Yeah, I made yet another SMB hack. This hack alters the graphics for the better, IMO. I added some custom stuff (Ground (Inspired by SMB2[J]), some blocks, etc.) and stuff from SMB3 (Goombas, Mario, etc.).

The shots are old, and Mario's colors are fixed (Grey is back to red). I guess his fire get-up kinda looks wierd, but it's fine. Luigi does look wierd though. I think he has a white outline.

You can see the topic at the forum I regular; PureZC.

Screenies:

.IPS in a .ZIP

I hope you enjoy this. I should also mention that I'm working on a "real" SMB hack. I have through 2-2 done. It is sort of buggy though. It is pretty hard too. It's a lot harder than lost "Lost Levels" (SMB2[J]) if you consider that game hard, that is. I though about calling is "Lost Levels 2", but right now, it is under the code name, SMB: Challenge.

The graphics look nice, but that really is all I can say about it. I guess it is a slight improvement, only if you level the title screen intact and just added "DX" under it.

Hmm, weird color choices. Why didn't you change regular Mario's brown to red ?
And the white outlined Fire Mario is another strange choice... Whatever, as it seems like you're done with this hack and want to move on anyway.

And you should have taken new screenshots rather than post old ones and say they're old.

That should answer your first question.

I had read that. The fact just the grey has been fixed still implies the brown is still there.

By colors fixed, I assumed s/he meant all of them.

Anyway, that's why posting up-to-date screenshots would have helped...

I may have some new screens later, but right now, I'm too lazy to upload them

This is not really the final version (hence the "v.1.0" at the end of the zip name). I hope to make Mario's colors like those in SMB3 (Black outline/ overalls, red shirt/ hat). I also want to change that ugly ass fire flower I made back. I wanna change the Koopas to the outlined ones in SMB3, and I really need to fix the swimming sprites.

After working for a while on SMB: Challenge, I realized that the engine is limiting. There is also a nasty, game stopping bug in 2-2 (the warp zone message suddenly appears in the middle of the stage). If I change the graphics at all in this hack (Which will probably be the afore mentioned things) I will re-insert them into the other hack. I can't garantee at this point I will finish SMB: Challenge... If I don't I'll release what I have. I assure you, it's no "n00b hack" either. It is a good solid, challenging hack. It has a few bugs though, but only one game stopper, which I need to quickly squish.

Graphic changes + Nothing else = Recipe for Disaster.

I dunno why anybody would desire a graphics-only patch nowadays.

Yeah, graphics hacks are old. You really do need to add a new title, and not have "By Rex" there, steal the DX for Links Awakening DX and paste it on, see what it looks like.

Also, you might want to think of another name, as "Challenge" is already in use by another series of hacks (though I don't believe an SMB Challenge exists).

Hate to be a bitch, but the only new graphics I like out of the whole thing, are those unbreakable blocks leading up to the finish flag.

As Darkmatt said...
A hack based on just graphics alone is pointless.

The white outlines are ugly, and Super Mario Bros DX is already the name of an official SMB port to GB Color.

There are about four or five other hacks already which feature only the original SMB with "updated" graphics from Mario 3 and so on, and at least one of them used the word "DX" in the title. Much that they sucked, those ones, at least, got the palettes right.

Not to be a total asshole or anything, but I would scrap this project and just focus on the other hack you mentioned if I were you. Do you have any screen shots of that?

Hmm.

This is kinda the result I expected. I guess that's what you get for releasing something semi-incomplete. This is a bit out there, but, I made a little page for it with a lot more info, and new screenshots for those of you that don't want to download it (see sig). I'll also have one for my other, "real" SMB hack soon.

But, isn't the point of a game to entertain? This was merely meant as one more way to enjoy one of the best games ever made. But, if I finish the other one, Hopefully, it'll clear my not-so-good name I've already aquired (damn n00b graphics hack!)

The problem is, there are already five hundred billion other "ways to enjoy the game," and this one just...doesn't stand out from the rest. At all. To be painfully honest, it sits at the back with the likes of Ninja Acid Bros. and Super Bald Bros. (also graphics-only hacks), only with slightly more effort.

I'm sorry, but SMB is such an overhacked game that you have to do something really special in order to get noticed nowadays.

I'm sure there are a number of crappy Japanese hacks. Just this is an English forum, so we only really hear about the really good ones.
