- Forums will go read-only
- Users must be approved via applying (see Applications forum)

The forums will go approval-only at tomorrow, 06:00 GMT-8.
Note, however, that all can read; only approved members can post.

Also note that, with any luck, the Pokemon and SMW hacking forums will be moved back to their original category, and the PkMn hacking "idiot defense" lowered (as with this system, there is no need for it)...

So, according to the rules, you actually need to make a hack to be granted ROM Hacking privileges?

Otherwise the idea sounds good, except the part above. (though a better idea would be to grant access for all now registered users here minus known troublemakers, and make only new users need to ask for approval.)

No, you just need to concisely state that you are, in fact, in posession of more than two firing brain cells.

Though, however, any sort of prior experience or even initiative is great.

At the risk of sounding offensive to your superiority, this seems more like stupidity paranoia than idiot defense. It is a good idea however. The only thing I dread in this is potential collateral damage, if you will. Some users who are smart but lacking self-confidence might be scared off due to the circumstances. Or maybe there are people who seem idiotic on the outside (due to their typing skills, for example), but are talented on the inside. Most importantly, this system doesn't seem very friendly towards new people who are idiots when they join but are willing to learn and not become idiots. It just doesn't give them a chance.

If you fuck up your typing skills and you're not drunk/tired/bharlhgablfkh'd, you're an idiot.

We have the backspace button.

Not necessarily. Bio tends to type with no regard for capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and has a few grammatical and spelling errors here and there, but he's one of the more experienced ROM hackers on the board. Although he is a shoe-in for approval, there's always a possibility that there may be another such user who comes along eventually.

Staff can look at existing posts of this person and see if the person is worthy of getting approval. It is not like proper grammar is the key to victory (and it would be stupid if it is), so don't worry.

I tend to be lax on my own grammar/punctuation -- it's just if you give no effort at all, you come off as a total dumbass.

I mean, I drop caps all the time, it's just force of habit from -- yep -- IRC>

What about people that like to comment on upcoming hacks and editors? I think many can agree with me that it should go only as far as thread making. We should still be able to reply.

There are stupid people replying though too. Besides, if people can made good replies to hacks, then they should have no problem being approved right?

By the way, whoever thought of this was a genius.

Would you mind fixing your post with an opinion as to why it sucks, or am I just going to have to ban you?

*Xkeeper isn't in a particularly good mood today, by the way.

It says that only people that are making hacks/editors will get permission, and if you are not going to contribute to the community then you won't get in. So what do I have to do, make an editor so I can comment on peoples hacks?

So apparently, if I'm not going to submit a Rom Hack or something related to it, then I can't become approved. It doesn't make sense.
This should be furthur clarified so that it doesn't confuse people.

If this was applied to art forms, the only thing you'd ever see would be pointless ass-kissing ('omg good') or pointless flaming ('omg wtf u sux').

Constructive ciritismm is probably one of the more useful contriutions.

Let me try and calm some of the paranoia by saying that it will be harder to get denied (or "de-approved" if already approved) than it will be to get approved in the first place. We just want you to prove that you have, as Xkeeper so wonderfully put it, "more than two firing brain cells." We don't expect an essay on the history of ROM hacking and your grand visions for the future of the community, but just a general idea of what you plan to contribute (yes, constructive criticism and ideas ARE considered contributions!). ONE application of at least ONE paragraph is all we expect, and that gets you lifetime access to the forums, provided you follow the rules. Is that really so hard, or unfair?

This system is mainly in place to keep the blatant idiots out--i.e. those with just enough brain cells to register a username and password, and put little to no effort into their posts (*PRIME EXAMPLE*). If you haven't already been banned and/or had your name painted red, you probably don't have anything to worry about (we will be looking at previous posts for existing members who apply).

One more thing: the "Rules and Instructions" for approval are still a work-in-progress (Xkeeper and I were working on them up until the very last minute this morning ), and will likely be revised from time to time as the system matures and new ideas and concerns come to light. They'll probably also be rewritten to sound less harsh--it's just that I do my best writing in that casual, more "aggressive" style, and I wasn't about to forego sweet, precious sleep just to make it sound like stale legalese.

You know, I'm actually a semi-active member of a board that does require that. It's awesome. Certainly more awesome than the flawed, flawed system in place now... I mean we're letting in anyone. Even timdevril got in.
