AOL giving it all away

Anyone feel like taking bets on how well this will work? From a cost-cutting viewpoint, probably, but...

I bet they die after another year. Seriously, they suck, and if they give it away for free, nobody will want it. How can they compete with Netzero?

Netzero? Pshaw. They are around $9.99 a month right? My AT&T Yahoo DSL is $11.99 a month. I guess if you want to clog your phone line, NetZero is the way to go, but highspeed isn't that much more.

Also, AOL dying is pretty much impossible, thanks to all the stuff they own. (Not to mention people that are new to computers in general and think AOL is the way to go)

EL OH EL I GOT COMCAST CABLE.

6.2 Mbps DL, 852 Kbps UL

Anyone with dialup and such are inferior.

I had AOL once. It was my first ISP back in 1998.
With the speeds they provide, it SHOULD be free.

Quoted for frickin' truth.

You know your ISP is crappy when you have a 56k modem and all it'll get you is 35.5kbps, tops.

Sure, it's got some notable features, but what good are they if AOL is slower than molasses?

I now have 320k from my cable TV provider. (Hooray for customer discounts! )

Just curious... when would AOL have jumped the shark? I'm thinking sometime in the late 90's but there had to be a point where things just started to disintegrate at a startling rate.

Personally, I think right when faster modem speeds came out. As far as I'm concerned, AIM is the only good thing to come out of AOL. Everything else is a festering pile of crap not worthy of existing. Although this is hardly the end for them. Countless dirt poor college kids, people with holes in their pockets, penny pinchers and idiots will still stick with it.

Well, AIM is pretty clunky if you ask me. I use it, but on Trillian, so its less clunky.

Hey, all I know is it uses less system resources than AIM and is a lot cleaner looking. Other than that, on this crappy computer, I could care less.

AIM probably makes them money since the majority of users probably use the default client with ads and that. It's not going away anytime soon and if it did, it would probably be sold.

This just proves my theory that AOL is turning into adware. Seriously, that stupid HP Update thing that comes with HP laptops changed my homepage: when I opened lololol, it said "welcome to the new HP homepage yadda yadda powered by AOL!"
AOL truly fails.

AIM, clunky? Compared to most other messengers (such as MSN, or Zango) AIM is pretty stable.

IRC kicks AIM's butt.

But, anyway, if you must use AIM, I prefer to use GAIM, seeing as there are no ads or spyware.

It's what they get for offering a terrible service, and not updating with the times.

Whoever decided to stay clinging to Dial-up services was a complete idiot. They should have seen the migration to high-speed internet.
