VII was a good game. It was actually a breakthru in the genre. It had a pretty good storyline.

And it MADE the Sony Playstation. Almost everyone I know who bought a ps1 did so specifically to play FFVII. So most people would probably disagree with you and say it started going downhill when they botched FFVIII with that ridiculous plot twist near the end where they all knew eachother and forgot they knew eachother.

I think FFVII is a great game, cool setting, music, gameplay, etc. But it has by far the dumbest characters in all of the FF's if you ask me. (emptiest, goofiest, etc)

My friends and I always joke around about the game, because its just ... fun to make fun of. Our conversations always end when someone asks:

"Cloud, Who is he?"

You misread him Alastor. He said 7 had a good storyline, and 8 was botched.

Dont get me wrong, I liked 7, but it wasnt a breakthrough in the genre. They completely abandoned the things people loved about every other FF game. They tried to reinvent the series, and unfortunately, they did.

I love 6, but it's where they started to go wrong by mostly eliminating character classes. Everyone could melee well and everyone was a caster. And there were useless characters. Lameness

Yeah. I just hope they're don't have some of those "bugs" like the FFIV port. Random lag (especially in battles), and the screen scrolling really bugged my eyes at times. I don't remember it being like that on the PSX or SNES.

Also, Final Fantasy III (DS) looks pretty imressive.

First time I saw it say Versus XIII I thought it was going to be the cast of XIII fighting against Organization XIII from Kingdom Hearts.

geckoyamori is kickass

"If you haven't noticed, every single Final Fantasy character past VII (IX exempt thank goodness) looks exactly the same, even malexfemale characters."
so is celice! i remember seeing ffxii screens of that chick, then comparing it to an image of yuna. in the end my mind was saying "GET A NEW ARTIST".

"I love 6, but it's where they started to go wrong by mostly eliminating character classes. Everyone could melee well and everyone was a caster. And there were useless characters. Lameness"
in the jap version, they use class names to refer to each other. of course, none of these even mattered; their only distinctions in battle seemed to be in their special skills(which were great!). additionally, they could have done much better with the esper system, but didn't do too well at all.

for me, i don't really like seven's plot much. i like to blame it for spawning so many emoffs. i would have liked its plot better if it was a revenge story, without you getting to tunnel into cloud's soul.

The idea that they're going downhill really banks on the presumption that they were that far up to begin with.

I highly suggest everyone read this article, by Toastyfrog, which outlines just why VII, the holy grail of FF to many fanboys, is just plain overrated. He states it much better than I could.

One of the things that I thought the game did have going was the cool nature/reincarnation theme running through it, and how the game leads you to believe that everyone goes back into the lifestream at the end of the game to be reborn. Unfortunately, they shit all over this idea with Advent Children.

Most of the games are pretty boring. The characters are usually one-dimensional. In the older games they are just wandering around and fighting evil, maybe while dealing with some obscure personal issues. The dilagoue is poorly worded and the story has trouble conveying even a tiny degree of empathy to the player.

As for the more recent ones (7-10), they try to make the characters look two-dimensional by giving each of them some strange problem that they hide at first but reveal over the course of the game. Then over the course of the game they find themselves somehow magically changed into a better person, even though the process in which it happens is either non-existant, like the hero grew more mature as he leveled up, or totally ridiculous and impossible to relate to.

Also, a big part of the recent trend is probably that Square is owned by Enix now. Do not be fooled by the misleading "Square-Enix" company name or the fact that they called it a "merger." Square was finanically weak after losing many millions on Advent Children (I've heard it may have been over $100 million in losses) and Enix gave them an offer they literally could not refuse. "Merger" just makes it sound nice. The Square that produced FF 1-9 is dead.

Ah, don't even remind me about Advent Children.

If the plot and characters in FFVII weren't bad enough, it just totally melted them into shit. No doupt it had incredible animation, but that's it. You could probably put the movie on mute and enjoy it more than trying to follow the storyline.

wite: Is that entirely accurate? I know Enix gained the higher power, but I'm pretty sure both Enix and Square still have the majority of their own freedom over their seperate developed titles.

Anyways, simply put I think the majority of us can say the Final Fantasy games are simple. Not all of them are fantastic, but they're good games. But there are easily dozens of other RPG series out there that I'd say are far superior.

- Mana games. Even though I don't think any of them have been nearly as good since SoM an SD3, I still enjoy this series a lot.
- I'm sure the majority of us would love to see another Chrono game.
- Most of the Suikoden games put not just Final Fantasy, but most RPG's to shame when it comes to charcter development.
- Breath of Fire IV is Legendary.
- Vagrant Story was incredible and totally innovative and original.
- etcness.

But that's all entirely my opinion.

Anyways, have you guys actually seen the Final Fantasy XIII trailer? It may as well be titled The Matrix Fantasy. Honestly, looked like a Xenosaga spin-off with a blend of Final Fantasy VIII in it or something. Eh, I don't know. Ever since FFX I've really lost interest in the newer FF's. I have hopes for FFXII, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see on that one.

I may have taken it a little too far, but certainly Enix is going to be pushing Square to make money, which may explain all the FFVII: Advent Children and FFVII: Cloud Eats Breakfast CG movies coming up. Enix definately has the upper hand and the final say in Square materials.

Of course, depending on who they put on the project, they could come out with something that resmebles an old, good FF. Which, to me, means "It's like either FFVI or FF Tactics."

You all are making me want to play Tactics again. I hate you.

We need a real Final Fantasy Tactics II like we need a Megaman Legends III. I'm happy that XII is taking place in Ivalice, but I really don't think I like the system that much. I played the demo of it that was packed into Dragon Warrior VIII, and it just didn't seem appealing.

I hated X and VIII, though I'm considering giving both of them another chance. As a fan of the old school, I thought IX was a refreshing return to roots, save for the fact that regardless, the characters were still kind of transparent and you just couldn't care about them that much...

VII, only good things about it were Cid, Red XIII, and the Turks. Everyone else is kinda lame. Story's good, it makes an excellent political point that we're destroying the world and such, and even features what the writers probably wished would happen, with the earth finally fighting back against humanity, etc etc etc.

VI, I actually never played about 90% of it. Sorry.

IV was the best. Its characters really were quite deep and you really could get to care about them (if it was your first time through). It had secrets and sidequests and all that fun stuff, a good plot (back when the elemental crystals weren't an overused pile of crap), and it was just plain fun. I'm glad it got rereleased... But now I gotta play the hardtype version. ._.

More Chrono would be lovely, too, but I think we've seen enough of Secret of Mana.

@wite and Grey: Yeah, another Final Fantasy Tactics would be great. I will guess we can all agree Advance just did not make the cut?

Also, Grey ... you should really play VI. Really.

And I do like IV quite a bit myself. A basic and typical storyline and characters, and sometimes cheesy, but for its time it was pretty good.

For IV, I couldn't get past the awkward dialogue. The plot is sorta soap-opera-ish, too.

It's hard to take anyone seriously when they are calling you a "Spoony bard." Maybe it's just me.

But you need to play VI. In my opinion, it's by far the best of the main FF series.

Don't you mean the Final Fantasy movie? I mean, Square didn't die or anything directly as a result of that but they bled an insane amount of money with little return.
