Is anyone else here going to Otakon? If so, what are you mainly interested in?

I went to my first Otakon in 2001 because my ogre is a major anime fan, and we were near Baltimore, and it seemed like a good idea. Getting to the con was utter hell due to the baseball traffic, and we only got to hang around there for a few hours, but it was a wonderland I wanted to revisit. We caught a Lupin III movie and bought a bunch of rare video game soundtracks in the dealers' room, and the whole idea of cosplay just grabbed me. As a dorky middle school kid, I was a fan of Anna of Phantasy Star II and Rydia of FFIV, but their costumes seemed way too elaborate for Halloween. As a still dorky grownup with disposable income and fond memories of doing well at sewing stuff in eighth grade home ec class, I was thrilled to see that costuming was such a thriving aspect of fandom.

I don't want to speak much of my first costumes, but I will say that they taught me quite a lot. I've finally hit a point where I'm genuinely proud of my work. Most recently, I've been redoing the armor and weapons of my Zhang He costume out of closed cell foam. I just love patterning this stuff and putting it together.

Mostly finished shoulder pauldron (since the photo was taken, I tweaked the paint job somewhat, but you get the idea)

Unpainted peacock talon (gauntlet weapon thingy)

I still want to dress up as Anna, but that will wait for another year. I will NOT be recreating her mullet, though.

The only Otakon I've gone to is the RockMan Otakon. I went to the last one last year, cosplayed as Django the Solar Boy. My friend Zero cosplayed the X series' Zero (he didn't need a wig since his hair is long... blond, shiny, and huggable XD), Kevin cosplayed Axl. My wife cosplayed Ciel, but Amelia and Alia didn't cosplay any RockMan characters.

I remember seeing one of my friends on REO fourms who went there as Zero wearing a wedding dress... sheesh... --;

Wow. Nice pauldron. Really nice.
Is that gauntlet made of foam? How pliable will it be when painted?

I'm starting to get into making my own costume stuff. I've never cosplayed (never had an opportunity to go to con) but I have dressed up a bit for Ren Faires and the odd SCA event. I'm working on a Belmont (Castlevania) character at the moment in the event I get to go to a con in the near future. I have a bitchin steel cross that is cut from as10 tool steel (my brother used to make all the knives for a moulding company.) I have my chainmaille made and I'll use that as part of the costume. I was thinking on getting some more sheet aluminum and cutting out a pattern for pauldrons/spaulders and hammering them round. I don't think that should be too hard. Of course it wouldn't be colorful like yours, but it would be fairly durable for costume use and would be good practice for doing it in steel later.

That will have to wait as my next project will be boiled leather armor for my legs. I really need to learn how to use a sewing machine so I can finish my tunic. I've had the linen measured and cut for a month

My biggest problem is that I get overwhelmed because I get worked up and start too many projects at once. I'm the same way with my custom Transformers. I'm not sure how to break myself of that habit...

There's a con in Adelaide this weekend. I've never been to one before, and I didn't know about it in time to dress up or draw a whole heap of fan-art to sell or anything. I'm disappointed I didn't know earlier, and I'm not sure if I'm going to go or not.

We don't have a lot of anime stuff here in Adelaide (read: almost none) and certainly not the amount of cons that I hear about overseas...

Kasdarack - Thanks! That's my first compound curved pattern ever, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Both of those items are made from foam. I paint it with a few coats of artist-grade acrylics, so it remains flexible. I just painted a strip of foam gold to see how the subtle texture of the foam would look with the paint (it's sort of glittery, which is OK by me) and make a base for testing various colors with the gold, and I bent it in half without any trouble. The raised strips on the gauntlet and the swirly on the pauldron are thin craft foam, which I had to coat with gesso so the paint wouldn't rub off, and the gesso does harden the surface of those decorations to some extent. It's good gesso, though, so they can still bend.

I am impressed that you work with metal and boiled leather. I tried making real banded metal leg armor for the Xiahou Dun costume I've been working on for my husband, but it was a royal pain in the ass, and the overall effect wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. I've since learned that metallic stretch vinyl cemented over foam (and other materials) can look awesome, and it is of course much lighter...so after all that time and money, I'm redoing his armor. Bleh. That costume will be ready sometime next year, I swear. At least I have most of a 10 ounce dyed black buffalo hide sitting in my basement in case I ever need it.

Do you have any pictures of your work? I'd love to see it. The Castlevania series is teh win...and real hammered metal armor looks awesome.

There's a pic of me in my maille in the phot album thread. It looks nothing like that now because I didn't like the 60 degree seams for the shoulders so I completely redid them. I currently have the sides unwoven because I'm making a few alterations. I'll post a good pic when I'm finished. I haven't boiled any of my leather yet because I haven't scrounged up anything the right size to stretch it over to dry. The patches I have are rather rough because I don't know how much they will shrink or if they'll shrink evenly. My plan was to just trim them to size and shape afterward. I've never done this before so we'll see. I'll post some pics even if they come out fugly.

The cross is cool looking, but will not polish. It's just too damned hard. I think I could get away with it at con because it's not even remotely edged... but I'm not positive that it wouldn't get taken away anyway. It's rather large and non-concealable.

I need to remember to ask Amelia to mail me those photos of us at our Otakon last year.

The pauldron looks really cool. Really good artist and maker.

I'll be there as well. Most likely hanging out at the Chugworth and VGcats tables harassing my buds, so you know where to find me if you care. =p

And yeah, I'm back after a year and a half or so. Scary, no?

I was supposed to go a few years ago with a friend, but that fell through. HOWEVAR, there is a certain person on my friends list on LJ (Rydain, I mean besides you, so feel free to poke around) who's going and is cosplaying. I'm all about making the connections.

There's a slim chance of me going. Although at this point i doubt it . Couple of close friends of mine are going (one of which is cosplaying as Garma Zabi, so be on the look out for any slightly purple-haired crazy people in shitic uniforms playing IIDX or something).

I went to anime boston couple of months ago and had a blast. I still have some of the pics up on my space, if anyone wants to see them . None of me, though I'll probably be going to it next year, possibly cosplaying (either Zengar, Arad or one of the POOL'S CLOSED guys).

I believe this is the URL to the pics anyways

Montreal just had Otakuthon last month, which was our first notable anime convention. I couldn't go because I had other things to do (*cough*WORLD CUP*cough*) that weekend, but it looks like it was a huge success; I believe 2,500+ were in attendance over the weekend which is well above what the organizers hoped for, so the odds of there being a 2007 edition are good.

All I know is that cosplay was out in force judging by the pictures. I'd probably stick out like a sore thumb if I had gone.

Well, it turns out that I can't go to AVcon today anyways, because I feel much more influenza than usual.

Nuts. I was thinking about putting in an appearance or something, but I guess it's not happening.

You're that popular around those parts? Wow!

Sorry you're ill. There's always next time... and you can prepare months in advance.

Apparently I am as everybody kept asking me if I was going Even when it was clear that I was pale, swaying and looking distinctly like I might be violently ill...

Oh well, I guess there's always next year. I got plenty of time to plan something to wear, and draw a bunch of fan-art and such.

So next year we'll be hearing the story about how Taryn went to a great party and came back $1000 richer, right?

I keep meaning to go to Otakon, yet fate keeps making me flat broke around this time of year.

Alas.

You may see my friend Leerie, though, she's going with a bunch of friends for their third year in a row. Don't rightly recall if they're going to be doing any cosplaying though.

=O You're actually going to miss this year's Otakon Valcion? Last year's 4chan meeting was crazy enough, this year should be even crazier. Already a ton of other /b/tards going as one of the fro posse, it should be classic.

Hey, that's better than me. I've been meaning to go to AVCon last year and this year, but I always forget and find out a couple of days after that I've missed it. ;

I've done it two years in a row now. Oh well, always AVCon2007. ;
