Welcome to the new SM64 Hacking thread!

The old thread, which reached over 70 pages, got closed due to high stupidity and spam. Because of that, this thread now serves the SM64 discussion needs, only with stricter rules to counter spam and stupidity.

Well, let's get to the general rules of this thread:

1. If you are going to post something, look at the previous posts (and, preferably, the old thread too) if the thing you're posting/looking for hasn't already been discussed. This saves your and our time in finding what you need.

2. Use proper grammar/spelling when posting something. Avoid walls of text (add some line breaks here and there), and try to make your post easy to understand.

3. If you're arguing with someone over something that is not related to SM64 hacking, it is a wise idea to use PMs to discuss this, since this is off-topic here.

4. If quoting, only quote the part of the post you're refering to (or answering, in the case of a question)

Now, what you may not do:

1. Do not ask for the release date of the editor. It will be released when it's done, and asking for it will not make it released faster.

2. Do not ask stupid questions (i. e. 'how do you guys do this?'). If you really have to ask a stupid question, use private messages and contact either me or someone else who is regularly posting here.

3. Do not post stuff that is off-topic. There's always a way to discuss this stuff without posting here, so keep this out.

(and, of course, anything stated in the FAQ, which you:re supposed to read before posting

Now, some of the more important hacking stuff found in the first thread:

Note: All these documents require a Big Endian (i. e. .z64, ABCD order) ROM. If your SM64 ROM is ordered differently, you can use one of the many free tools avaliable on the net to switch the order.

SM64 Hacking Doc: An extensive, but slightly outdated, SM64 hacking document, created by VL-Tone.
jensthecomposer's hacking tutorial: Tells you how to easily change physics and music of SM64 via a hex editor.
My (Prince Kassad's) music hacking tutorial: Mostly copied from the above tutorial, but with a new method that allows you to play some tracks missing in the original tutorial.

Note: everything following that requires a ROM extended with the ROM extender, which has been released by VL-Tone.

SM64 ROM extender: Extends your SM64 ROM for compatibility with newer apps/hacking docs and the future editor.
SM64 Text Wrangler: Allows you to change the text of SM64. (requires extended ROM)
SM64 Texture List: A list of all the textures in SM64, which can be modified with a tile editor such as Tile Molester. (requires extended ROM)

And now again a note for all of you:

Spam, stupidity, off-topic talk and anything else like that are not tolerated in this topic. If you have to ask a stupid question, PM me or anyone else posting here, otherwise stay out.

Well then, let the posting begin.

(If you have any questions/tips regarding this post (I'm sure I missed some things), PM me, and I will answer. Don't post here.)

I'm going to sticky this in the hope that it won't turn to shit. Seriously, posts will be deleted if they are the essence of stupidity. Do not make them, nor respond to them.

I'm actually glad the Original thread got locked.
And on a side note, I'm not so interested in SM64 hacking anymore.
I think I'll just wait for the editor and fool around with it a bit instead of devoting massive amounts of time to it.

Finally, I can see! No more stupidity or spam (at least not yet). I also have sort of lost some interest. I'll only sart making good hacks when/if we're able to edit terrain. Also, could someone copy some of VL-Tone's posts here, so that people don't have to search through 70+ pages of spam?

If we post VL-Tone's posts here, it will be good and bad. Good because people can actually read all his updates one by one and ask less stupid questions, and bad since it will take up a huge amount of space. If you guys want I will get all of the posts he posted but give me a day or so to do that. But first I need confirmation if I should do that or not.

A better idea is to use the AcmlmWiki, the way the wiki was made for. I've just created a page on Toad's Tool 64, you guys should add to that all you can.

Threads are for discussion, wikis are for raw information.

hey guys, this might be considered a spam but id like to thank you all for not flaming the newbs that came in and shut down the thread. I know we are all pissed but lets hope Prince kassads rules (thank god for you, your a beast) keep the newbs at bay.

Back on topic, we should post VL tones posts here (at least the important ones) and I like the wiki page, I'll add stuff if i can like the video link (with VL's Permission of course) once again thanks guys, we'll make this thread better somehow.

Super mario Nightmare 64!

Ok, when I was about 7 years old I had a nighmare.... In that nightmare I was mario, and I was in bobomb battlefield. There were chainchomps everywhere. Some of them even chased me around. I finally reached the star and escaped.

That's why this hack is called, what it is called. If you play this hack, be prepared for level crashing, oversized goombas, chainchomps, Chestchomps/Icechomps, and everybody calling you luigi.

Download - http://www.badongo.com/file/1200259

Apply patch to extended rom, and use an emulator with checksum fixing support (such as 1964).

Have fun, but beware!

P gad - is the rom your working with compressed or decompressed? and hex editor are you using? for some reason, my stuff won't work and I just want to make sure im doing stuff right or using the right rom/tools.

Decompressed (though I wish it were compressed), and I used xiv2 to make the hack. Note - The game only works on emulators that fix checksum errors before executing (eg mupen64,1964). I'll release an ips soon.

Also works on these -

Halfway on wet dry world (underground town has red coins, so it messes up), and halfway in tiny huge island (place with red coins messes up).

Works in snowman land 2(Forgot it's name), and in all water levels. Chain chomp might look different in those levels though.

I tried Jolly Roger Bay and Lethal Lava Land, and it came out pretty weird. In JRB he came out looking like a bunch of treasure chests with one opening and closing like chomp's mouth. In LLL his head was the pupil of an eyeball enemy and his chain was a bunch of spiders. The game locked up when I went too near him in both, but in LLL all the lava turned white! It was pretty weird, try it yourself. It also works on Bowser in the Sky, but you're gonna have to use a Gameshark or do that "warp through stairs" trick to get up there.
BTW good job doing this hack proffessor_gad! It's funny watching all the chain chomps running around!
