No Zelda 2. I am outraged.

As a result of this, I vote Smash Bros. Melee. The only game on this list with Link's down-thrust.

In lieu of the original, I'll have to go with Zelda: LttP.

I was torn between Zelda:OoT, Melee and Civilisation IV... but since the latter's not an option I went with Melee for its replay value.

I fully expect Twilight Princess to become my new favourite though.

New Super Mario Bros. didn't make it? Nih...

I'll go with OoT then.

Voted Super Metroid all the way.

I am amazed at Melee having as many votes as it does, though I really should expect this from Acmlm's.

Gaah... Final Fantasy VI was great... Or Ocarina of Time...

On one hand, Final Fantasy VI had such a great story... I was really sucked into it, and cared about the characters so much that I tried to avoid the biggest event of the game by resetting and trying something different.

On the other hand, Ocarina of Time was revolutionary as a Zelda game, and I don't think I played any other game more times than Ocarina of Time.

I'll go with FF VI.

Don't bitch about what got in and what didn't. If a game were more popular, it would have recived more votes. You'd be surprised at what games didn't get in. Deus Ex, which I've never even heard of until now, almost made the final running.

It's more of a cult classic. Half-Life is to Final Fantasy as Deus Ex is to Phantasy Star or Star Ocean or something.

It's by Warren Spector, the Ultima Underworld / Thief / System Shock guy, if that means anything to you.

I just don't see why so many people liked Melee.

I mean, it's pretty fun, but as a favorite game? It's too random to be a true fighter, and the characters are extremely imbalanced.

Random? There is only like, 5 things that a really random, and most aren't accepted in tournaments.

If I recall correctly, the random things are:

Items
Luigi's Green Missile
Peach's Turnips
Level Changing in Pokemon Stadium
Turtle in Termina Bay

And while there are characters that are stronger than others (Fox Vs. Pichu) there are also counters for most characters, which makes people have to take up more than just one character. And the "Knock out of level" system brings in far more complex levels than "Take out their HP."

Not to mention the fact that you don't have to embed Random button combinations into your muscle memory, as compared to other fighters, a combo is actually stringing seperate attacks together.

I played in a tournament, with a GBA SP as the prize (back when it was new). Items were on. You had to pick one player at the start and stick with him the whole tournament.

The last 4 guys were all Roy.

I mean, for a fun fighter, I would definately play it. But if I wanted to play something to be competetive, it would be Street Fighter II or Guilty Gear X, or maybe Marvel vs Capcom.

EDIT: Come to think of it, why is the knockout system better than an HP-based system? It does change the dynamic of the game I think, but I don't see how it makes it that much better.

Super Metroid.

The sheer number of ways you can complete the game make it incredible. The Brinstar music is awesome as well. I could go on for hours....

Forgot the autoscroll in Icicle Mountain and G&W's Judgment (side-B) attack.

Melee is a good game, but SMB3 is just classic. It and the original SMB pretty much defined what a side-scrolling platformer should be.

The only really random thing is items, and items are off in serious tournaments... And sure, characters aren't balanced, but this is true in most fighters. There's still around nine or ten fighters capable of being played really effectively, so it's not so bad at all.

O SHID I forgot Streetfighter II. Ah well, it's not in the list anyway.

Isn't "it's really fun" kinda the exact criteria here?

Tetris.

Voting otherwise is a sin and a right-winged communist lie.
