I hate to go kinda off-topic, but everyone talks about Famicom/Super Famicom/Advance/etc. War games; why? What do you do in them?

Most of us probably thinkt hat you should learn to make yourself clear your post sounded like you wondered what you do in them. Not what we think about them.

Here are some NES hacks I have had ideas for.

Slalom - The graphics could be changed into Mario Kart and would have a similar feel to MK.

SASA - with the way these controls are, this game could be converted into a fun Mario Sunshine style Water Pack game.

Snake Rattle and Roll - Could be made into a Yoshi Game.

Shadow of the Ninja - this game is such a rip off of Castlevania that only graphic changes would be needed. Most of the enemies would behave just like Castlevania (hubchback, whitedragon, fishman, etc.) if you just changed their graphics. Plus there is a weapon that behaves just like the whip.

weird, I guess games that start with 'S' inspire me. but that is all for now

Hey, someone do a graphics hack to do that.......but it's not a very popular game so I guess nobody cares to do that.

I might make it so you must unlock pipes using the green coins, or I might make it so that you can only access some power-ups based on the number of green coins you have.

You could always make them part of getting 100%. Defined as completing both Mario and Luigi's games, beating all levels on both sides, getting all green coins, and so on. You'd get one big reward for finding everything; perhaps playing as Mario on Luigi's levels and vice versa; and various other little rewards. Here is an example reward chart for the green coins, although you don't have to necessarily use these ideas. At any rate though, the final reward should be worth it and add depth to the game.

10 Green Coins: Unlockable Powerup
20 Green Coins: Minimum Requirement to access final level and beat the game
35 Green Coins: Unlockable Area
55 Green Coins: "Glue Shoes" (no slipping on ice)
70 Green Coins: More Time in Level (timer counts down slower)
85 Green Coins: Unlimited Lives (as in Mario Adventure)
100 Green Coins: Power stomp, an always-active attack that is like the yellow shell/yellow Yoshi attack from SMW.

A year ago, I wrote down tons of ideas for hacks. I can't think of any off the top of my head, except for this little trick in Super Mario World.

Using a key as a stepping stone allows you to get into pipes 1 tile above the floor.

I once had this crazy idea where I would change DK3 into a "classic" style DK game more like earlier ones in the series, but still with the shooter and everything- if I recall, I realized how daunting this task would be about five minutes after thinking of the idea, and that it'd probably be easier to hack one of the earlier DKs rather than do this to DK3... and then I just gave up out of boredom.

I had a SMW hack idea where custom blocks would be used as doors and coins as keys, but put it on hold when I realized that it would take a sprite to do what I wanted for the doors and at that time there was very little sprite hacking.

I once had a CV2 idea where the hack would take place entirely in Castlevania, making it more like modern Castlevania games.

DahrkDaiz,

Some ideas for the green coins:

You have to collect a certain amount to be able to play special levels.

Or, perhaps you could do something with the Versus mode. The name of your hack is "Luigi vs. Mario", so maybe getting the Green Coins could unlock the Versus Mode, or allow you to do special things in the Versus mode.

Or, the more green coins you collect, the more hints you will receive throughout the game.

Or, the more green coins you collect, allows you to hold more items in your item box. So, start the game only being allowed to hold a certain amount of items. The more green coins you get, the more items you can hold in your item box.

Design a special title screen, so once you beat the game and get all the green coins, the title screen will be different (like in Mario Kart 64).

Now, I don't know if I can inspire you, but a long time ago, I had a brilliant idea for a new SMB3 hack, but I didn't know how to do it. But, since I don't really ROM hack that much anymore, and you would definately have an easier time with it, allow me to share this idea.

This is what I wanted to do:

Every play Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? Well, I thought of a "Camoflauge" idea.

You know the platforms in the backgrounds of levels? Blue, White (which if you hold down, you can fall through it), and the other colors?

Well, the idea I thought of, is that you could change the color of Mario's suit. If you stand behind a platform that matches Mario's color, the enemies will turn the other way. However, if you are not the same color, the enemy will approach like normally.

Pretty cool huh? I always wanted to do that hack, but I didn't have the experience. That would be awesome if you could do a seperate SMB3 hack just for this. Doesn't even have to be big if you don't want it to be.

I was thinking you could either change Mario's colors by pressing select, or by other means, such as walking through the door, a P-switch, or even powerup.

Stealth Mario!

Mario Gear Solid!

I hope I was able to get my ideas across clearly. Like the new graphics for MA2. Later.

An advanced version of Chess is how I like to think of it. And damn fun multiplayer with the right players.

If you haven't tried one yet, you need to. Just not the GameBoy Wars ones: they suck in general

I had an idea for a premise of a SMB 3 hack. It would be called "Quest for the Fourth Whistle." Everyone knows there were 3 whistles in SMB3 and a lot of people said there was an elusive 4th one, but no one ever found it. (Because there isnt one.) So i figured someone could use the same maps as the original. The levels that had the original 3 whistles would still lead to a secret room, but you would get something like the hammer brothers suit instead, and Toad would say "You already have this whistle, but have this instead!" The levels would be replayable of course, and you would have to go through all 7 worlds to find the 4th whistle. You can only get to the 8th World with the 4th Whistle. The 8th world map would be the only one different than the original.

Well...I have an Idea for a Wario and Waluigi hack of SMW. But the problem is that when I patched the have separate graphics for Mario and Luigi and then ripped the gfx, Luigi's Didn't show up. Also, I have NO CLUE how to make Wario fatter and Waluigi taller with the space I am allowed.

Has anyone else played an NES game called Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Houma ga Toki in Japanese)? It's terrible, molasses-slow, repetitive, painful to play, often voted the worst game ever on the NES... and yet there's just something about it. The graphics are actually pretty good for what they're trying to convey, the Victorian atmosphere's unlike any other NES game, and the whole idea of shifting between light and dark worlds is interesting.

I actually got into rom-hacking because of that game: I just want to, well, fix it! Add in RPG elements like talking to townspeople and exploring the countryside, create houses that you can actually enter, speed up the hero's walking and jumping speed, fix some of the glitchy enemy spawns that make the game unplayable, and just rebuild the game. Same core ideas, same graphics, same structure, just a completely different execution..

I may actually do that after this Final Fantasy hack (in other words, maybe by the end of the year!): it seems like the best way is to probably just take another, more competent platformer engine, like Castlevania 2, and try to rebuild Jekyll and Hyde from scratch. The dark/light world gameplay structure might make such a conversion impossible, but I can always dream...

Here's an idea for SmB3...

When you climb up a vine, you hear the sound of climbing from SmB2.

Has anyone messed with the e-card reader yet? I'm sure there would be a way to make your own SMB3 levels (for the GBA version) and with a good printer you could play them on the actual hardware via the e-card reader. It would be a lot to figure out, but it could also be easier than you may think!?

Before New Super Mario Bros for NDS came out and they had all the trailers going with the new super big smash everything mario powerup, I fired up BlockTool and edited the SMB3 style breakable bricks and made them breakable from all sides. I'd like to see that power up implemented in SMW, but I don't think you can enlarge Mario's sprites that big, plus I don't know how to edit the existing powerups to change the attributes of pipes, etc.

I think it would be possible to make an enormous Mario sprite in SMW. Considering how Banzai Bills are enormous sprites and work, I'd think something like a Mario would be supported.
