| I need some help with this.
My dad is moving in 10 days, and taking his computer (the one I'm currently using) with him. However, I've been using this computer for a long time, whenever I'm at his house, browsing Acmlm's and such. My problem now is, I'm trying to clean it up, make sure there's not a single trace of anything on it, and I'm having difficulty. For starters, board.acmlm.org as well as a few other sites I frequent are in the dropdown of my address bar -- and deleting cookies/temp internet files doesn't remove them. How do I remove those? And make sure they don't come back? And aside from that, something I obviously need to remove, is there something I might miss? My dad isn't a comp junkie by any means, but I don't want him to find something when he sets his comp back up. He'd shoot me if he knew I post on message boards, he thinks they're like death. 
I've gone through and removed documents, photos, etc from folders, but I REALLY need this comp clean. PLEASE HELP ME THANK YOU |

Deleting browsing history SHOULD do it, but last time I needed to do that (now, I'm assuming you're using IE) with IE, it's been 03q8452388328 years ago (yeah, I do know that there's a letter in my number) |

| Yes, it's IE. Deleting the browsing history delets everything but a few... I don't know why they won't go away. Acmlm's is one of the ones that won't go away. | |||

Anyway reformatting is the only way to ensure it's 100% clean, but for those address bar entries, try searching for them in the registry. |

| Reformatting for me involves kiling every file on the hard drive, among other things
But yeah, try searching for those addresses in the registry. I've never had that problem, because I keep my days to rememebr stuff at 0. Also, those lines that don't disappear- have you gone to them today? they'll be around if they've been accesssed since the last wipe of the history. |

| When you go to install Windows, it'd ask you what partition/disk to install on. There you should be able to reformat the partition. What that means, though, is to delete everything and create a brand new filesystem with nothing on it.
If you can't do that, then you should delete every file in Temporary Internet Files. I think IE has a button to open this directory in the options dialog. Your best bet would be to copy the path, write it down or save it in a text file, reboot in Safe Mode, and delete it there (using a console, if you know how, would be even better); this helps ensure it doesn't leave behind files because IE still wants them. |

| But I HAVE deleted every temp internet file. I just did this, before re-opening Acmlm's, and took a screenshot. After just deleting them, certain links are still there. The image is attached.
Also, I can't reformat if it means wiping the comp. That's not an option. Going into the registry is a possibility, but I'd have no idea what I was doing or where to look. |

| Right click on taskbar, select properties. It should bring up Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. Go to Start Menu Tab, click on customize, then click the clear button under "To remove records of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web Sites, click Clear" | |||

| OKay... Load up IE (close all other windows first), then clear the history (make sure your home page isn't acmlm's), and then close IE.
Reopen IE, and see what appears in your address bar when you pull it down. |

Well, unless all those sites you went to to push it off started with b... Try reinstalling IE via: control panel>add/remove programs>add/remove windows components>internet explorer. Then go find the newest IE and install that. Other than that... do the registry thing, and make good use of the search option (start>run>regedit to edit registry, in case you didn't know), searching for and deleting every occurance of acmlm. (I'd definitely create a system restore point before attempting that). |

| The easiest would be just starting a new account and deleting the one you are using now. Starting a new account starts a new favorites folder, history and all that. Like in your screenshot when you placed "b" and then the board name came up; creating a new account will not show that again ... Just make sure that if you do create a new account that you delete everything (everything) from your current one. There will be no trace of history, cookies, ect. A fresh account starts things from the beginning.
Edit: Keep in mind also, that installed programs will show on the new account unless you uninstall them. (edited by Chris on 07-21-06 08:55 PM) |

| I'm not to familiar with IE, but if there's a Reset IE or Reset to Factory Settings option on IE, choose that. It should wipe everything in IE, including all favorites, history, and anything else that has been done in/with IE. If there isn't an option like that, then what you can do is set the history to forget things immediately, come to the board, and then leave. That may not work though. Another thing you could do is to not use IE for the next few days and hope that it forgets all that stuff. Those are my suggestions that you should try before you go and do anything extreme. Hopefully I helped. | |||
