Getting anything faster than dialup can be expensive. I don't think I'm inferior or an idiot for hesitating until a month ago to get broadband when the cheapest I could find was about $50/mo for 512Kbps(the fastest was $80/mo for 1.5Mbps) plus a $300 equipment fee. I would have waited longer, but there was a promotion that waived the $180 installation fee.

My previous provider was not AOL, but a local ISP. Last I heard, AOL was still a long distance call.

AOL will likely survive until high speed is available everywhere.

I personally use Trillian, I don't like the interface that AIM has, and I've had a few issues here and there with GAIM and Miranda.

We have AOL... It's because my dad is way too stubborn. (My mom doesn't know too much about computers, so she tries to stay uninvolved.) So faster ISP's are a few dollars more. So what if there needs to be professional installation. FREE PHONE LINES AND FAST SPEEDS, GODDAMMIT. GAAAAAH.

Why wouldn't you be able to get DSL?

Some places just plain don't have any high speed service available to them.

Isn't there a law saying everywhere must have high speed by the end of 2007 (at least in Canada)?

If DSL is not available on your phone service, most likely you don't live close enough to a DSLAM. And you really don't want to be at the maximum distance which I believe is around 18000 ft. Otherwise your service will be less than spectacular.

Interesting thing is...AOL is still the #1 internet provider in the U.S. even though affordable DSL/Cable has been around for several years now. I believe this move further will decimate AOL's customer ranks. It will only be a matter of time until a communications company like AT&T or Comcast dominate the Internet market.

I have AT&T and I spend $26/month on 3Mbps Down/512Kbps up...and I use gaim

Hint for AOL: Cable/DSL is soooooo yesterday, Fiber is SO tomorrow. Fast = Good. (Now, if someone at AOL reads that, I hope they understand, because when dialup goes out of business they'll want to dominate REAL broadband ;P).

Given AOL's current strategy, I'm not certain they know what broadband is.

Have they ever?

Not everyone can get good DSL however. They need to re-do the wires in my area of Montreal so my download rate isn't as good as the ones other areas of the city are getting.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't AOL have a DSL service offer for about $40 a month a while ago?

Shows how much they fail.

No, they just charged you $40 a month to use their email and browser service on your existing broadband connection.

QFT. I recently migrated from Trillian because it SUCKS.

Also, it's not the size of your bandwidth...it's how you use it

Everyone's mileage varies with Trillian. I love it but then again I only use it for AIM and I have everything customized to meet my needs.

There's more than enough AIM clients out there, and everyone should be able to find the one that suits them the most.
