I was thinking of getting them to help me make an external disk drive that would let windows read the GC disk. |

dismanteling a console and putting it inside a pc case and connecting a proprietary disk drive to your computer, making it actually work with your OS are two entirely different things.
the gc drive shares very little with normal pc drives. different transfer protocol, different discs, different interface, different file system. i'm not saying its impossible, cause i have a pc here that has a built in famicom disk system drive (just fitted the drive in a slot and connected it to the parallel port, using the fdsloader tool) for copying and rewriting fds disks, but thats like comparing apples and oranges cause the fds drive is just a variant of the well documented, ancient quick-disk format, whereas the gc drive is a proprietary one mainly designed to prevent people from copying or reading out the discs. |

Don't ask me about it, I already know it is possible because i've seen it done. I just need to contact these guys and see what they can do. I have a strange feeling they are gona' say they are too busy but in that case I do have a back up person to ask. I'll get back to you guys as soon as I find out if they can help. Untill then, I going to get the necessary tools to rip the ISO's mainly PSO and the router.

Either your friends just showed the PC version of Halo or they just put a PS2 and an Xbox in a PC case.
The Gamecube drive is NOTHING like a normal PC DVD drive. Getting it to work with a PC would require a TON of research and reverse engineering. You also need a device that converts the signals coming from the PC to something what the drive understands and vice versa. You'd also have to write drivers for the drive. In other words, just forget about it and just buy all the equipment. Also, PSO is just one way to run homebrew. There are plenty of others. |

It was the XBOX halo disk I saw it and trust me these guys are smart they can do anything. But maybe your right about the pc case thing. I never got to see it run windows. The guys who have the Xbox and PS2 computer are gone on some trip in Europe so I can't get to them. But the back up guy agreed to help me. the only problem is he can only look at it once a week. so it will be a long time until we can ge some results.

i dont think this discussion will go anywhere soon.
the bottom line is: the pso stuff was hot when there werent any modchips around. if you want to rip gc discs nowadays, get a bba and a qoob mod-chip, start it up, connect the cube to your network and save the game to your pc, plain and simple. trying to connect a gc-drive directly to your pc will involve a massive amount of reverse-engineering work (if you or your pals can do it at all which i somehow doubt, to be perfectly honest) and will have little to no advantage over the network method. no need to reinvent the wheel here. Well... the guy came... he saw what I wanted... we talked... He showed me how long it would take, how much it would cost, and how impossible it was... I fainted... We played SSBM... He went home leaving me a little pissed... but thats what you get for having crazy dreams... I wonder what I was thinking when I said I would look into make a GCN disk drive. All the reasons why it was impossible were painfully obvious. Well at least I can see how the other guys (the ones now vacationing somewhere in Europe) made theirs when they get back... *SIGH* |
