Hey, you know when you're editing NES ROMs, and you select one of the 8 4-color palettes, and the entire left pane changes to that set of colors?

Yeah, that. Well, try pressing Ctrl-M sometime...

Hey, look. A new button. COL SET.

SWEET MERCY!

This secret button allows you to assign a different palette to each 8x8 tile in the ROM! Simply select a tile from the left pane, select the palette you want it to use, then click anywhere in the right pane. You can even scroll around in the ROM, and it'll keep track of the recolored tiles.

Unfortunately, this only works in NES mode (AFAIK), but you can always copy the graphics, paste them in a new window in NES mode, edit them, and paste them back into the first window in their original format. Also, it doesn't actually change the palettes in the ROM itself, but hopefully most of you already know that.

Man, is there anything you can't find awesome hidden features in?

Also it might be hidden because it's experimental. I've hidden experimental features in my programs before.

I wonder what possibly makes the hiding of useful functions attractive to program coders. If I were designing a program to be used to the fullest extent in making good hacks, I would certainly not hide good features. This is just bizarre.

It's like finding a hidden level in a game.

EDIT: my teacher says that's a simile.

This will help greatly. The game I'm currently working on has no order for it's graphics whatsoever. At least now I'll be able to sort out which tiles are used where.

I saw the title and thought "Does it delete your C:\ drive?" after reading the one about YYCHR and viruses.

Still, very interesting, and useful. Thanks for finding it.

May not have been properly finished and tested, so he probably hid it from prying eyes to avoid "BUIGGY POS" complaints.

The original Chelsea code (which unlocked a REALLY early overworld editor) was leaked by a tester (Jonwil?) way back when. Not sure about the rest, though.

More hidden (yet useless ) features: hold Ctrl-# (where # is a number, 1-5) and press the arrow keys to move the different panes around inside the window, or Shift-# to adjust various system colors.

(too bad Resource Hacker doesn't reveal any unused icons or text...or anything at all, for that matter)

Useful feature, but I'll probably never use it.
