(Gavin) get this: my new hard drive finally comes and I install it and get everything working
(Gavin) then I decide to take the time to update Ubuntu
(Gavin) so I set up the new partitions and everything and I go to shave real quick while the system is installing. I come back and see that it's done with that and I have to set up the time and such
(Gavin) I go to move the mouse, but no dice... apparently the system froze
(Gavin) no big deal, linux has frozen my computer before
(Gavin) restart
(Gavin) NOTHING HAPPENS
(Gavin) the BIOS doesn't even fucking load up
(Gavin) no data is sent to the screen..
(Gavin) the fans are going and the power is on and shit, but nothing else

No beeping, no screen display.. I unplugged the hard drives in case that would do anything (I'm a computer hardware retard) but of course it didn't. Hopefully the HDD's are okay. I don't know why they would also be fucked, but with my luck, I wouldn't be suprised.

I feel like crying. This machine has served me greatly over the past ~three years... I honestly don't have that big of an attachment to the machine itself (although I made fun drawings on the case), it's just the though of having to spend the money that I sure as fuck don't have to replace it. Not to mentione the fact that I'm currently right in the middle of two website developement projects that I would have been working on at this exact moment in time if God didn't hate me.

Although I spend a great deal of time on computers and with programming, I have always been extremely ignorant of computer hardware in general, so naturally this is nothing that I know how to deal with or assess.

So what I would like to know is if anyone has any immediate thoughts as to the cause of the problem (which I would guess may not be easy assess without actually being at the system), and any suggestions as to where to go from here... I really need a computer pretty much immediatly, which sounds like it probably isn't possible for this particular machine. How much does it cost to get the computer analyzed by a professional? How fucked am I? Will they ever find WMD's or Jimmy Hoffa??

i remember with my dell a few years back, i upgraded processors and I messed up the computer (exhibits same problems as you did--turns on but "nothing" happens) I gave it a week w/o power and it was fine after that. So, you could play the waiting game and see what happens in a week.

If that is not an option, you can try to reset the CMOS settings. There is usually a jumper you have to enable for 5 seconds to do the job. You need to consult your motherboard manual to see where it is. If you have a good motherboard, one of the jumpers should be labeled descriptive enough to tell you what it does.

Other things you can try is to remove your memory and see if your computer responds to that. If the proc isn't dead, the computer will respond. My processor died about 1 year ago and I removed all components off the motherboard and it didn't complain about NOT having memory. So, that is a test you can do to see if your processor is dead.

Wow, isn't this a small world? I have the same problems. You HAVE a boot disk correct?

1.) Try booting it up and formatting. Provided that you backed everything up, you won't lose your computer for good.

2.)Take your HDD out and try it on another system. If it doesn't work, you'll have to buy a HDD, like me.

That might be a good idea, except:

*) I tried resetting the CMOS but no dice

*) I don't think I can play the waiting game, and I have a bad feeling it might not do much anyway

*) @removing RAM: If the motherboard is fried but the processor is okay, would I get the same results as a dead processor and a working motherboard?

I appreciate the troubleshooing tips, although unfortunatly my status remains unchanged

On the mobo, I think it would at least beep to tell you 'hey, no processor'.

Sounds like you fried something in the mobo. :\ Those aren't cheap.

sounds like the motherboard has a dead wire somewhere based on those things. So, you probably have to go out and get a new motherboard/CPU combo.

Something happened to my computer when I downloaded my updates like instead of the computer being protected by the viruses, it made my computer become more vunerable to viruses. I got a virus right after that.

And what, pray tell, does this have to do with Gavin's problem?

Gavin: One of my computers did the same thing when its power supply went bad: everything spun up, lights came on, etc., but nothing else. The monitor never came out of sleep mode. Since it's arguably the cheapest (and most failure-prone) component to replace, I would borrow one from somebody (or just buy a cheap one that you can easily return) and try that first. If that fails, you might try looking for small computer shops in your area. They might be able to diagnose the problem for a relatively small fee, and they usually have plenty of components on hand to test with.

You're better off going to a Best Buy. Small shops dick you over in oh so many ways with 'restocking fees' if you end up returning the shit. What bullshit.

Honestly, go to Best Buy, buy a replacement Power Supply to see if that's an issue (which it probably is). I was experiencing problems like yours up until a month ago. Then I got a new case with a working speaker and could begin diagnosing things. That it isn't beeping at all is a very bad sign. My guess is either a bad mobo or a bad PSU at this point. Hopefully it won't be the proc.
