Yeah, I will be getting braces within the next few weeks. I have this crazy feeling that getting braces at the end of high school is a bit late though, but I'm not too concerned about that...what I'm really concerned about are the braces themselves.

Braces have scared the hell out of me for my whole life. I never wanted them, and still don't. I heard so many bad stories about them...painful as hell, killer to brush, etc. And now I'm gonna be getting them. I don't know why I'm letting them get to me this bad, but they are, and it's really starting to bug me.

Does anyone here have braces? If so, how bad was it?

I was supposed to get braces. My teeth aren't horrific or anything, but they're pretty misaligned. But I said no; screw brushing way too much, screw no gum, and screw having perfect teeth so I can look nice for society.
If it bugs you that much (as much as it bugged me), refuse. They're your teeth, after all, and they can't constrain you and force them on you.

Just say no!

Braces weren't THAT bad. Sure, there was soreness after getting them tightened. I didn't go to all the trouble they preach about on brushing... just brush like normal in the morning and before bed... and before certain social functions. It's not a big deal.

My problem was breaking my hardware. I snapped the wire several times and I broke the braces off of my teeth ALL THE TIME. I chew on things. I played football. That sucked because my orthodontist would always give me a lecture, as if he wasn't getting fucking paid to work on me. Asshat...

I couldn't keep a retainer either. I broke several and lost one in the mall trashcan. I finally said fuck it and my teeth didn't really move much. They are still straight. My bottom teeth are a little fucked now but that's because my wisdom teeth came in and I didn't have room despite getting 4 molars cut out. I kept my bottom retainer in for several years and never did go back to the orthodontist. I finally just popped it off with a spoon and got my dentist to shave off the excess cement the next time I saw him.

I had braces for three years and a half years, and I was only supposed to have them for 2 and a half. The fact that I kept moving probably didn't help.

They're not fun. They do hurt. And when I'd go back for monthly tightenings, I couldn't eat anything remotely solid for 2-3 days. And I was worried for a while that I'd never get them off.

I didn't finish my treatment completely (i might've had 2-4 months to go), but finally, I went to a doctor down here, because I couldn't afford a NEW braces bill in another state, and he took them out and gave me a retainer for $500. Retainers are the best part, but wearing them 24/7 for the first year is a pain.

If your teeth are really bad, go for it,. but if it's just minor, stay away, they're crazy expensive, hurt, and stuff gets stuck in them ALL the time.0

Well, that's the thing. My parents are pretty much forcing me to get them, because my teeth aren't exactly perfect. Hell, I have overlapping teeth in the back of my mouth. So not only will I need braces, I will probably need to get a couple pulled, which is probably gonna hurt like hell.

Added to the fact that I'll have to get my wisdom teeth pulled soon.

I'm lucky enough to not need braces, I only have two teeth that aren't straight, and they only overlap a little bit. It's not noticable when I smile, only if you're really looking. I'm glad too, because I'm terrified of getting any work done on my mouth, like getting teeth pulled or even just getting them cleaned. Going to the dentist = death for me.

But most of my friends had them, and they didn't have too many problems. Sure, they hurt sometimes, but it's not like a kind of pain that will cripple you... you'll get used to it. And you'll have a great smile at the end of it.

You know, I've never understood braces, people look down on grown adults because they have plastic surgery to fix all their little "imperfections". Yet it's perfectly reasonable to force a child to go through all the pain and anxiety of braces because something about them isn't "perfect". My teeth grew in somewhat overlapping, but its not an imperfection anymore then the color of my hair or the size of my feet.

Well, in a lot of cases, braces aren't merely superficial, but used to fix the teeth before a problem arises.

Have fun with your wisdom teeth! I had mine taken out last August. Worst ordeal of my entire life.

One side of my mouth didn't numb enough and I could feel it and I begged them to stop and inject some more numbing stuff and I could hear crunching and they had to clamp my mouth open and oh my god. I ended up crying at the end, and I -NEVER- cry over physical pain. Nevermind that the medicine they gave me (vicodin and penicillin) made me throw up everywhere and I couldn't drive b/c I was so out of it.

I had to go to Otakon too and help out with a cosplay group (I volunteered months earlier before I knew I had to have them taken out) and so, half of the time I didn't even get to have the medicine and oh god, it hurt. And the swelling...!_!

Thank you for that lovely description. I have so much to look forward to now.

Well, my next appointment isn't for about a week, when we find out the cost, and how many teeth have to be pulled. Hopefully none, because that will hurt like hell.

SNN, I feel your pain. I really do.

I got wisdom tooth'd this week for the sole purpose of getting braces later this year, for two years. Then another surgery, to relocate my jaw.

The actual extraction wasn't so bad, but I did wake up at times and see the doctor at work. I was so high, I didn't even care. Minor swelling afterwards, not much, and I still can't eat solids.

I'm 14, so my parents can constrain and force braces on me. I'm not too good with the idea, particularly because of social concerns. Braces = fine, glasses = fine, braces with glasses = no no no.

I can't get laser surgery as of yet, I can't wear contacts because of allergies; my only hope to avoid looking like a total dork is permanent contact lens surgery.

Unfortunately, this means I'll actually have to work for college, because:

$900 wisdom teeth
$3600 braces
$19,000 jaw surgery

It hurts, doesn't it?

$900 for your wisdom teeth? Mine cost $2000. I think we paid $500 at copay though.

Man, 19,000 for jaw surgery. I'd kill to have the $3000 I need for my eye surgery.

Braces are more annoying than hurtful.

You get to the chair, wondering "Is this gonna hurt?" and you can't help but ask your dentist that same question.

When you finally get the operation started on your teeth it doesn't hurt. You have cement placed on your teeth, you start smelling an awful smell. Then when the braces stick on your teeth, all you can do is drink. Solid food is no option. Possibly for the next five days of the week.

The tightning hurts if your teeth are very weak or sensitive.

Then its $160 every month for the next two years.

When you get your teeth pulled / wisdom teeth pulled, if they prescribe you T3s or any sort of powerful painkiller (they should do this at least for your wisdom teeth, if not your other teeth), grab 4 bucks and go to the grocery store. Buy a bag of whole cloves (the spice). Cloves naturally contain euphedrin, which is widely used as a local anaesthetic. Chewing on one of those will numb half your mouth and- obviously- kill the pain. Then you can save the T3s for recreational use later. XD

I had braces at the end of middle school/beginning of high school. Really, it's only painful after they put 'em on and after they tighten them and stuff. In other words, they're not too bad once you get used to 'em.

@Cirvante: $19000 for jaw surgery? Ouch...the braces and stuff are fine, but that surgery is just expensive

@Riku: My teeth used to be sensitive, but only to the cold stuff, like ice cream, popsicles, etc. I hope that helps make the tightening a little less painful.

@KT: Well, I still have about a 5% chance that something will happen and my wisdom teeth can stay by some miraculous miracle or something... I might do that - it's not that I can't handle pain, I just don't enjoy it, no one does.

@Luigi-San: Yeah, a lot of my friend who had braces said that, along with a lot of people on here. It looks like I habe the be more worried about the tightening then about the braces themselves.

I think I'm more nervous of getting my wisdom teeth pulled then getting braces now

Braces are not really worth worrying about.

At... all...

Ive had them... twice. Both times they went on, both times they came off, no fuss. I didnt have to change much (Avoid gum and sticky stuff, but I never ate that stuff anyways). Off before I knew.

Heres a basic run down of all the scenarios you could go through.

1. They go on, you get none of that extra stuff to worry about, and they come off.
2. You have to do rubber bands for a while. These arent too bad.
3. You get headgear. This is only for like, jaw alignment.
4. You get chains... these hurt... a little bit.
5. You get powerchains... these hurt more than chains.
6. You get some other strange form of pulling.

Yeah... I only got... 1, 2, 4, and 5. It wasnt that bad.

Anyways, you get the week with the spacers, which hurt for a day, you get the week of the braces... they hurt for about 3-4 days... and then every time they tighten it, you get between 12 hours and 2 days of pain... thats pretty much all.

In other news, Im getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow... thank goodness for knockout drugs...

I doubt it'll be anything close to mine; I started early.

I had braces when I was eight and went all the way until I was eighteen. Had six total teeth taken out in the process (four wisdom, two upper premolars). Personally, though, it really wasn't that much of a pain in the ass. What really sucked was when they tightened the damn braces every three months or so. Then it was a pain to eat for a few days, but otherwise it was tolerable.

Can't really say I'm opposed to the way my teeth look now, though. The big thing is that I had a gigantic overbite before this all started. I think it was made in part because I fell off a bed when I was a kid...on a trike...yea, I'm bright.

Oy. Everyone I know says I need braces...except for my dentist . And the wierd thing is she seems to hate me and likes to see me in pain....

Anyway, pulling teeth Hurts. Like. Hell. She spent half an hour numbing me and another using something that looked like a wrench to yank as hard as she can to get them out (I got 4 pulled). Any way, the last one, the one that has the deepest roots, the freaking dentist decides it'd be a good time to use the bathroom for, acording to the clock, a good TEN MINUTES. When she got back I told her the novican wore off, and she said that she didn't want to waste anymore on me. So, with the tooth fully in, and me feeling every last bit of pain, she yanked and yanked until it was out, then, opens the door and says, "Now that wasn't so bad now, was it?"

WHAT. THE. HELL. DID. SHE. THINK?
