Okay, I used to think that school was not all that bad. I figured, how could it get worse, give us school uniforms, keep our cell phones if we got caught with them?

Then, it happened. It hit the bottom of Challenger Deep.

They call THIS a wellness policy!
They took our soft drinks, our flavored water, and our good snacks, feed us food that is anything but good, and a bunch of other things. At orientation, a bunch of guys behind me called our principal everything but a principal. It was horrible.

Now, where this is a problem. How in the world is flavored water bad for you? I used to drink the Raspberry Dasani water, when they had it, and started drinking it over my usual Dr. Pepper. But now, they cut it out. I CAN'T STAND IT!!!!!!

Has anyone ever had something like this at school?

School's need to not worry about this stuff, and worry more about teaching our kids how to spell "prison".

God forbid you don't have soft drinks.

I mean, yeah, it sucks, but it's not the end of the world. I went through the Catholic School treatment and I survived just fine.

At least you're not getting raped by your classmates.

In my school, bullies used to gang up on me in packs of, what, 5, and try to kill me.

....Your, what, High School, can't even match up to my Elementary school for that.

You can trink toilet water, if it really bothers you...

Back when I was still in school, the whole school had a mass fight consisting of like 200 people, which led to the abolishing of breaks. If I remember correctly, some teachers were hurt there as well.
The pupils also lit fireworks inside the school building, and did some other stuff I can't remember at the moment...

I can only say it was horrible back then.

All that I can safely express is how sorry I feel for this generation of kids.
Try buying sodas after school, then smuggle them into lunch. I used to do that with energy drinks when they told us not to buy anything from the Target across the street.

I realize that a lot of schools have it worse off than what ..Super Luigi is describing- violence, and.. whatnot. I didn't have.. the greatest high school experience either.

But I do think he has a point; banning what is essentially bottled water? o.O That's just.. really stupid. I could maybe understand limiting your soft drink consumption, even though I don't think that's really the school's responsibility, but I don't see how banning flavoured water is worth it. I'd be curious to know what food they serve you now, since you said they serve you things that are anything but good. heh.

I think schools are wasting a lot of time worrying about stupid things when they're supposed to be worrying about the students' education, like Black Lord said. >>

My high school NEVER sold soft drinks to begin with since they were never offered a contract, and the one time that a company (I think it was Pepsi) offered them a deal, they were asking for too many conditions so the school turned it down.

I can see the soft drink thing because of all the teen obesity crap, but flavored water is NOT that bad for you and it's a hell of a lot healthier than Coke. There's maybe a little bit of sugar in flavored water, if that.

Bring your own soft drink to school if it's that bad. Our school didn't sell the stuff but they didn't care what you brought as your bagged lunch if you didn't eat cafeteria food; leftover pizza, a sandwich, a salad, Coke, etc.

It could be that there was a high risk of vandalism for the drink machines, or that the costs of maintaining them outweighed the benefits of having them. Either one would be a suitable reason to try to get rid of the drink machines.

As for school food... If you don't like it, bring your own. It's what I did all 12 years of my school life.

And, on the note of the people behind you badmouthing the principal... It happens. There will always be people like that, so there's no use really worrying about it.

Example on the food.

Today, we had what they call pizza, which is supposed to be good for you. Tomatoes, help fight heart diasese, chesse diary product, strong bones, etc, bread, whatever it does, pepperoni's, meat. All the good parts of the old food pyrimid. Well, the pizza was burnt, for the most part. There was hardly any sauce. 3 pepperoni's, but the crust was okay, cause it is kind of hard to screw up bread.

I think Black Lord is right. Learning is the important part.

And about flavored water, it's easy to buy some of it and regular Dasani water, swap the labels, and go to school without them knowing, so now I'm happy.

After surveys of my high school population, a new principal came in and slowly began fazing out soft drinks, candy, unhealthy snacks, etc. from the school. Fortunately I just finished high school last year, so I don't have to worry about that. But personally, I think it is not a great idea for schools to attempt and control what its students consume, that's more of a parental problem than anything.

Your school is not like prison. Not even close.

You are young, you are expected to rebel, if you dont you are a disappointment, so think up creative ways to smuggle in all the flavored water you can What can they actually do to you for having illegal flavored water? Its not a crime!

You should be happy it's not actually like a prison, or you'd have to hoof the water to get it in.

As for uniforms, I would've been happy if they had implemented them when I was in school, it would force people to wear pants that fit instead of having their butt hanging out. So actually uniforms would have made it less like a prison.

Moreover, they should worry about teaching children how to use (or not use) apostrophes in the correct way.

Nonetheless, I'm not so sure NCLB is necessary, but its not really a bad try at trying to help idiots; the real problem is that oblivious and uncaring parents instill attitudes of laziness and apathy in their kids, and that easily leads to kids just not caring about learning a damn thing in school. Nothing has changed, really, because kids who care will try hard on the NCLB tests and score high, and kids who don't care will fail. No Child Left Behind and this removing of certain food from school are just feeble attempts at reforming the behavior of kids in school, when really it starts at home, and with the parents.

I know that recently I keep hearing a push locally for bottled water to not be available in schools -- not even flavoured water, just bottled water.

The reason? It doesn't contain fluoride, so there is concern that people aren't getting enough of it for their teeth to stay healthy.

I think though if schools do get rid of bottled water brands, they were offering filtered water, which has all the nasties of tap water taken out but the fluoride is still in.

But yes, it's not uncommon for schools to remove / ban things for health reasons. Oh well, maybe a few years down the track when you haven't picked up bad habits from now, you'll be thankful.
