So in a discussion in one LiveJournal community I frequent on someone getting nailed for doing 90 mph and hitting the wall twice on a highway around here (and yet, she was still in control), someone proposed the following:

I'm still a firm proponent of not making cars for civvies that can exceed the speed limit. There's no reason a consumer vehicle needs to go 135mph. EVER.

Good point, there's really no reason anyone needs to go 135 mph. But he means you shouldn't be able to go any faster than, say, 70 mph. (If you're looking at the link, it starts with a comment by someone named "lovecrafty" asking "Mind explaining why you were intentionally driving your car into the shoulder?".) The guy who proposed this... really doesn't seem to make much of a case. I'm not entirely sure why he suggests capping cars at 70 mph. Is it because people speed? Because they endanger innocent people? Because he said so? Take a guess which comments there are mine, and you'll see my argument.

So the question: would you drive a car that could not go any faster than the highest local highway speed limit? What would it take for you to do that? Legal reasons? Some ridiculously compelling feature such as triple-digit gas mileage, running on renewable energy, or producing Maine spring water for exhaust? Why should such an initiative be enacted?

There are some countries that don't have a speed limit on highways (ex. Germany), and for these countries the industry needs to continue making cars that go this fast, otherwise economy will break down there since these countries' economy are usually dependant on the nonexistant speed limit.

And even if we take out these exceptions, you can do anything as long as you aren't caught, and so the cars should stay as they are, good old petrol cars with high speed capatibility. I wouldn't want to drive anything else.

So...Germans all drive super-duper-fast-made-for-export cars on the Autobahn and that is the achilles heal of their economy?

I'd drive a car that was only built to go 100mph. I don't think I've ever gone much higher than that. Hell, I don't think I own a car that can hit 135mph at all, so that'd mean nothing to me.

I just don't need it. It wouldn't matter.

The fact in America is that if you're not speeding by at least 5mph, you're going too slow.

Unless it got triple-digit gas milage, no. Especially not because you'd be screwed if you tried to go, say, to Texas where the speed limit is 85 (since local highways are uually 65 tops, and middle-of-nowhere is 75)

You'd actually become a traffic hazard that way, and it'd just cause more problems.

I think that's the first thing you've ever written that I've lauged out loud at .

The car I currently drive "could" go up to 90 or so - the speedometer stops around there - but it begins to shake violently just under 80. Even so, I bring it up to that speed on streches of highway that are effectively barren of traffic, have good visibility, and really offer no challenges or dangers; for the day-to-day drive, though, I don't think it ever goes much faster than 50.

From what I've heard and read, approximately 55mph is the ideal speed as far as gasoline efficiency goes. For that reason, some highways around here (North Jersey) have readjusted their maximum limits to just that number, though I would hardly imagine that it's followed except under direct police supervison.

Anyhow, since I feel like I've said nothing of relevance...yeah, I would buy a car that tops out at around 100mph (or even lower), but maybe only if there were some tradeoff like, as proposed, an incredibly number of miles to the gallon. I would likely never need, or even have the opportunity, to bring a car much over 90, anyway.

Apperantly many of you don't even realize that many cars already have speed limiters in them known as 'governors'. Most low-end cars ship with cheapass tires that shred at 115mph. Manufacturer solution? Install a peice of hardware in the car that hard-caps the top speed at 110mph. If any of you own a 3rd (and probably 4th) generation J-body vehicle made by GM, try it and you'll see what I mean.

The difference being that this thread is talking about cars that would be limited to a much lower number (55-75), whihc would have a much greater impact than 110 does.

True. Also, not all cars have governors even now. I've pushed my car to 155mph before, althrough according to the spec, you can actually push the engine until it explodes.

My car, a 2003 Turbo VW Beetle, has hit 120 mph, although I was not the one driving it.

Capping speeds is a bad thing though. Let the cops handle speeding. They are more than happy to write business.

If the speed was limited to 55-75 mph, what happens if you have an emergency and need to get somewhere very fast? Like if someone needs rushed to the hospital and you live out in the middle of nowhere?

The law is the law. An emergency is a mitigation, not an excuse.

So you're saying that if you had a medical emergency and needed to get to a hospital 5 minutes ago, and the nearest one is 20 miles down a rural highway, you'd go 55 MPH. Because that is the law, and its more important than someone you love's life.

I would call an ambulance, since ambulance drivers get to do all sorts of crazy crap and they'd definitely get to where I am before I got to the hospital.

I'd call an ambulance to, if possible, but that's not always an option. If I ever had a hunting accident back when I used to hunt, I'd have no way to call an ambulance, being out in the middle of nowhere with no phone. Either I or my friend could have bled to death by the time we drove 45 and 55 MPH to the hospital 20 miles away.

That would mean that going 70 would require flooring it. I don't really think flooring it should ever be necessary... people can make their own choice whether or not they want to follow the law. Plus, going 70 on the freeway here would get you shot, everyone goes 80+ unless there's traffic.

Something like that, yes.

The thing is that most Germans have a work place that is 15-40 miles away from their home. Thanks to the non-existing speed limit on the Autobahn, they manage to reach their workplace in time.
If there would be a speed limit, they wouldn't be able to get to their workplace and get jobless, and there are already enugh jobless people in Germany (last time I've counted, 5 million people)

Emergencies override laws. So if there is an emergency, you may drive as fast as you want, as long as you have proof that it's really an emergency.

It wouldn't put a cap on performance, just on the top speed.

In other words, I don't think you'd have to floor it.

I think instead of capping speeds in an attempt to solve a problem people should be taught (and tested periodically) on how to drive properly.

The USA has the worst accident rates in the world. It's obviously not just speed related because places like Germany have no speed limits on some roads.

I just think being more strict on testing and not just allowing anyone that can hold a steering wheel drive a car.

Nothing overrides laws. Emergencies only do in the minds of the people who break them. Law is meant to be obeyed.
