Hey, I'm just starting out ROM hacking and fancied mucking about with SMB1. I've searched around and looked at the various docs available and worked out how the maps are sewn together, the enemy/object tables and where the warp zone destination worlds are, cool enough.

But does anyone know where the layouts for the different backgrounds (you know, indicating where the clouds/hills/fences go) are stored? It had better not be another complex mess of bitfields otherwise I'm gonna cry.

I'm fairly certain that the clouds and whatnot are objects on the foreground, that you can walk through.

They're not in the enemy or object tables for the maps though, they can't be touched in any of the level editors I've looked at (YY, SMB Utility).

There must be another table with these in somewhere...

Unfortunantly, you can't change the way backgrounds look. You can only switch between backgrounds that are avaliable in the header editor list (Edit-> Edit Header, [PullDown] Background). You can also change the scenery.

You can also switch to a new background at any point in the stage. Place an object tile on the second white line below the stage, right click, edit, and go to "change background". This can be used to create a cool night/ day effect... I kinda rambled there. My point is, no, you can't change what they look like, only which one is used...

A mario 1 editor should soon come out or a later version that like LM you can change the BG, then you could do a SMAS SMB1 on nes GFX hack, which would be neet.

Then again you can already to that, though the BG would be basic.

That's not really true. The data for how those clouds/hills/etc. are arranged are somewhere in the ROM. One only needs to find it and understand that data, then they can edit it.

Been there, edited that.

Used a special background editor I can't remember the name of.
