen.

1. Message box icon in toolbar.

2. File menu, or, if older version, Chelsea code.

Thank you for your time.

And no. Don't ask what the Chelsea code is. It's at SMWcentral. And, in Goldensunboy's words, "...there are tutorials out on how to do that, check SMWCentral, I'm pretty sure that if a tutorial can be found anywhere, it would be there. If not there, check the stickies in the SMW hacking forum, use Google, and search the board."

1. There's no icons on the toolbar.

2. There isn't anything useful in the File menu, either. *doesn't ask what the Chelsea code is*

Well, I'm tired, and it's 1:20 AM. I'm gonna go to sleep. See ya.

I now pronounce you and HyperMackerel 'Dr. Evil and Mini-Me"

But yeah read the manual and go look up tutorials on your friend Google. If google isn't being friendly go ask that pervert Jeeves.

Don't you mean HyperHacker? =3

EDIT: Is there possibly a way to get the icons to appear?
