as seen here: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=7136 , I had a little brush with a hacker in windows (yeah yeah =P) anyway, I've been in ubuntu for now, until I can think of step 2. I've backed up all my necessary files, so I'm ready to do a reinstall, but I'd really rather not.

So I'll just run a windows virus scan from linux and then beef up my security (offline). But I don't know any programs that will do that.

Try clamav. It's a virus scanner for email servers but it can scan local disks, too. Also, it's free. Only problem is you probably have to compile it. :p

Compile? pfft, I can handle compiling. Just... I hate installing compilers T_T (which I'll have to do because I'm on a fresh-ish install).

Anyway found some binaries here, included are links to the .deb packages I'd have to use for Ubuntu. Tanks for de info yo.

The RIP LiveCD contains ClamAV, also somewhere on RIP (web site or CD-ROM, I forget which) there's instructions on updating it before the scan.

In ubuntu, you might just be able to type "sudo apt-get install clamav" and be on your way.

the apt-get worked. and man, scanning for viruses takes foreeeever doing it that way, yeesh. There was a worm in opera, but that was most likely unrelated (0 vulnerabilities in opera my ass). other than that, all was well.
