I have nothing to say but . I'd like to think that they have more evidence that it's there than they are presented as having, but I can't imagine a decision like this as being anything but stupid.

It's...

Maybe it's where all that viagra I ordered online went to?

Seriously, can you imagine having to explain this situation to the family?

"Pardon me, ma'am, but your son lost a lawsuit filed by my company, AOL, for sending spam mail to millions of people. He owes us like twelve million and we haven't seen a dime. If it's ok with you, we'd like to dig for buried gold on the land that he can use to pay us back with. Think of it like e-piracy loot."

Damn. Why is AOL even still around? I have 2GB of search queries their users inputed, on my computer. Isn't there a class action lawsuit from over the 600k users who had their searches made public in March 2006?

Because they can't. You waive that right by using their policy. (note this is an old link and may no longer apply)

However, something that is recent, emphasis mine:

Your AOL Member information, including the contents of your private online communications, may be accessed and disclosed in response to legal process (for example, a court order, search warrant or subpoena); in other circumstances in which AOL believes the AOL Service is being used in the commission of a crime; when we have a good faith belief that there is an emergency that poses a threat to the safety of you or another person; or when necessary either to protect the rights or property of AOL, or for us to render the service you have requested.
Note that you can stretch that last bold line pretty far, for almost any reason; you can even concoct that they "needed to release it to do further research into relevant [re]searching".

So yeah.

What the fuck. The American legal system really has taken a turn for the worst. Anyway, what kind of retarded ISP decides that instead of having some guy pay them back money all of his life, they'd rather dig up his parents garden for gold? It sounds kind of crazy.

Aside from the fact that there's no worthwhile evidence that it'd be at their house, it actually kinda makes sense. The guy made tons of money doing something that he then lost a lawsuit over, so the company is... acquiring the assets gained from it. Nevermind that they're doing it with shovels.

And Xkeeper Alexa's little quote IS rather scary... But I suppose it's fair enough warning not to tell people private things over any medium besides the air directly between you.

Shouldn't there be a law stating that a company cannot just put anything they want into their policies? i.e. something bad for the customer
Because in Belgium there is.

Please read and understand the source material before you go insulting governments, kthx

It doesn't say they were granted permission by the legal system to dig for gold, it says they are asking the legal system for permission. It hasn't been granted yet. You can appeal to the government for whatever the hell you want, but that doesn't mean it will go through.

There are laws like this in America, but they don't apply to disclosure of privacy for legal reasons.

That's because there is no constitutional right to privacy no matter how many people seem to think otherwise.

I wish AOL would just die already. Seeing their shitty programs make my eyes hurt.

And what the hell is AOL thinking for digging? Pretty soon AOL is going to turn into the next diggers hotline, and if its as bad as their internet service..... Prepare to die if they hit a gas line.

I don't see why this is stupid... he owes them money that he doesn't have and damn well isn't likely to ever get. They suspect there's gold on his property. Since he can't pay them, they go for his gold instead. Makes sense to me.

Now if they're accusing him of hiding this gold, then that's fairly dumb...

Clearly you DIDN'T READ the article. They ARE accusing him of hiding the gold. If you actually read the article, it says AOL is digging for gold on the guy's PARENT'S PROPERTY. Parents that he has apperantly not seen in quite some time.

It'd be awesome if he just bought "platinum bundles" of viagra. Like tonnes and tonnes of viagra and pornography and stashed them in his parents yard until he was 50. Or really looking to party.
