On my new computer, snes9x randomly freezes up every once in a while, and I have to exit with Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Does anyone know anything that can help? Or has anyone else experienced it? It worked fine on my old computer

It's version 1.43, by the way.

Is it any particular game that's causing the freeze ups? Is there anything else you're running with SNES9x going? What type of OS are you using? Anything else you could give us would help out.

OS is an abbreviation for Operating system; Windows 9x, 2000, XP, or Mac, or Linux perhaps.

What game were you trying to play? Snes9x doesnt like some games, though, so try zSNES... it sometimes crashes for me, though...

One of the things that could cause this is a lack of RAM on your computer. How much do you have available? Since you're not running any other programs,
I don't think this is the problem, though.

Actually, this might be caused because your computer is too fast. Snes9x never worked correctly with newer computers, and likes to hang up on them. If you have dual boot/hyperthreading, you can try assigning Snes9x to only one of the two CPUs, but otherwise there is no solution to that problem.

If you're somewhat experienced with computers, you can also try underclocking your computer, though it's risky and I wouldn't try it.

Never hangs up on me. AND DO NOT UNDERCLOCK THE COMPUTER. I blew a $100 power supply sky high because my motherboard overclocks automatically (so if you build a computer, do not buy an ASUS motherboard)

I have a much more serious problem with Snes9x. Not only does my comp freeze up, Ctl - Alt - del does not get me out of this. The screen glitches up randomly with garbage, I have a screeching sound emitting from my speakers, and I lose control of the mouse, etc. This happens with any version of Snes9x I can find so I'm betting it's some kind of corrupted driver or dll somewhere... but what? Honestly, I've reinstalled directx, reinstalled my graphics card drivers. This makes no sense since no other program does this and it just started happening without any explanation. My computer was conked out for a week or two though. That first time it crashed something may have been corrupted...

If the problem persists and you have no idea how to fix it or what the problem is, best thing to do is find another emulator. First I'd try ZSNES seeing as it's pretty much the best out there. You could also try different versions of many of the emulators out there until you find one that suits your needs.

I found that using Snes9x for a while, that it steadily started slowing down on me. ZSNES worked great for me except a few freeze-ups the program had where ctrl-alt-del didn't help until about the 30th try. Basically, just experiment with other emulators for a while.

Ok find me another emulator with a decent debugger (replacement for GSD) and I'll take your advice. In the mean time I have to get to the bottom of this.

I was doing a ram test and it exhibited the same behavior... I just installed new RAM so I think this is possibly the culprit. Gonna swap out the old ram when I get home to see if that's the case.

HH: While possible the gfx card is more or less new Geforce 4400MX

edit:

I didn't realize this... but the ram I bought was DDR 400 mhz. though my mobo only supports up to 333 mhz. Odd how it could work for hours though and only an application or two would fuzz up with it. oh well. problem solved. Put in old 266 mhz ram and will have to go hunting for some 333 mhz expansion ram .

I used to agree with this...but considering which is getting more development in the RIGHT direction as of late...
