I have a 20GB Seagate hard drive. I used the Disc Wizard to set up the partitions and format it etc. I put in the XP Installation disc and restart the computer. An error reading "NTLDR missing. Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot."

I looked up information on fixing it, but the only thing I found was an image for a floppy to boot up and fix it. Problem with that was that it assumed the problem was with a previous installation of XP, and not a blank hard drive that I'm trying to install it on. Any help?

Try checking your hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tool, maybe it's corrupt.

Was it pre-formatted (most of them aren't, but some are)? If so, then that may be just part of the problem... see, Microsoft's FORMAT utility has weird inane bugs that cause it not to work properly.

If the drive was pre-formatted, try downloading DBAN (floppy disk image or CD-ROM image; the work the same but on different boot media) and wiping the disk with zero ("Quick Erase" in DBAN), only one pass. See if that helps.

I figured it out. The XP disk I had was a burnt copy, but it wasnt burned via ISO, so it couldnt boot in DOS. I used a 98 cd, installed 98, then installed XP from the burnt disc. Its fine now, I guess the thread can be closed.

What? That didn't make sense.

Copies of the Windows XP disc... work exactly the same. I know, I have used burned copies.

It makes sense - the error said that it couldn't find the NT Boot Loader - so the computer wasn't booting from the CD properly. What happened was probably that the Windows XP CD was created as a non-bootable CD (such as if he were to just copy the files from one CD to another, instead of creating an ISO or doing a disc copy), and so the computer read the disk in the CD drive, found it to not be a bootable CD, and tried to boot off of the (empty) hard drive. It found no NT Boot loader on the hard drive, so it displayed that message. The Windows 98 CD was properly created as a boot CD, so he installed off of that, and then started the Windows XP installation from within windows (and so the computer wouldn't need to boot off of the XP disc)
