Everytime I see "OMG NEW HACK LOOK SCREENSHOTS", I just see more and more horribly designed levels. Well, not everytime, just most of the time. People seem to just not take their time anymore when making a hack, they just pop horrible level designs or "challenging levels" out of their heads and make a few a day. A good designer would almost stress over a good, fun level design that has progressive challenge throughout a game (depending on the style of your game). These designers usually take more than a day to do one level.
I'd suggest the majority of you who make SMW hacks put more time into designing your levels so they're fun. If you're going to make a challenging game, at least make it professionally and not just random shit that will perplex the player but bore the hell out of him/her as well. |

Well when I first starting out with SMW hacking I was making 3 levels a day sometimes. I basically wanted to go as fast as possible because I was so eager to release it, but that is a big mistake. There shouldn't be any rush to complete levels, hackers should spend as much time as possible working out all the details of the levels to make them as good as possible. As I moved along with hacking, most of the levels I made took me 3 days minimum, not just with SMW hacking but also YI hacking. I think with the ease of Lunar Magic hackers take advantage of the user-friendliness and mass produce levels without taking too much time to test out all the parts of a level.
So, in conclusion, take your time people, your levels will turn out much better . |

Dang right, Trinity. When I released my hack, it was 2 levels a day. It didn't turn out well. So now, I make a level a day.

I've been planning a hack for about 19 months now. I haven't been able to do anything due to my creative computer dying (a real sad loss for me). Yes, a GOOD level design requires a lot of thought. It's not just what you'll put into it, it's how cleverly organized it is. I am a very visual person and it has to look unique, original, neat, and clever to be good.

So, I've only been SMW hacking (in the LM sense of the word) for 4 months, and I've made a grand total of 4 completed levels
However, I've mainly been focusing on the OW, since I'm trying to have a very unique, non-linear overworld. About 1/5 of the Main map, 1 submap, and about 1/4 of another completed so far And no, it's not still called "Super Mario's Adventure", since I realized I was blatantly ripping off DahrkDaiz's hack name. So I thought about it, and came up with "National Mario's Vacation". And of course, if you've seen "National Lampoon's Vacation", you'll know the situation goes from bad to worse very quickly (Though the plots have very little in common). |

Well... me personally, it takes me about 1-2 weeks for a level in YI. I know it's extreme, but you gotta try to cram every bit of perfection into one level.
For SMW, it varies. Sometimes I can pull off a level a day, other times, it takes me quite a while per level. My best advice is, if you really want to take your time, don't make a straight piece of land to the goal, and think OMG WOW! Make many sprites, pits, pipes, puzzles. You have to make the levels the right difficulty, but still not eye-closed easy. |

I voted no more than one level per day because I have started running out of Ideas for levels so I have to take some time to think of more.

I have yet to design any actual levels. So far I've only been doing feature tests.

It's taken more than a day for me to make a level. I try to think of good level designs which can takes hours or even days.

I have the same problem as Tatrion, only I just critiqe my alredy made levels, until I'm either prompted to delete them, or they look nothing like the original

I don't really plan my level design. I know what I want to do (due to the storyline) but most of the levels just come up planless. But that doesn't mean I just make a level and declare it as finished. I need several days for my levels, because I work on them as long as my creativity lasts. My newest level for example makes no progress at all. I add 1-5 objects or sprites a day and don't know what to do next...
Slowly but surely... |

Waaay back when I was attempting an SMB3 hack making new levels from scratch... well, I hit some saving bug in M3I (this was before SMB3 Workshop was even started on) and my progress on the first level was lost. Took me about a week or so for that one level, and that's with an idea in mind. Later on, I tried again, took a day or two to come up with a level design and start making it (ideas first, creation later), and though I ran into a pretty bad bug (level wouldn't load in SMB3! ), I'd say I had done a good job on it... other than that minor detail.
So, if in SMB3, which has smaller levels and less enemies and stuff to work with, it takes me at least two days... I figure it should take most SMW hackers longer. Some people do good work fast - haven't seen any here, but if it's true for other things it should be here too - but most people need to slow down, realize that their hack should take a few months to finish if it is to come out good, and have a bit of patience. You can't hack a game very well in a day. |

I don't really put much thought it, i get 1, 2 or 3 levels done a day. Each level is an average length with a good design actually. In a way, i don't really rush because I feel it needs to get done asap, i only rush if i have a good idea for a level

One thing to note about how long it takes to make good levels, something I completely forgot about in my post, is how much free time one has. If someone's in the middle of summer break and has no job, they could finish a level in a day that'd normally take them two, three, four days even during the school year. Perhaps instead of 'days' we should go by 'hours', and only count the time we're actually working on and testing the level.
Originally posted by Andrew The problem I was having was that I had those Extend-to-ground blocks sitting over a bottomless pit; there was no ground to extend to. There's probably other possible issues. |

In my very early experience in hacking, I would do about a level or more a day. In all honesty, the levels weren't completely original. I simply used the default levels as my base and kind of "decorated" it.
As of now, though, it varies. I have different ideas for each level, so I might be able to get 1 level in 3 days or 2 levels in a day. As every hacker should do, I test my levels for bugs, and that can sometimes add up to my time. |

Yeah,I put time into mine, thats why I have shown only a few screens of my hack. Even though it is meant to restore as many things I can find on the beta of smw. Either way I put good time into it.

I usually just make hacks for my own personal enjoyment, but it still takes me a couple days per level, and even then I'll still have to go back every so often and make some changes. |
