Ever heard of fragmentation? You seem to believe that all data on a HDD is stored sequentially: One file can be scattered all over the drive, so far as its clusters. Read up on the subject sometime, you may learn something.

I know about fragmentation. I'm saying that... nevermind. I suppose if earlier crud got deleted, parts of the ROM would possibly have been moved to an earlier part of the drive.

I assumed that the ROM had been placed on the drive after the 5GB of crud, and that the crud had not moved ==> no empty clusters in the beginning part of the HDD ==> ROM in the later part.

See, when I got this computer, I removed all the crud then I transferred stuff from my old hard drive to this new one, this, taking over the old crapware area of the hard drive.

:/ Well, if you couldn't find the ROM, that just sucks... BTW, which program did you use to try and recover the ROM? I just used the free demo of recoverer2000 and found my COTMK 1 RAM... latest version and intact with it.

I've used many recovering programs. PC Insepctor, Get Data Back, and WinHex, a hex editor that will scan the entire hard drive for a string of data. No dice.

Usually if something is lost and then found again, it is better than what it originally was.

Yeah, the main reason I haven't hacked SMW in so long is I saved over a really nice level I'd just made. Really, why would a hex editor write back unmodified bytes?

Because they're stupid. I learned that the semi-easy way; I overwrote a level I made in LM... while the level was strill in LM.

EDIT: I dunno if you feel like it, but if you do, try Recoverer2000. It worked for me when PC inspector didn't.

Was MA2 on my docs? If so, each window install or non destructive restore your early docs usualy gets sent to the owner's docs somewhere on pro. files, so the docs on the front is fresh.

Ok dude. You said you still have the ROM but it's 3 weeks of work lost. That can be stressful yes.. but giving up on the entire ROM is a bad idea. You've worked for a long time on this and to just throw it all away is wrong. People have been waiting for months and months for this hack, you can't just throw it all away. There are way too many SMW hacks, and so few SMB3 ones... yours is superior to all others.. continue. Please, if you don't do it for yourself, do it for those who have waited a VERY long time for this release..

Yes I've been following this for well over a year.

just think of what was lost... the functional Birdo, the fire storm, the thwomp suit, the open ended overworlds. It must be seen.

You misunderstand the concept of a hobby.

Until you are paying wages to DD (and he is accepting responsibility for said wages), he owes you absolutly nothing. The thing about hobbies is... you SHOULD only do them for yourself. If you don't enjoy your hobby, it's no longer a hobby... it becomes a chore... a job... a responsibility. An added stress source.

Having just had a blow like this -- a blow hard enough to make him frustrated enough to drop a project he loved -- having now the ADDED pressure from people like you (in the form of a guilt trip) to keep working just pours salt on the wound. I hope he doesn't give your post enough thought to even worry about it. Added worry is the last thing he needs.

So if DD doesn't want to work on it, he shouldn't. If it does turn out that it is permanently dropped -- tough shit, you'll live. Entertaining you for a few hours is not worth the months of added strain, frustration, anguish, and pressure that you're asking him to suffer though.

I won't lie, it is disappointing that he's dropping the hack, even if only for the moment. I was truly looking forward to it. However, I must ask this of all of you. Have any of you paid him a single cent? You mean you haven't? Then what gives you the right to ask him to continue, to guilt him into it, to demand that he forget about the stress and work on the hack solely for your own amusement? Not a goddamn thing. So quit being so fucking selfish and live with the "loss". His hobby, his decision, and if you think otherwise do us a favor and throw your computer into the ocean about five minutes ago.

(I've been a bit stressed, but the above is entirely deserved.)

3 weeks wouldn't be too much, thwomp, do that first, then the open ended overworld, the the birdo, do the easiest first, if it were 3 months, then that would be different. Now that you know how to do them, you could put it together alittle faster and it could be a little fun.

Oh I understand it's a hobby, but it's never good to start something and not finish it. Of course, losing 3 weeks of work is a huge blow and in the end it is his decision. I am just asking for you to reconsider because if you stop you are throwing a LOT MORE than 3 weeks of work into the gutter... a LOT more....

I have one suggestion, if you refuse to continue, at LEAST release a demo of all the work you have done right before those 3 weeks. I have your last demo and it truly is old and outdated.

One art project of mine a few years ago got erased TWICE just as I was almost finished with it both times. But as frustrating as it was, my final work turned out MUCH better than it did the first time through.

Of course it is your hobby DarhkDaiz, so do you what you feel you need to do. A final demo would be cool at least. Thanks.

Its such a shame that he could not get it off the drive... his brother needs to pay....

on a side note I remember this happened to me once as well... I was working on a total overhaul of Final Fantasy, called Mario: Rise of the Koopa Empire... and I had just finished redoing all the graphics and towns when suddenly... one day the hard drive on my laptop blew up... erasing everything... including the hack...

Dahrk Daiz: If you don't want to finish MA2 as of now, just ask someone else to continue it. I'm "sure" a shit load of noobs would swarm to ask you if they could be the one to continue it. Hold some kind of contest maybe, and let the winner continue the project. That, or maybe ask Bio if he wants to use some of your stuff.

I dunno, just some ideas of how to quickly salvage something so good as your hack, so you can get on to other things that you'd want to do.
