I just thought that I'd mention that on Wikipedia, a recent movement seems to have come about, and all articles for individual romhacks are pending deletion, due to "Non-Notablity."

The ones that I found immediately are all from people on Acmlm's.

Mario Adventure, from DarhkDaiz is pending deletion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Adventure

Mushroom Nightmare, my own hack, is also in the same fight.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_Nightmare

And Pokemon Brown now just redirections to Red, where it recieves no mention.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pokemon_Brown&redirect=no

I think it's crap. While I agree that not every hack that is made (I'm looking at you, Super Bald Bros.) should have a page, they aren't sparing a single hack.

I posted my two cents in the Mario Adventure deletion page.

There's few hacks that deserve to have a spot; however, the truly notable ones that have made an impact on the scene should be cataloged, and Mario Adventure certainly received enough media attention to warrant it.

I wrote this on the Mario Adventure page:

Keep Since when aren't ROM hacks notable? For that matter, if ROM hacks aren't notable, why is any non-commerical product notable? Why isn't the Cave Story page pending deletion then? Just because it wasn't created via manipulation of a ROM? There are enough people active in ROM hacking to afford the consensus best hacks a page. This is one of them.

Since I don't have a Wikipedia account they'll probably just shrug off my opinion, but whatever. I don't see any reason to delete a page taking up a tiny amount of space on the server.

I'm guessing this all started from some elitist or purist nonsense.

Wikipedia is a free information tool. I think that if an article can be added that features information presented in a totally truthful manner than it should be put on the servers. Of course, there are a bunch of 30 year old pasty-skinned losers that sit in their basements all day going over the internet looking for SERIOUS BUSINESS to pick up on. Their closest living relative is the common "vulture".

I don't think that's a very fair comparison. Vultures have used their scavenging talents to keep their DNA alive for millions of years now. These guys will probably not.

I don't get it, it's supposed to contain just about all knowledge, but why do the romp around deleting articles because a small percentage of people are interested in the subject?

It makes no sense, but then again, I've seen a certain rather popular web comic be unable to have a Wikipedia article because it's "Unnotable."

Ugh, I want to really like Wikipedia, but..

"Delete per WP:NN. All ROM hacks should suffer the same fate > Thå Halo È 19:26, 25 July 2006 (UTC)"

Are people like this the ones who decide the fate of certain articles?

Yeah, I noticed that one myself.

Then again, we've also got:

"Delete. Unfortunatly, inferior awards from something minor are not notable. If it were an award from something major then it would be considered notable. Sonicandtails 04:33, 1 August 2006 (UTC)"

So, we've got some of our own against us. Great.

Yeah, I voted delete on Shadic's. And Pokemon Brown was never anything more than a redirect to Red. Don't get me wrong. Their thing on all ROM hacks being deleted is off, and I didn't vote to delete Mario Adventure. But heck, I've been reasonably active on this board and I had never even heard of Mushroom Nightmare before. Meh.

Only quoted are the ones with Mushroom Nightmare included. Being nominated for 3, and winning most of those? For somebody who mods the hacking section, maybe you should have been paying more attention to it for a longer period of time.

EDIT: And I'm just most of the links are dead now, I'm just keeping them there for full-quotedness sake.

I just don't care about those awards, though. I mean why bother? The stupidest things often win. I remember the last time one of them was held in the SMW hacking forum... Certainly worse than THAT, but still... Ghghghghgh.gh...

To me, having a page for any single hack would be like having a page for a single song from a CD. Just have a section on the ROM hacking page about a few of the standout hacks.

Funny, it took me all of 2 seconds to think of a song that has it's own page on Wikipedia.

Shadic: I'm not saying your hack isn't good, but... it hasn't received the same kind of attention that DD's has. :\ That's the key. If Wikipedia allowed every hack to be posted, they'd be opening a Pandora's box.

Yeah, I know that.

I'm just thinking that the restriction for them should be looser. Certainly DD's hacks should still be around, but I think anything that's a reasonably good hack should be able to stay. After all, it's supposed to a an Encyclopedia, not a "Whatever we think to popular enough to stay" knowledge box.

Hopefully you revoke that statement Colin after I reveal my logic.
Nothing crawled up my ass, I just know what belongs on Wikipedia and what doesn't.

People look for certain things on Wikipedia. I'm sure some people will look up Mario's Adventure, but who is going to look up that odd ball SMB hack that isn't big?

MA was posted on Joystiq, and I feel that is a big accomplishment for a Rom Hack. Therefore, it does require it's own Wiki page.

Shadic, with your logic, I might as well put up my original SMW unfinished 2003 hack (SMW:Marios Chance, which was the average suck noob hack) on Wiki, because I had "legendary" hacker Golden Yoshi praise it.

It just doesn't make sense. I can see if you got two World Record awards, but two nothing awards isn't going to cut it.

Shadic's Logic < Mine

Actually I thought you were talking about Mario Adventure with that statement. If you were then I wouldn't retract that statement. But you weren't so I do if that makes sense.

But don't start going around and saying your logic is better than someone else's.
