Uhh, coding anything 3D takes a lot of work, and editing a 3D game requires finding a LOT of information first. I should know. Especially when he's using that bizarre language which I imagine doesn't have a lot of 3D utilities.

I really think that it is a bad idea to program anything in Direct3D because Direct3D is Windows only. A better idea is to use OpenGL with a cross platform GUI toolkit.(My favorite is GTK) Also, I beleve that it good to read and write to the ROM being edited in such a way that it works correctly regardless of the endianess of the machine on which the editor is running. There is no good reason to not create tools that can be compiled for Windows, MacOS, Linux, or any member of a long list other OSs running on IA32, AMD64, IA64, PPC, MIPS, Alpha, or any other member of a long list of architectures with minimal or no changes. I started two programming two tools, one console, one GUI, on Windows and continued developing them on Linux on AMD64. Neither required significant changes.

As VL-Tone has said, the editor is written in Shockwave's scripting language. Shockwave has built in 3D functionality, but its ability to handle binary files isn't is good as C/C++.

I might as well attach an updated memory map.

I personally think that VL-Tone is either very busy, or just taking a break. Seriously, he has already done a lot for us. Or, maybe it was the increased stupidity of before that drove him away. This may seem strange, but I checked the MovieCodec forums just to see how stupid people really are, and VL-Tone popsted there saying something about him releasing the editor in a few days, before the 15th of September. Then someone flamed him saying he's an idiot, saying crap about him being an imposter, and calling him a sad-sack, and crap. They must've gotten to him. He has not posted since the 2nd page of this thread, long before Sep. 15. Is there any way to contact him, through E-Mail or something? I have some questions for him about the editor.

Anyways, I just have a question. We all know about the "Doesn't Edit Polygons 64" thing. So, I am assuming that means level and terrain wise, not referring to character polygons, considering the "Luigi is Really Real 2005" video, that means that maybe it would be possible to put in an almost working Yoshi model, just toy around with the body parts and animations. Or, increase Mario's body size a bit, to have our own pudgy Wario. Just curious is all.

I also remember VL-Tone mentioning something a while back about hoping to find the motion capture files. If he could decode them, would that mean we'd have the ability to make new Mario moves? It would be awesome to have a Martial Artist Mario. *Dreams Big*

Well, I just checked, and it's been since August that he's posted. No beta on the 29th. Either we (or someone else, maybe at MovieCodec) has scared him off, or he has something big planned for us. Does anyone have a way of contacting him? Through E-Mail?

I might do some Googling around later and see if I can help solve the mystery of the missing SM64 hacker...BUT...I do recall him saying at some point that he'd release the source code of the editor if he lost interest, which may be what happened. After all, we all lose interest in things, don't we?

Maybe. If so, hopefully rstewart or Cellar Dweller + could finish it. I really don't want to see this go to waste, all that time and hype....

Oh, no not that at all. I am just anxious, I mean how else will we get to toy with the game that revolutionized 3-D gaming? Besides learning it ourselves, I mean. But coming across this was nifty, and why spend months working on hex values and having to go back and forth and wasting time, when you can have an excellent program do that for you in a couple of days? It's like making your own game, provided you actually have a brain and don't hope to create a "SMB 1 level with hi-res graphics and a Bowser Chain Chomp," like most of the people who actually think it'll be an easy, point and click editor. Unless you're smart, of course.

Sorry for rambling, I am just excited to see that Super Mario 64 is not dead after ten years, and is looking toward a bright future. I just hope that VL-Tone comes back is all, he's always generously giving hints about hacking, and not going off saying crap about someone being an idiot for not knowing such and such. Hey, he even says that Sunshine is easier to hack then 64!

A bit off topic: I don't really know who was making it, but someone in the old thread showed screens of a M64 graphics hack, containing textures from Super Mario Sunshine. Who was doing that? I'd just like to know how the progress was going, because it looked pretty sweet.

Maybe he has internet connection issues. Maybe he vowed not to update anymore until it was released. Maybe he even lost all progress on his editor in a data corruption and went in to cardiac arrest due to shock and was hospitalized. Probably not.

I would like to see it though. I know I post every so often stating that's why I joined in the first place, but it doesn't bug me very much over the lack of updates.

Who knows... but the best choice now is to avoid keeping this topic alive. ;; It's not productive to discuss VL-Tone's "fate". As I said, we already have enough public info to hack SM64, plus to make an 3D editor. It's time to someone start a true and serious project.

True and serious? I'm not sure if your reffering to VL-tone being unable to finish his project or someone making something other than a mini hack?

Anyways, I have moved on with my life. A few days ago, WalMart got in a new shipment of Wii's - I was number 7 of 9 in line. Hehehe, once I get everything set up, mario64 will be my first VC console download ;-)

Oh, wait - School first, D'oh!

Least I get something good under the tree!

This should help move SM64 hacking forward.

I got Mupen 64 compiled and working under AMD64. I removed the dynarec and changed a bunch of size sensitive variables to use types from stdint.h, along with a bunch of other little changes. I intend to release it, earler if anyone is interested.(GTK/*nix only. The Windows UI is surely broken.)

As you can see, I've added a memory viewer. If you use the memory map that I posted you might see what some of the stuff in the memory window means.
