I don't get it. How freakin' hard is it to *gasp* use correct case and  use punctuation? Good God, there should be a program that dictates a simple sentence and write it normally, as in, not "hi how r u i m doin gr8 rofl rofl rofl c u l8r".

Lucky for us, people that can't type in full words are generally members that will be banned at some point in the near future.  They just... get a little too attached to the short way of speaking and don't realize they sound like morons in doing so. |

| Mostly people who have never used a message board before. Message board ettiquette is different than IM ettiquette.
Mainly, an IM is much more like a normal conversation, so it is much more important to say what you want to say without keeping the other person waiting. Checking your spelling/grammar is generally a waste of time in IM. If you've ever IMed me, you know that I don't "sound" the same in IM as I do on this board. Of course, some people do not understand this due to one of a few reasons, and carry their AIM speak into the message board. These aren't necessairly stupid people. Though some of them certainly are... Some just don't know how to talk on a message board yet. On the flip side of the coin, I have seen plenty of people with perfect spelling/grammar and absolutely nothing worthwhile or interesting to say. |

I've never been a fan of lazy typing. I guess because I've never really used instant messaging things and this was my first message board. 
Recently, I discovered my computer has a messenger thingy, so I sometimes use it to talk with Magikoopa Myster. You should have seen it. A gigantic half-hour long conversation in perfect English (aside from the occasional intentional "lol" and not so occasional smileys). |

| actually, craig, you seem to take more of an issue with phonetic and internet-specific abbreviations than case and punctuation.
but anyway, the issue you're dealing with is de facto spelling reform! in the news!!! in wikipedia! the tendency for people to want things to be simpler has fueled stupid abbreviations. cell phones with their text messaging and whatnot make it even more tempting to take shortcuts. it will never catch on in full, but it is happening, albeit at a slow pace. language as you know it is changing before your eyes and you are desperately hanging on to the past! |

| I try to write properly on IM, but sometimes I hit one of those days (days or weeks, maybe years) where I seem to make 100 typos in a row.
But I always use the entire word for "you're" and "you" and "the" I still don't know why people like to use "da" instead of "the" |

Eh, if people learned to type correctly, there would be no need for shorthand AIM language. Youll see me type the same way in AIM, on a message board, through emails... 
Not to say that there are the few things that I always leave out, such as apostrophies, and the occasional typo... |

| Anyone dumb enough not to write in their own language correctly shouldn't use computers unless they intend on learning how to type. The sight of paralanguage and abbhreviations with excessive use of symbols drives me mad. This is why I don't use instant messengers. I enjoy polite, intelligent conversations and I'd rather not bother with those torture devices, especially AOL. | |||

I use proper English everywhere, and it ticks me off when people tell me to use garbage speak. Contrary to some beliefs, it is possible to convert people to normal English--people who hang out with me seem to be 'infected' by a respect for proper typing. |

| I don't mind the occasional abbreviation, but I would tend not to use them when replying to a messageboard thread.
They're for IM's, and sometimes SMS's, but that's about it. And even then, I seldom use too much abbreviation. I do find it harder to read generally.... it doesn't "flow" like full words do.  |

| I think it's more of a habit, I used to use shortcuts in typing alot, I still do if, i'm typing one handed and need to be typing as fast as possible. It's just a habit you pick up, kind of like hitting shift and the beginning of a sentence you just pick it up and learn to use it in your typing skills. Hell, why not learn to be able to read it as long as you don't use it, it can't make you stupider. | |||

| Speaking of things making you stupider.. I'm positive the internet is making my grasp of grammar and spelling slip away.
I'm picking up weird Americanisms, like "color" instead of "colour", I keep screwing up basic things like there, their and they're....  Or too and to...  STUFF I FRICKEN LEARNED IN PRIMARY SCHOOL!!! ARGH!!
