| I believe it was intended for the N64DD (Disk Drive) system... that never took off, AFAIK.
So, like the EXT port on the SNES, it's not used. |

| The same ports also exists on NES... and Gamecube.
It seems to exist on most systems Nintendo made, and it's there for planned accesories but is rarely used in the west. Only the gamecube had it's EXT port used for the GBA player.  |

There were some NES accessories that used it, but obviously they weren't very popular. On later models the port is actually covered up. 
Also I think some Japanese Super Famicom add-ons used it. |
