I got back my food allergy tests... Yes, apparently my drinking milk more often as of late is the source of the swelling of my throat you may or may not be aware of. I am very allergic to milk, and it's likely due to lactose intolerance. I am less allergic to other dairy products, which means I should probably avoid them, too... I'm also mildly allergic to wheat and eggs, a few random fruits and vegetables I never eat anyway, and the combination of fruits and cane sugar. I never really showed symptoms due to the fact that the allergies are quite mild, except for the milk thing, and under normal circumstances I rarely have pure milk anyway.

So yeah. This sucks.

That does suck. On an odd site note, that makes two of my more intelligent friends whom are also lactose intolerant.

BTW they said they could eat cheese, so that might be worth looking into.

That does suck. A lot. I can't imagine with no Ice Cream or other dairy products that I like.

I have a much, much lower reaction to cheese than any other dairy product, and I don't show symptoms on eating it, but it does cause an allergic reaction. The same is likely true of the other person.

That does suck. I, personally, am not lactose intolerant, but drinking milk can sometimes cause trivial problems for me. It's usually just a small swelling of the lips or an upset stomach, but the former isn't too bad (and is starting to get rarer), and the latter only happens in the morning and can happen with anything from cereal to toast anyhow.

Although it's uncommon, people do occasionally develop allergies that they've never had before. I had an instructor in middle school who became allergic to peanuts after some 30 years of loving them. He took it kinda hard when he couldn't eat a Reese's anymore.

Alastor what you could try is slowing building up a tolerance to milk. By taking little bits at a time you can cause your body to become tolerant. Don't try it with other alergies though. (Forget the reason my Bio tearcher told me this.)

It's not likely for an allergy to completely go away... Most of my allergies don't show physical symptoms, but they're there. Allergies work like they do because your body thinks they're foreign invaders and builds antibodies to them. Lactose intolerance is a bit different, but I don't think a production of the enzyme needed to metabolize is just going to start out of the blue. And if it turns out I'm not really intolerant, per se, and just have an allergy to it, then there's a chance it'll stop making antibodies after awhile, but it's not likely, and not in this timeframe. Symptoms may go down as the body fights it more often, but the other adverse effects will definitely be there.

I should probably take some tests myself ...

But my issue, is insane. Because it doesn't make that much sense at all. Usually in the morning, I've noticed if I have a bowl of cereal an hour or two later I'll get a stomach ache. This happens almost, everyday. I also sometimes get a bottle of chocolate milk for work, and after I drink it ... an hour or two later, I'm feeling aches in my stomach. Thing is, I can go out at night and have an oreo shake and have no problem at all. Does it make sense that some dairy products seem to affect me, at random times?

But you said it effected your throat? For me it seems to be the stomach.

I don't know, my mom said she thinks I could be lactose intolerant, but I don't think that would make sense if some things don't always effect me.

Maybe its just me and my bad stomach. I weigh a measly 135lb or something like that, but I took scans several years ago and I was told I have ulcers. Maybe I've just continued to have a bad, weak stomach of some sort that gets upset easily.

And for awhile I was on acid reflex medicine. No idea why though, because its rare for someone at such a young age (I took this stuff when I was in Junior High, I was like 14-16) to have acid reflex, and I haven't taken any of that crap for years and I've noticed hardly any change.

I should also probably note that every month or so, I have this random gas attack in my stomach or something. Its extremely weird, I'll feel like my stomach is really filled up and its very painful. It goes away after I burp till its 'fixed' I guess (I know thats disgusting, but just giving all the details I can).

Egh, I'm gross.

Actually, cane sugar is for the most part fine for me. As long as I don't go overboard on it, or pair it with fruit...

The cheese thing depends on the type of cheese. For example, American cheese is generally OK because it contains no actual cheese.

*finishes a nice tall glass of milk*

AHHHHHHHHHH. ^___^

My argument would be that if you have allergies, then don't drink the stuff. That goes for you, Xeo - you might like it but you can't like having to deal with the upset stomach all the time. Either find some medication that works or... and I'd feel for you if you had to do this, but... drink soy.

The tolerance idea doesn't work as far as I know. Regardless of how badly they're affected by an allergy, some people only need a teeny bit of something to get affected. So unless someone was willing to suffer, I can't see how that idea works.

Edit:Allthough after rereading the first post I am a little confused.. Is it a milk allergy, lactose intolerance or both?
---
Lactose intolerance is the condition in which lactase, an enzyme needed for proper metabolization of lactose (a constituent of milk and other dairy products), is not produced in adulthood.

So as you can see it is not an allergy.

There is no "treatment" or "cure" to lactose intolerance. There have been some cases where the intolerance has somehow diminished with time; this has not been studied scientifically, however, and whether it is a case of desensitization remains to be seen.

So slowing ingesting milk or lactose may work.

Other advice:
Such products include commercial sausages (notably frankfurters), medications which may contain lactose as a filler, most meal replacement and protein bars, cottage cheese, and even yogurts containing carageenan or gelatin.

Allthough now I have to have to have a talk with my Biology teacher. =/

That lactose-reduced milk that Lactaid makes is really good and it's realy milk that's had the lactose removed by enzymatic (sp?) processes instead of nasty soy milk. It's a good alternative to feeling like ass after drinking milk. Me? I'm only somewhat lactose intolerant so I drink milk and the consequences be damned!

It's the same effect as an allergy, though... your body reacts in a negative way when the lactose is consumed. The only way around that is through consuming similar products which don't have lactose or not consuming it at all. :\

Allergies suck.

Are there going to be any life altering changes in your diet, or are you just going to keep on trying to live in a world that has given you the worst hand of cards imaginable?

Honestly, I just picked the term I figured people would understand the most, and then threw in qualifiers. I'm fairly certain it's an allergy to milk, and not lactose intolerance. When I made the thread, I didn't know there was that big of a difference, which rather came back to bite me. Go ignorance.

Get Lactaid pills (You take on with your first consumption of milk products and it stops any bodily problems with lactose) and Lactaid Milk. Theres even Lactaid Ice Cream...

I know all this because my grandma is Lactose Intolernat, and my family thought I was for some time...
